  • 1987 - IBM ships first copies of OS/2 Standard Edition 1.0.
  • 1992 - Apple executive staff approves proceeding with porting the Mac OS to operate natively on Intel processors.
  • 1995 - IBM licenses Java from Sun Microsystems for use in hardware and software.
  • 1996 - At the Handheld PDA Expo in San Mateo, California, Microsoft announces that the Windows CE operating system will support Motorola MPC 821 and 823 PowerPC processors, and ARM processors from Digital Equipment and Cirrus Logic.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1942 - The Goofy film How to Fish is released to theaters.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the film Mars and Beyond.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the seventh "Tales of Texas John Slaughter" episode, The Robber Stallion.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring first "Daniel Boone" episode, The Warrior's Path.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Moon-Spinners, part three.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled A Disney Christmas Gift.
  • 1983 - In Canada, the Disney TV show airs the film Strange Companions.
  • 1992 - Hollywood Pictures releases the live-action feature film The Distinguished Gentleman to theatres.
  • 1995 - Sierra Leone issues ten postage stamps depicting antique Disney toys.
  • 1998 - At a Christie's Teddy Bear auction in London, England, a 1931 Mickey Mouse doll sells for 4,370 pounds (about US$7,250).
  • 2001 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases four volumes of "Walt Disney Treasures", each title on two DVDs: Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Davy Crockett, Silly Symphonies, and Disneyland USA.
  • 2001 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases the film Pearl Harbor on videocassette, and DVD for US$26.98, in the US.
  • 2003 - At the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City, California, the Motion Picture Association presents the Pioneer of the Year award to Michael Eisner.
  • 2007 - Disney releases the film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on DVD in the USA.
  • 2011 - The Disney Channel premieres the Austin & Ally TV series.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1964 - The Governor's Cup race of the Nassau Speed Week is held in the Bahamas.
    • Jack Saunders races John Mecom's Corvette Grand Sport coupe #003 in the Governor's Cup at Nassau, but does not finish the race (10th place).
    • George Wintersteen races the #12 Corvette Grand Sport #005, but does not finish.

  • 1992 - David Hill begins work as new Chief Engineer of Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - German Army Group Centre commences an attack in Russia, with the objective being the capture of Moscow.
  • 1941 - US cryptographer Ralph Briggs decrypts a Japanese coded signal indicating the Japanese Navy is heading out to attack.
  • 1944 - In Greece, the National People's Liberation Army of the National Liberation Front begins armed fighting against British troops and Greek government forces.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes an air raid on Oberhausen, Germany. One bomber is shot down; large damage is inflicted.
  • 1944 - In Italy, Canadian forces capture Ravenna.
  • 2000 - Turks and Caicos Islands issues 18 postage stamps to mark the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Video game history:

  • 1995 - At the Personal Computer Outlook conference in California, Apple Computer shows the Pippin multimedia device. Bandai has a license to make and sell the systems, initially in Japan.
  • 1995 - Nintendo releases the Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest video game for the Super NES game system in the USA.
  • 1996 - Shares of GT Interactive Software drop 37.6 percent in Nasdaq trading, after the company reported that its games for the Nintendo 64 would be delayed.
  • 2003 - In Japan, Sony releases the Gran Turismo 4: Prologue Version video game for the PlayStation 2. The game includes about fifty cars and five race courses. Price is 2980 yen (about US$25).
  • 2003 - Nintendo releases the 1080: Avalanche video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2011 - Nintendo releases the Mario Kart 7 video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the US.
  • 2012 - Ubisoft releases the Far Cry 3 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Swedish history:

  • 1676 - The Battle of Lund is fought. Swedish forces defeat the Danes, driving them out. 5000 Danes and 3000 Swedes are killed.
  • 1865 - The riksdag begins taking votes of the Estates on the proposal of switching the riksdag from a four Estate system to a two-chamber parliament.
  • 1865 - (9 AM) The farmers Estate of the riksdag votes unanimously in favor of government reform.
  • 1865 - (9 AM to 3 PM) The nobility Estate of the riksdag meets in the Hall of Nobility, discussing the parliamentary reform.
  • 1865 - (10 AM) The burghers Estate of the riksdag votes 60 to 5 in favor, after some opposition speeches.
  • 1865 - The clergy Estate of the riksdag meets, and decides to delay decision until after the nobility has voted.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2000 - In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, the Royal Canadian Mint lanuches the Community 25c coin, designed by Michelle Thibodeau.

USA coin history:

  • 1837 - Charlotte Mint receives its first deposit of gold, from Irwin & Wilms.
  • 1860 - Gold $20 coin dies by engraver Anthony Paquet are sent to the San Francisco Mint.
  • 2007 - Michael A. Newdow, attorney and founder of the First Amendmist Church of True Science, initiates lawsuits challenging government-sanctioned references to God, and the statute that requires "In God We Trust" to appear on all American coins and paper currency.

Sports history:

  • 1909 - First Canadian Football League Grey Cup: University of Toronto defeats Toronto Parkdale, 26-6.
  • 1920 - First Pro football playoff game Buffalo-7, Canton-3 at Polo Grounds stadium.
  • 1920 - 8th Canadian Football League Grey Cup: University of Toronto defeats Toronto Argonauts, 16-3.
  • 1926 - 14th Canadian Football League Grey Cup: Ottawa Senators defeat University of Toronto, 10-7.
  • 1927 - Pittsburgh Pirates' Paul Waner wins National League Most Valuable Player.
  • 1943 - US Major League Baseball Commissioner Landis announces any baseball club may sign Negroes.
  • 1945 - 11th Heisman Trophy Award: Doc Blanchard, Army (FB); he is first junior to win the trophy.
  • 1949 - Bob Gage ties NFL record of a 97-yard touchdown run.
  • 1956 - 22nd Heisman Trophy Award: Paul Hornung, Notre Dame (quarterback).
  • 1961 - Floyd Patterson knocks out Tom McNeeley in four rounds for heavyweight boxing title.
  • 1961 - Smallest New York Knicks crowd at 49th Steet Madison Square Garden - 1,300 (due to snowstorm).
  • 1964 - American Major League Baseball approves a free-agent draft.
  • 1964 - Commissioner's office given full powers in baseball disputes.
  • 1964 - Test Cricket debut of Ian Chappell, versus Pakistan Melbourne Cricket Ground, 11, 0-49, 0-31.
  • 1965 - Second New York Knicks game postponed (due to death of opponent Philadelphia 76ers' owner).
  • 1965 - San Francisco Giants' Masanori Murakami, 4-1 this year, does not renew his contract signing instead with the Nankai Hawks of Osaka, Japan for US$40,000.
  • 1966 - Sandra Haynie wins LPGA Pensacola Ladies Golf Invitational.
  • 1973 - John Cappelletti wins Heisman trophy.
  • 1977 - Hollis Stacy/Jerry Pate win Pepsi-Cola Mixed Team Golf Championship.
  • 1977 - NFL's 5,000th game, Cincinnati Bengals beat Kansas City Chiefs 27-7.
  • 1979 - Cleveland Cavaliers retire jersey number 7, Bingo Smith.
  • 1980 - New York Islanders end 15-game undefeated streak (13-0-2) (to Colorado Rockies).
  • 1982 - 48th Heisman Trophy Award: Herschel Walker, Georgia (Running Back).
  • 1983 - New Jersey Devils' make their first NHL hockey shut-out, beating Detroit Red Wings 6-0.
  • 1987 - Karlstad skates world record 10 km (13:48.51).
  • 1988 - Amy Benz/John Huston win LPGA J C Penney Golf Classic.
  • 1988 - Baltimore Orioles trade veteran first baseman Eddie Murray to Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • 1993 - Dan Jansen skates world record 500 metre (35.92 seconds).
  • 1993 - Johann Koss skates world record 5000m (6:35.53).
  • 1994 - 83rd Davis Cup: Sweden beats Russia in Moscow (4-1).
  • 1994 - Marta Figueras-Dottie and Brad Bryant win LPGA J C Penney Golf Classic.
  • 1995 - Atherton (185) bats for 643 minutes to save Johannesburg Test.
  • 1996 - The Orlando Magic team ties the NBA record of fewest points scored since inception of 24 second clockm losing to Cleveland Cavalier, 84-57.
  • 1997 - NBA suspends Latrell Sprewell for one year for attacking his coach.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Pittsburgh Penguins beats Vancouver Canucks by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Buffalo Sabres by score 6-2.
  • 2021 - At Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, NHL regular season game: Minnesota Wild beats Toronto Maple Leafs by score 4-3.
