Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - Stsve Jobs and Bill Gates sign an agreement rescinding their original Macintosh applications contract, allowing Microsoft to market its own competing products.
  • 1993 - Richard Page, co-founder and hardware chief of NeXT Computer, leaves the company.
  • 1997 - Texas Instruments announces it will withdraw from the Intel-compatible processor business.
  • 2002 - Sony Electronics introduces the Sony Clié PEG-T615C handheld computer, replacing the PEG-N610C. It features 65,536-color 320x320 pixel backlit TFT display, 16 MB RAM, Memory Stick expansion slot, USB connection, Palm OS 4.1, universal remote control. The lithium ion polymer battery powers the system for about 12 days. Price is about US$400; weight is 6 ounces; size is 4.8 x 2.8 x 0.6 inches.
  • 2002 - Sony announces the Clie PEG-S360 handheld computer, replacing the PEG-S320. It features Palm OS, 16 MB RAM, Memory Stick port. Price is US$199.
  • 2003 - MandrakeSoft of France files for bankruptcy protection.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - M.J. Winkler Productions releases the Alice Comedy film Alice the Toreador to theaters.
  • 1926 - M.J. Winkler Productions releases the Alice Comedy film Alice's Balloon Race to theaters.
  • 1943 - The special cartoon film Education For Death is released to theaters.
  • 1943 - Disney delivers the film The Winged Scourge to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. It stars the seven dwarfs from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Spare the Rod to theaters. Huey, Dewey, and Louie also appear.
  • 1956 - The Tomorrowland Boats attraction in Disneyland closes.
  • 1958 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Donald's Weekend.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the fifth "The Swamp Fox" episode, Redcoat Strategy.
  • 1961 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the eighth "The Swamp Fox" episode, Horses for Greene.
  • 1967 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Willie and the Yank: The Mosby Raiders, part two.
  • 1970 - The Legacy of Walt Disney display opens on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.
  • 1975 - The Space Mountain attraction opens in the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.
  • 1986 - The Living Seas attraction opens in Future World in EPCOT Center, at Walt Disney World. It includes a 5.7 million gallon aquarium, Seabase Alpha area, films An Animated Atlas of the World, The Seas, Sea Watch, and Suited for the Sea, and Coral Reef Restaurant.
  • 1988 - Disney generally releases the live-action feature film Good Morning, Vietnam to theaters. The film cost US$14 million to make.
  • 1989 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, featuring Wild Jack, part one.
  • 1990 - Michael Eisner announces plans to expand the Walt Disney World theme parks, and to add a fourth park during the 1990s. EPCOT Center is to add a pavilion from the Soviet Union, and 16 new attractions are planned for the Disney-MGM Studios.
  • 1990 - NBC TV begins airing the series Blue Bayou.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures / Paramount Pictures live-action feature film Alive in the US.
  • 1997 - The show Walt Disney's World on Ice - The Spirit of Pocahontas opens in New York, running until February 2.
  • 1999 - Disney's All-Star Movies Resort opens in Walt Disney World.
  • 2002 - Disney re-releases the film Tron, on DVD and videocassette in the US.
  • 2004 - Disney board member George Mitchell encourages Comcast to make a letter bid for Disney.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - The second Corvette prototype (#856) is completed, ready for mechanical testing.
  • 2003 - In Scottsdale, Arizona, the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction is held, over five days. 53 of 59 Corvettes are sold, for US$3.1 million. Some highlights (prices include buyer's fee):
    • 1954 black (only four built), red interior: US$79,920;
    • 1955 Gypsy Red, six-cylinder engine (only 10-14 built), white top and interior: US$73,440;
    • 1958 fuel-injected: US$114,480;
    • 1967 Marlboro Maroon convertible, 427-ci 435-hp, 25020 miles: US$116,640;
    • 1967 Rally Red coupe, 427-ci 435-hp, red interior, side exhausts, bold-on wheels: US$124,200;
    • 1967 green convertible, 427-ci 435-hp, 4-speed: US$129,000.
    • 1968 blue convertible, blue interior, L-88 engine, 13,590 miles: US$135,000;

  • 2005 - In Detroit, Michigan, the North American International Auto Show is held, over nine days. Chevrolet unveils the 2006 Corvette Z06, with 7-litre LS7 engine, 500 hp, 475 pound-feet torque.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - The British Air Ministry issues a directive to Bomber Command regarding the importance of German oil targets.
  • 1943 - British forces in North Africa commence an attack on Erwin Rommel's forces.
  • 1943 - The American army agrees to co-fund an anthrax-producing site at Grosse Ile, Quebec, Canada.
  • 1943 - (evening) 157 British Bombers attack German submarine bases at Lorient.
  • 1944 - Dwight Eisenhower begins his command of Operation Overlord.
  • 1944 - Erwin Rommel takes command of the German 15th and 17th armies.
  • 1946 - In Melbourne, Australia, a court sentences Japanese Captain Kato to death by shooting for the execution of an Australian prisoner in Netherlands New Guinea.
  • 1946 - In Canton, China, Huang Meili is executed by firing squad. Meili was convicted of collecting Chinese financial information for the Japanese during the occupation.
  • 1946 - In Naples, Italy, a US military commission sentences three German Gestapo officers to be hanged for the murder of seven Allied soldiers. The three are SS Major August Schiffer, SS Under-Officer Albert Storz, and SS Lieutenant Heinrich Andergassen. A forth guilty person, gendarme Hans Butz, is sentenced to life imprisonment.
  • 1965 - Poland issues a postage stamp marking the 20th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps.

Video game history:

  • 1968 - Ralph Baer applies for a patent on his invention of the television video game system.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Mario Tennis video game for the Game Boy Color in the US.
  • 2003 - Tecmo releases the Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball video game for the Xbox in the US. Price is US$49.99.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - King Gustav Adolf guarantees the neutrality of the Elector of Bavaria and the Catholic League.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1997 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils first strikings of the 1997 silver $1 coin, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Team Canada's victory over the USSR in hockey in 1972. Mintage will be limited to 300,000 coins, available in five different packaging formats from $19.95 to $79.95.

  • 1841 - Birth of Lord Frederick Stanley presenter of hockey's Stanley Cup.
  • 1892 - Basketball rules published in Triangle Magazine, Massachusetts.
  • 1895 - Albert Trott takes 8-43 on Test debut, then a record.
  • 1900 - SCNEC soccer team forms.
  • 1905 - Coen de Koning becomes world champion all-round skater.
  • 1908 - C Hill and R J Hartigan make 8th wicket partnership 243 for Australia.
  • 1925 - Birth of Keith Bentley international racing cyclist.
  • 1932 - Birth of Dean Smith US actor/relay runner (Olympics-gold-1952).
  • 1932 - Birth of Louis Woodard Jones New Rochelle New York, 4X400m relayer (Olympics-gold-56).
  • 1936 - Henry Forster cricket (Hants and Oxford University, Governor-General of Australia), dies.
  • 1936 - Horace Stoneham elected president of New York Giants.
  • 1939 - First NFL pro bowl, New York Giants beat All Stars 13-10 in Wrigley Field.
  • 1942 - Franklin Roosevelt asks commissioner to continue baseball during WWII.
  • 1942 - Melvin Winfield Sheppard runner (Olympics-gold-08, 12), dies at 58.
  • 1943 - Birth of Mike Marshall Major League Baseball pitcher (1974 Cy Young Award).
  • 1949 - Birth of Howard Allen Twitty Phoenix Arizona, PGA golfer (1979 BC Open).
  • 1953 - Birth of Randy White NFL tackle (Dallas Cowboys).
  • 1956 - Bauer Marlene wins LPGA Sea Island Golf Open.
  • 1956 - Birth of Paul Parker cricketer (one Test England vs Australia 1981).
  • 1956 - Birth of Vera Sosulya USSR, toboggan (Olympics-gold-1980).
  • 1956 - NFL Pro Bowl: East beats West 31-30.
  • 1957 - Brooklyn Dodgers sign a new three year lease for Ebbets Field.
  • 1958 - New York Yankees sign million dollar plus deal to show 140 games on WPIX TV.
  • 1960 - Birth of Tim Curtis cricketer (England righty batsman in five Tests 1988-89).
  • 1961 - NFL Pro Bowl: West beats East 35-31.

  • 1995 - San Diego Chargers beat Pittsburgh Steelers 17-13 for AFC championship.
  • 1995 - San Francisco 49ers beat Dallas Cowboys for NFC championship.
  • 1997 - Chicago Bulls player Dennis Rodman kicks cameraman, Eugene Amos, in the groin.

Space exploration history:

  • 1969 - Soyuz 5 launched by Soviet Union.
  • 1976 - US-German Helios B solar probe launched into solar orbit.
  • 1997 - Space Shuttle Atlantis docks with Mir Space Station.
  • 2005 - ESA's SMART-1 lunar orbiter discovers elements such as calcium, aluminum, silicon, iron and other surface elements on the moon.
  • 2006 - NASA's Stardust mission successfully ends, the first to return dust from a comet.
  • 2007 - Comet McNaught makes perigee after coming close to the sun.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1934 - 8.4 earthquake in India/Nepal, 10,700 die.
  • 1993 - In Hokkaido, Japan, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurs. Two people killed, 614 injured and substantial damage.
