Personal computer history:

  • 1984 - Jack Tramiel, founder of Commodore International, resigns as president, CEO, and a director. The resignation was due to Chairman Irving Gould's refusal to allow Tramiel's sons in the company.
  • 1999 - Advanced Micro Devices introduces the low-power K6-2 processors, designed for notebook use. They include 3DNow technology, and a 100 MHz processor bus. Speeds and prices are 266 MHz (US$106), 300 MHz (US$187), and 333 MHz (US$299) each in quantities of 1,000.
  • 1999 - SyQuest announces that Iomega will purchase its intellectual property and US assets for US$9.5 million.
  • 2000 - Microsoft announces changes to its executive management. Steve Ballmer remains president and replaces Bill Gates as CEO. Gates remains chairman and becomes new chief software architect.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Disney completes the 29th Alice Comedy film, Alice's Little Parade.
  • 1930 - The first Mickey Mouse comic strip is published, in the New York Mirror. The strip is initially written by Walt Disney, and drawn by Ub Iwerks.
  • 1934 - The Silly Symphony film The China Shop is released to theaters.
  • 1934 - The Mickey Mouse film Shanghaied is released to theaters. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1938 - The film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has its New York premiere, at Radio City Music Hall.
  • 1939 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Lucky Day is released to theaters.
  • 1942 - Disney delivers the film All Together to the National Film Board of Canada. The film includes Mickey Mouse and the gang, plus Pinocchio and Geppetto.
  • 1947 - The first Merry Menagerie comic strip is published in newspapers, drawn by Bob Grant, written by Bob Karp.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Little Dog Lost.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring The Whiz Kid and the Mystery at Riverton, part two.
  • 1986 - Disney announces an upcoming stock split, four for one, as of February 10.
  • 1989 - Disney generally releases the film Beaches to theaters.
  • 1989 - The NBC TV network airs The Magnificent World of Disney: Davy Crockett: Guardian Spirit.
  • 1990 - The Walt Disney World Swan hotel opens in Walt Disney World.
  • 1992 - Disney stops filling distributors' orders for videotapes of the film Fantasia. Sales of videos of the film total over 14 million, making it the best-selling video of all time.
  • 1998 - The video title Belle's Magical World is released to home video in the USA. It contains the films Perfect Word, Broken Wing, and Fifi's Folly.
  • 2001 - The TV series Disney's House of Mouse premieres, part of Disney's One Saturday Morning.
  • 2002 - In Hollywood, Disney premieres the film Snow Dogs.
  • 2006 - Disney releases the film Glory Road to theaters in the USA.
  • 2012 - Disney re-releases Beauty and the Beast in a 3-D version.
  • 2012 - Disney releases the animated short film Tangled Ever After to theaters.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1975 - A retirement dinner is held for Zora Arkus-Duntov. He receives a scale model of the 4-Rotor Corvette.
  • 2009 - (to January 19) In Scottsdale, Arizona, the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction is held. Some highlights:

World War II history:

  • 1935 - Saar decides in a plebiscite to unite with Germany.
  • 1940 - Based on captured german plans and other information, Belgian army commanders are told a German attack on January 14 is "quasi-certain".
  • 1940 - (evening) Belgian radio current-affairs program announces a message from the Belgian chief of the general staff, telling all 80,000 Belgian soldiers on leave to return immediately to their units.
  • 1940 - (evening) The Belgian chief of the general staff orders all barriers on the southwest border with France removed immediately to allow quicker entry of English and Frenh troops.
  • 1942 - The Dutch garrison surrenders Borneo to the Japanese.
  • 1942 - At the Washington Conference, Britain and the US formally ratify a plan for American long-range bomber forces to operate alongside British Bomber Command in Europe. The plan calls for an American bomber force of 3500 by April 1943.
  • 1942 - German submarines begin an assault on coastal shipping on the east coast of the United States.
  • 1942 - At Saint James' in London, England, a conference is held of nine occupied countries of Europe. They issue a declaration against acts of vengeance by the general public against acts of violence. A principal war aim of governments of the conference is punishment of war crimes, and justice to those perpetrating crimes and those who ordered them.
  • 1943 - In the western Mediterranean, west of Algiers, Royal Canadian Navy corvette Ville de Québec in convoy TE-13 sinks German submarine U-224.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command head Arthur Harris sends a letter to Air Ministry head Charles Portal, Trafford Leigh-Mallory, and General Bernard Montgomery, noting that his heavy bombers should not be diverted from German industry targets to specific Overlord tasks.
  • 1945 - British Royal Marine Commando unit launches a third assault on Kapelsche Veer, Holland, at night. Germans, safely underground, fire mortar shells on their own positions, inflicting heavy casualties on the British attackers.
  • 1946 - India announces its total expenditure during the war: US$12 billion, with US$1.1 billion directly against Germany. Total casualties: 180,000.

Video game history:

  • 2004 - TDK releases the Star Trek: Shattered Universe video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - Sweden and France sign the Treaty of Bärwalde, for Sweden to lead an army in Europe for six years. France will pay 400,000 riksdaler per year for Sweden to maintain an army of 36,000 men to fight for German liberties and the freedom of Baltic trade.
  • 1713 - Turks set a blockade of King Karl's position outside Bender.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2003 - In New York City, the New York International Numismatic Convention is held. Heritage World Coin Auctions conducts the sale of the Sid and Alicia Belzberg Collection. Some highlights (in Canadian dollars, including 15 percent auction fee):
    • 1 cent 1936 dot SP-66: US$230,000 (CDN$353,000), a new record for any North American small cent;
    • 10 cents 1936 dot SP-66: $114,800;
    • 25 cents 1875H PCGS SP-68: $61,000;
    • 50 cents 1870 no LCW PCGS SP-64: $161,500;
    • 50 cents 1921 PCGS MS-65: $122,000;

  • 1862 - The US Mint melts 1060 unsold 1860 and 1861 proof sets.
  • 1909 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1909-dated quarter dollars.
  • 1912 - Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh informs Mint Director George Roberts that James Earle Fraser had been selected to design the 5-cent coin.

Sports history:

  • 1905 - Team Ottawa Silver Seven plays team Dawson City (Yukon) for the Stanley Cup in the National Hockey Association. Ottawa wins 23-2, with Frank McGee scoring 14 goals.
  • 1908 - Montréal Wanderers sweep Ottawa Victorias in two for the Stanley Cup of ice hockey.
  • 1911 - South Africa's first cricket win over Australia, at Adelaide.
  • 1922 - Former Chicago White Sox player Buck Weaver, involved in Black Sox scandal, applies unsuccessfully for reinstatement.
  • 1957 - Mickey Wright wins Sea Island Golf Open.
  • 1957 - NFL Pro Bowl: West beats East 19-10.
  • 1962 - Wilt Chamberlain of Philadelphia Warriors scores NBA-record 73 points versus Chicago Bulls.
  • 1963 - AFL Pro Bowl: West beats East 21-14.
  • 1963 - NFL Pro Bowl: East beats West 30-20.
  • 1968 - Minnesota North Stars' center Bill Masterton fatally injured (dies on 15th).
  • 1972 - Former umpire, now housewife Bernice Gera wins her suit against baseball, initiated on March 15, 1971 to be allowed to umpire.
  • 1973 - Efskind skates world record 1000m (1:17.6).
  • 1974 - Super Bowl VIII: Miami Dolphins beat Minnesota Vikings, 24-7 in Houston, Texas; Most Valuable Player: Larry Csonka, running back.
  • 1981 - New York Islanders' Mike Bossy's 15th career hat trick-4 goals.
  • 1982 - Both Henry Aaron and Frank Robinson are elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1983 - Quebec Nordiques play 251st NHL game without being shut out.
  • 1983 - American Medical Association urges ban on boxing, cites Muhammad Ali's deteriorating condition.
  • 1985 - 23rd Tennis Federation Cup: Czechoslovakia beats USA in Nagoya, Japan (2-1).
  • 1985 - 99-year-old Otto Bucher scores a hole-in-one at Spanish golf course.
  • 1985 - Chicago Blackhawks' Doug Wilson fails on 12th penalty shot against New York Islanders.
  • 1988 - Los Angeles Dodgers'/San Diego Padres' Steve Garvey retires.
  • 1991 - Phil Mickelson wins PGA Northern Telecom Golf Open.
  • 1991 - A fight and stampede at a pre-season exhibition match between South African football teams Chiefs and Pirates in the town of Orkney near Johannesburg, South Africa leaves 42 dead.
  • 1992 - Excavation of new ballpark at Gateway (Jacobs Field) Chicago begins.
  • 1994 - Tonya Harding's bodyguard Shawn Eric Eckardt, and Derrick Brian Smith are arrested and charged with conspiracy in attack of skater Nancy Kerrigan.
  • 1995 - 26 NHL teams unanimously ratify agreement to end NHL strike.
  • 1998 - CBS pays US$4 billion to televise AFC games for eight years.
  • 1999 - After 13 years of playing NBA basketball, superstar Michael Jordan announces his second retirement from basketball.
  • 2002 - In the AFC Divisional Playoffs the New England Patriots defeat the Oakland Raiders 16-13 in overtime at their home finale Foxboro Stadium.
  • 2005 - American Major League Baseball and the Players Association agree in principle on a stricter steroid-testing policy. The new program will randomly test players year-round.
  • 2005 - Milwaukee Brewers owners unanimously approve the US$223 million sale of the baseball franchise to Los Angeles investor Mark Attanasio.
  • 2006 - Johnny Estrada agrees to a US$2 million, one-year contract to catch for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
  • 2022 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats San Jose Sharks by score 3-0.
  • 2022 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Los Angeles Kings beats Pittsburgh Penguins by score 6-2.

  • 1994 - The Barona Indian tribe in the USA opens the largest tented casino in the world, at the Barona Casino near Lakeside, California, with a total of 105,000 square feet, including almost 1000 video gaming machines.
  • 2009 - Citigroup and Morgan Stanley agree to combine their brokerages, with Morgan Stanley paying Citigroup US$2.7 billion for a 51 percent stake in the joint venture. The new Morgan Stanley Smith Barney will have US$1.7 trillion in client assets.
  • 2016 - Iran releases US Navy boats and crew that were picked up January 12 in Iranian waters.
  • 2016 - US Powerball lottery is US$1.6 billion, won by three ticket buyers in California, Florida, and Tennessee.
  • 2021 - The US House of Representatives votes to impeach President Donald J. Trump.

  • 1559 - Elizabeth I crowned queen of England in Westminster Abbey.
