Personal computer history:

  • 1995 - Philippe Kahn resigns as chairman of Borland International.
  • 1998 - America Online announces an agreement to acquire Netscape Communications for US$4.2 billion in stock.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1941 - Walt Disney fires Art Babbit from the Disney Studio.
  • 1950 - The animated film Morris, the Midget Moose is released.
  • 1954 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the film So Dear to My Heart.
  • 1955 - The Mickey Mouse Club Circus attraction opens in Disneyland. Each live show lasts 75 minutes.
  • 1955 - (to January 8, 1956) The first Christmas at Disneyland festival is held, with parade and music concert.
  • 1968 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Treasure of San Bosco Reef, part one.
  • 1991 - The Celebration U.S.A.! parade at Disneyland makes its last run.
  • 1992 - Grenada Grenadines issues fifteen postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of Goofy, depicting scenes from Goofy films.
  • 1993 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film The Adventures of Huck Finn on laserdisc for US$39.99.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in the Netherlands.
  • 1999 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. A theme park ride like Disney's Splash Mountain appears, in Florida.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. The radio plays "You're listening to Radio Disney. The songs you love, rewritten for babies."
  • 2002 - Disney announces it is making a US$74 million financial write-down on the film Treasure Planet, due to disappointing theater receipts. This is the largest write-down in animated film history.
  • 2011 - Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York includes a giant inflated Captain Mickey balloon representing Disney Cruise Line.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1968 - At the Riverside International Raceway in California, the American Road Race of Champions final races of the SCCA Club Racing series are held.
    • Finishing 2nd in A Production class and 2nd overall is the #4 Corvette driven by Tony DeLorenzo.
    • Finishing 2nd in B Production class and 10th overall is the #25 Corvette driven by Jerry Thompson.
    • Finishing 3rd in B Production class and 14th overall is the #34 Corvette driven by Dick Simon.
    • Finishing 3rd in A Production class is the #3 Corvette driven by Michael Summers.

  • 1993 - Mercury Marine completes building all LT5 engines destined for current and future Corvette ZR-1 cars. Since starting production in 1989, about 7250 engines were built.
  • 2010 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Gran Turismo 5 video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US. Driveable Corvette models are: 2000 C5-R, 1954, 1963 coupe, 1996 Grand Sport, 1969 convertible, 1969 coupe, 1963 Z06, 2000 Z06, 2004 Z06, 2006 Z06, 2006 Z06 RM, 1990 ZR-1, 2009 ZR1, 2009 ZR1 RM.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - The Soviet Red Army begins a counteroffensive in the Rostov sector.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler repeats his order for the German 6th Army to remain in Stalingrad, after assurances from Hermann Göring that the Luftwaffe could supply them adequately.
  • 1944 - In the Cabot Strait, Canada, German submarine U-1228 torpedoes and sinks Canadian corvette HMCS Shawnigan. All 90 on board die.
  • 1944 - 110 B-29 bombers from the Mariana islands attack Nakajima aircraft factory near Tokyo, Japan.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Todd Rogers scores a world record 653,990 on the Gorf arcade game.
  • 1992 - Sega releases the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game for the Genesis and Game Gear game systems. Sega calls the day "Sonic 2sday".
  • 1995 - At the Shoshinkai show in Chiba, Japan, Nintendo displays the 64-bit cartridge-based Nintendo 64 video game system. Target ship date is April 21, for 25,000 yen (US$250). Games demonstrated are Super Mario 64 and Kirby's Air Ride. Nintendo gives details of the 64DD add-on for the Nintendo 64, with a 64 MB hard drive.
  • 1995 - Hudson releases the Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire video game for the PC Engine in Japan. The game is only released at the Shoshinkai game show.
  • 1998 - Eidos releases the Tomb Raider III video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character says various words, trying to remember a code word. One of the words he says is "Nintendo".
  • 2010 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Gran Turismo 5 video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.

USA coin history:

  • 2009 - The US Mint launches the 2009 Zachary Taylor Presidential dollar in Orange, Virginia.

Sports history:

  • 1938 - National Semi-Pro Basketball Congress authorizes yellow basketball.
  • 1960 - Wilt Chamberlain pulls down 55 rebounds in a game (NBA record).
  • 1970 - Stanford's quarterback Jim Plunkett wins Heisman Trophy.
  • 1976 - NBA Atlanta Hawks end a 28-game road losing streak.
  • 1977 - Miami Dolphins' Bob Greise passes for six touchdowns vs Saint Louis Cardinals (55-14).
  • 1979 - Los Angeles Kings' Charley Simmer fails on 8th penalty shot against New York Islanders.
  • 1996 - The Toronto Argonauts defeat the Edmonton Eskimos 43-37 to win the 84th Grey Cup at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, Ontario. The game is notable for the heavy snowfall that took place, resulting in the game being dubbed "The Snow Bowl".
  • 2002 - The Montreal Alouettes win the Canadian Football League Championship for the first time since relocating from Baltimore, defeating the host Edmonton Eskimos 25-16 in the 90th Grey Cup at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • 2007 - The National Australian Football League draft takes place.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: San Jose Sharks beats Ottawa Senators by score 6-3.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Seattle Kraken beats Carolina Hurricanes by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Los Angeles Kings by score 6-2.
  • 2021 - At Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, USA, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Arizona Coyotes by score 5-3.
  • 2021 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats Anaheim Ducks by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Nashville Predators by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA, NHL regular season game: Minnesota Wild beats New Jersey Devils by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats New York Islanders by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, USA, NHL regular season game: Detroit Red Wings beats Saint Louis Blues by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL regular season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats Winnipeg Jets by score 3-0.
  • 2021 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: Washington Capitals beats Montreal Canadiens by score 6-3.
  • 2021 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Pittsburgh Penguins beats Vancouver Canucks by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Florida Panthers beats Philadelphia Flyers by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: Boston Bruins beats Buffalo Sabres by score 5-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1969 - Apollo 12 returns to Earth.
  • 1991 - US 75th manned space mission "STS 44" Atlantis 10 launched.
  • 2021 - NASA launches the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the first attempt to deflect an asteroid for the purpose of learning how to protect Earth.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2008 - Floods in Santa Catarina, Brazil kill 126 and force the evacuation of over 78,000 people.

USA history:

  • 1832 - South Carolina passes Ordinance of Nullification.
  • 1863 - Civil War battle for Lookout Mountain begins in Tennessee.
  • 1871 - National Rifle Association organizes (New York City).
  • 1896 - First US absentee voting law enacted by Vermont.
  • 1944 - US bombers based on Saipan first attack Tokyo, Japan.
  • 1946 - Last day of Office of Price Administration in the USA.
  • 1947 - Un-American Activities Committee finds "Hollywood 10" in contempt because of their refusal to reveal whether they were communists.
  • 1954 - First US Presidential airplane christened.
  • 1963 - Jack Ruby fatally shoots suspected President John Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald at Dallas police headquarters in Dallas, Texas. First live murder on TV.
  • 1963 - US President Lyndon Johnson issues National Security Action Memo Number 273, discarding John Kennedy's peace plans for America in Vietnam.
  • 1966 - 400 die of respiratory failure and heart attack in killer New York City smog.
  • 1969 - Apollo 12 returns to Earth.
  • 1971 - Dan "DB" Cooper parachutes from a Northwest Airlines 727 jet aircraft over Washington State, USA with US$200,000 ransom money, never to be seen again.
  • 1971 - Prison rebellion at Rahway State Prison in New Jersey.
  • 1987 - In Southern California, magnitude 6.5 and 6.7 earthquakes occur, about 12 hours apart. Felt throughout much of southern California from San Diego and Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Nevada and Tempe, Arizona. Also felt at Tijuana and Ensenada, Mexico.
  • 1991 - First international flight from Long Island's MacArthur Airport (to Mexico).
