Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Atari buys rights to Amiga's graphics and sound chip designs, still in development.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A child mentions that he used to stand on an overpass and drop computers on the freeway. A woman responds "That's how we got our Kaypro".

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Walt Disney copyrights the film Steamboat Willie.
  • 1929 - King Features writes to Walt Disney, acknowledging the receipt of six Mickey Mouse comic strip samples, and asking for six more to show the publisher, William Randolph Hearst.
  • 1952 - The Mickey Mouse film Pluto's Christmas Tree is released. Pluto, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Chip, and Dale also appear.
  • 1956 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled At Home with Donald Duck. It is a compilation of cartoons.
  • 1958 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the film The Boston Tea Party, which is the first half of the film Johnny Tremain.
  • 1965 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Three Lives of Thomasina, part two.
  • 1975 - Buena Vista releases the film Dr. Syn, Alias The Scarecrow to theaters in the US.
  • 1978 - (to January 30) In Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress holds an exhibition "Building a Better Mouse", including over 120 items from their collection.
  • 1981 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled A Disney Storybook part two.
  • 1984 - The Disney Channel airs the second episode of the series Still the Beaver, entitled Thanksgiving Day.
  • 1986 - The Star Traders shop opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1990 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Three Men and a Little Lady to theaters. The film cost US$30 million to make.
  • 1990 - The CBS TV network airs the TV show The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson.
  • 1993 - The NBC TV network airs the special Disney's Countdown to Kid's Day.
  • 1994 - The 3D film Honey, I Shrunk the Audience premieres in Journey into Imagination in Future World in Epcot at Walt Disney World.
  • 1994 - The Circle-Vision film From Time to Time opens in the Transportarium in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1994 - The Timekeeper attraction opens in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network airs the special "Absent-Minded Inventors and the Search for Flubber".
  • 2001 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Out Cold to theaters in the USA.
  • 2007 - The What's Next Cafè opens at Disney's Wide World of Sports resort at Walt Disney World.
  • 2008 - Disney releases the 3D animated film Bolt in theaters in the USA and Canada.
  • 2013 - Touchstone releases the DreamWorks film Delivery Man to theaters in Russia.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1971 - In Daytona, Florida, the IMSA Daytona 250 is held for the first time.
    • Finishing 1st in GTO class and 1st overall is the Toye English #57 1969 Corvette L-88 driven by Dave Heinz and Don Yenko.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTO class and 6th overall is the #22 Corvette driven by Denny Long.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTO class and 12th overall is the #99 Corvette driven by Phil Currin.
    • Finishing 4th in GTO class and 13th overall is the #63 Corvette driven by Jim Jeffries.
    • Finishing 5th in GTO class and 27th overall is the #28 Corvette driven by Andrew Bach.
    • Placing 6th in GTO class and 39th overall is the #24 Corvette driven by John Floyd.
    • Placing 7th in GTO class and 44th overall is the #81 Corvette driven by Ron Stafford.
    • Placing 8th in GTO class and 51st overall is the #46 Corvette driven by Billy Coates.

  • 1986 - New Century Vista Film Company releases the film The Wraith to theaters in the USA. The lead tough guy drives a customized Corvette, model year about 1980. The climax of the film is a race between the Corvette and a mystery black car.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - British destroyer Gipsy is sunk by a mine off the east coast of Britain.
  • 1939 - German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau leave German ports.
  • 1939 - Japanese liner Terukuni Maru is sunk in the North Sea by a German mine.
  • 1940 - Greek forces capture Koritsa, Albania, from Italian forces.
  • 1941 - German Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt's army group seizes Rostov on the Don river.
  • 1943 - (0100 hours) The US Pacific Fleet, commanded by Admiral Chester Nimitz, begins Operation Galvanic, Marine landings on Tarawa, Makin, and Abemama in the Gilbert Islands chain.
  • 1944 - 160 British bombers attack Homberg-Meerbeck, Germany.
  • 1944 - 273 British bombers attack oil plants at Castrop Rauxel, Germany.

Video game history:

  • 1989 - Atari introduces the Lynx hand-held video game system in the USA. It features a 4.0MHz 65C02 processor, 16-bit graphics processor, 6 sound channels, 3.5-inch color LCD screen, 16 colors out of 4096 palette. Weight is under one pound. Price is US$150-200, with the Galifornia Games video game cartridge.
  • 1990 - In Japan, Nintendo releases the Super Family Computer (Super Famicom) game system. The system uses a 16-bit processor, has 512 kB RAM, displays graphics in over 32,000 colors, and includes the Super Mario World video game. Price is 25,000 yen.
  • 1990 - Nintendo releases the F-Zero video game for the Super Famicom in Japan.
  • 1990 - Nintendo releases the PilotWings video game for the Super Famicom in Japan.
  • 1994 - Nintendo releases the Donkey Kong Country video game for the Super NES in the US and Canada. Price is US$69.95. The game was developed by Rare in England.
  • 1997 - Nintendo releases the Diddy Kong Racing video game for the Nintendo 64.
  • 1998 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US. Price is US$59.95.
  • 2001 - Sega drops the price of the Dreamcast in the US from US$79.95 to US$49.95.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Super Smash Bros. Melee video game for the GameCube in Japan.
  • 2002 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire video games for the Game Boy Advance in Japan.
  • 2003 - Midway releases the Spy Hunter 2 video game for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox in the US.
  • 2003 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Colosseum video game for the GameCube in Japan.
  • 2003 - Ubisoft releases the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time video game for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A bowling alley has two arcade video games: Time Waster and Pong 85.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Nintendo DS handheld video game system in the US and Canada. It features 3-inch diagonal screens, stereo speakers, microphone, IEEE 802.11 wireless communications with range about 30 feet. It includes built-in software PictoChat and a demo of Metroid Prime: Hunters. Size is 5.85 x 3.33 x 1.13 inches. Price in the US is US$149.99; price in Canada is CDN$199. This is the first Nintendo system to debut outside Japan. Eight launch titles are available.
  • 2004 - Activision releases the Spider-Man 2 video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2004 - Electronic Arts releases the Madden NFL 2005 video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2004 - Namco releases the Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2004 - Namco releases the Ridge Racer DS video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario 64 DS video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2009 - Nintendo launches the Nintendo DSi XL in Japan, with a 4.2-inch diagonal screen. Price is 20,000 yen (US$222). Case color choices are dark brown, wine red, and white.
  • 2010 - Nintendo releases the Donkey Kong Country Returns video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1909 - Prime Minister Staaf makes a careful policy declaration, calling the employers' lockout and the workers' strike wrong, because they broke agreements.
  • 1998 - Argentina issues a postage stamp depicting Swede Raoul Wallenberg.
  • 1999 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the USA. Swedish furniture chain IKEA is parodied as "SHØP". A character notes: "These Swedish furniture designers sure have some far-out ideas. I mean a green table!?".

Canadian coin history:

  • 1953 - The auction catalogue of the Canada Coin Exchange uses the term "Proof-Like" for the first time, suggested by F.S. Epps of Michigan. The term is used to describe the quality of Canadian coins minted for collectors, which appear similar to Proof coins of other countries.
  • 1986 - The Royal Canadian Mint informs the minister responsible for the mint, Monique Vezina, about the loss of the new dollar coin dies.

USA coin history:

  • 1963 - US President John Kennedy requests Congressional approval for appropriation of US$675,000 for the Treasury Department to produce and ship 50 million silver dollars for use by gambling casinos.
  • 2003 - The House of Representatives pass a resolution to preserve President Franklin Roosevelt's portrait on the dime.

Sports history:

  • 1902 - First night football game, Philadelphia Athletics beats Kanaweola AC, 39-0.
  • 1914 - Billy Mallett of Hamilton Tigers football team kicks 9 singles in a game.
  • 1934 - New York Yankees buy Joe DiMaggio from San Francisco Seals.
  • 1970 - New York Knicks' first game against Cleveland Cavaliers, Knicks win 102-94 at Madison Square Gardens, New York.
  • 1971 - New York Rangers score a NHL record eight goals in one period.
  • 1980 - Gene Michaels replaces Dick Howser as New York Yankees' 25th manager.
  • 1988 - Ted Turner officially buys Jim Crockett Promotions, known as NWA Crockett, and turns it into World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
  • 1991 - Terry Pendleton wins Major League Baseball's National League's Most Valuable Player Award.
  • 2004 - The Toronto Argonauts win the Canadian Football League Championship for the first time in seven years, defeating the British Columbia Lions in the 92nd Grey Cup 27-19 at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa, Canada.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Arizona Coyotes beats Los Angeles Kings by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Seattle Kraken beats Washington Capitals by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Chicago Blackhawks beats Vancouver Canucks by score 1-0.
  • 2021 - At UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats New York Islanders by score 3-0.
  • 2021 - At TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Boston Bruins by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats Buffalo Sabres by score 5-4.
  • 2021 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Minnesota Wild by score 5-4.

USA history:

  • 1789 - North Carolina ratifies US Constitution, becomes 12th US state.
  • 1824 - First Jewish Reform congregation established, in Charleston, South Carolina.
  • 1847 - Steamer Phoenix is lost on Lake Michigan, 200 dead.
  • 1877 - American inventor Thomas A. Edison announces his successful development of the "talking machine" or phonograph.
  • 1922 - Rebecca Latimer Felton is sworn in as US Senator at age 87. First female US senator.
  • 1933 - First US ambassador to USSR, W.C. Bullitt, begins service.
  • 1945 - General Motors' workers go on strike.
  • 1952 - First US postage stamp in two colors (rotary process) introduced.
  • 1959 - Jack Benny (violin) and Richard Nixon (piano) play their famed duet.
  • 1963 - US President John Kennedy administration asks Congress to authorize coining of silver dollars for use by gambling casinos.
  • 1964 - World's longest suspension bridge "Verrazano Narrows" opens (New York City, New York).
  • 1977 - First flight of the Concorde from London to New York.
  • 1979 - After false radio reports from the Ayatollah Khomeini that the Americans had occupied the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the United States Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan is attacked by a mob and set afire, killing four.
  • 1980 - A fire at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada kills 85 people. The cause is determined to be faulty electrical system on the first floor.
  • 1986 - US National Security Council member Oliver North and his secretary start shredding documents implicating them in selling weapons to Iran and channeling the proceeds to help fund the Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
  • 1988 - Ted Turner officially buys Jim Crockett Promotions, known as NWA Crockett, and turns it into World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
