Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - Microsoft ships Microsoft Windows version 1.01 for the IBM PC, for US$100. It is delivered two years after the initial announcement of the product.
  • 1996 - Libya issues two postage stamps (100 and 200 dinar) depicting personal computers.
  • 1998 - Sierra releases the Half-Life computer game for Windows-based computers in the US.
  • 1998 - At the Comdex trade show, Sony unveils the Memory Stick memory drive and storage devices. An 8 MB storage unit measures 1.5 inches long, and is priced at US$40.
  • 2000 - At the Comdex trade show, Intel introduces the Pentium 4 processor, at speeds of 1.4 and 1.5 GHz. It features 8 kB Level 1 data cache, 12 kB Level 1 instruction cache, 256 kB Level 2 cache, 400 MHz system bus, NetBurst micro-architecture. The processor requires Rambus memory be used with it. The processor includes MMX and SSE instructions, and adds 144 new multimedia instructions: Streaming SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2). The processor incorporates 42 million transistors in a 0.18-micron process. Code-name during development was Willamette. Prices are US$819 (1.5 GHz) and US$644 (1.4 GHz) in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2000 - At the Comdex trade show, several major American personal computer manufacturers release desktop computers using the Pentium 4 processor, including Dell Computer, Compaq Computer, Gateway, and IBM.
  • 2002 - Intel releases 2.1 and 2.2 GHz Celeron processors. They include 128 kB level 2 cache and 400 MHz system bus. Prices are US$89 and US$103 respectively, in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2004 - Apple Computer opens its first European Apple Store, in London, England.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1930 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film Pioneer Days. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1942 - The Pluto film Pluto at the Zoo is released to theaters.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled The Best Doggoned Dog in the World, including portions of the film Old Yeller, and the entire film Arizona Sheepdog.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the eighth "Elfego Baca" episode, Mustang Man, Mustang Maid.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled Moochie of Pop Warner Football: The Pee Wees Versus City Hall.
  • 1963 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film The Incredible Journey to theaters. The film is based on the book by Sheila Burnford.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Moon-Spinners, part one.
  • 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Mouseketeers at Walt Disney World.
  • 1988 - The NBC TV network airs The Magical World of Disney show, entitled Rainbow in the Thunder airs. It is a two hour show about Davy Crockett.
  • 1989 - A $10 Disney Dollar is added to the theme parks, featuring Minnie Mouse.
  • 1992 - Buena Vista International releases the film Beauty and the Beast to theaters in Denmark and Sweden.
  • 1993 - The ABC TV network airs the last episode of Where I Live.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista releases the Miramax live-action feature film Rounders to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 1998 - Disney releases the Pixar film A Bug's Life to theaters in Los Angeles.
  • 2003 - John Bryson tells Roy Disney that Roy would not be re-nominated to the board of directors.
  • 2022 - Disney announces Bob Iger would return as CEO of the company, replacing Bob Chapek.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1960 - At the Riverside International Raceway in California, the United States Grand Prix race is held. The CERV (which now means Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle) is first shown in public, driven by Zora Arkus-Duntov. It is a mid-engine, open wheel, single-seat prototype racing car, with independent rear suspension. The car weighs about 1700 pounds. The 283-ci V8 has an aluminum block and aluminum cylinder heads.
  • 1986 - Grenada issues a 60-cent postage stamp depicting a 1963 Corvette.
  • 1992 - The 8th Annual Palm Springs Road Races are held, in Palm Springs, California, over three days. Chevrolet kicks off the 40th anniversary celebration of the Corvette, introducing the 1993 Corvette ZR-1, now with 405hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. Among the cars on show and racing are the Sting Ray racer, Astro-Vette, a Scaglietti Corvette, world record-holding ZR-1 and L98 Corvettes, Sebring ZR-1 Corvette, 1956 SR-2, Mako Shark, Manta Ray, Corvette Indy, 1963 Golf Oil racer, 1962 Golf Oil racer, two 1963 Grand Sports, 1963 Z06 Corvette, 1969 Owens Corning Fiberglas L-88.
  • 2000 - At the Sebring International Raceway in Florida, the Corvette Racing team practice races the Corvette C5-R, with Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr, over three days.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Italians demand Tunisia, Corsica, Nice, and Savoy from France.
  • 1939 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 8 "for the Conduct of the War". Code-words for the day prior to attack on the West will be Danzig (proceed) and Augsburg (delay). If Holland shows no resistance, the invasion is to take on the character of a peaceful occupation. Centres of population in Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg are not to be attacked without strategic military necessity.
  • 1940 - Hungary signs the Tripartite Pact with Germany, Japan, and Italy.
  • 1941 - Japanese Ambassador to the US Nomura, and Suburu Kurusu deliver a diplomatic compromise to Cordell Hull, US Secretary of State in Washington, D.C. The proposal is to not advance by arms into any more regions, withdraw from French Indo-China following peace with China, the US would supply oil to Japan, and the US would restore relations as of prior to the July asset freeze.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler appoints Field Marshal Erich von Manstein to head Army Group Don, ordering him to restore positions along the Don River, and relieve forces in Stalingrad.
  • 1943 - The British 8th Army commences Operation Encroach toward Rome, Italy.
  • 1943 - In the North Atlantic, Royal Canadian Navy corvettes Snowberry and Calgary and Royal Navy frigate Nene sink German submarine U-536.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command launches a fourth raid on Homberg oil targets.
  • 1945 - The International Military Tribunal for war crimes opens at Nuremberg, with 22 defendants.
  • 1993 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Tarawa.
  • 2000 - Belgium issues three postage stamps in a series marking the 20th century, depicting concentration camps, the first atomic bomb, and the Yalta Conference.

Video game history:

  • 2003 - Microsoft drops the price of the Xbox in Japan from 24800 yen to 16800 yen (about US$155).
  • 2005 - Microsoft hosts a 30-hour "Zero Hour" launch party for the Xbox 360 in Palmdale, California. 500 Xbox 360 systems are available for the over 2000 invited fans to try the eighteen launch titles.
  • 2007 - Nintendo unveils two special editions of its DS handheld gaming unit. One version will be colored gold and come with the epic adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass while a metallic pink model will come with puppy training title Nintendogs. The new bundles will go on sale in the United States on November 23.
  • 2007 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy XI: Revenant Wings video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2007 - Electronic Arts releases the Rock Band video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2007 - The magazine PlayStation: The Official Magazine first goes on sale in the USA.
  • 2007 - Sony CEA releases the Unchartered: Drake's Fortune video game for the PlayStation 3 in the US.
  • 2011 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.
  • 2012 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale video game for the PlayStation 3 and Vita in the USA.
  • 2012 - Square Enix releases the Hitman: Absolution video game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2012 - Telltale Games releases The Walking Dead Episode Five: No Time Left video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2012 - Atlus releases the Persona 4 Golden video game for the Vita in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1680 - The Riksdag meets. The lower Estates demand a return of land to the crown, and an investigation of the Regency; the King supports both initiatives. The Estates declare the king to have greater powers, no longer obliged to follow the Form of Government, or rule with the advice of Council.
  • 1693 - In Stockholm, a Resolution of the Riksdag acknowledges the absolute power of the sovereign King and his heirs.
  • 1700 - At Narva, King Karl XII with about 10,000 men defeats the Russian army of 40,000.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1977 - A 1911 dollar coin trial piece struck in lead is discovered in a vault in the East Block of the Parliament Buildings, in Ottawa. The piece is added to the Bank of Canada's National Currency Collection.
  • 1981 - In Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto International Coin Fair and International Numismatic Society Joint Convention is held. Over 100 dealers and 2600 collectors attend.
  • 1995 - The Royal Canadian Mint announces The Great Canadian Coin Kit, Young Collector's Edition. The kit is intended to introduce children over 8 years to coin collecting. It sells for $24.95.

USA coin history:

  • 1861 - Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase writes to US Mint Director James Pollock saying "The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins."
  • 1936 - Distribution commences of San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge half dollars.
  • 2008 - Bowers and Merena Auctions conducts a coin auction in Baltimore. Some highlights:
    • 1795 Liberty Cap cent, Reeded Edge, one of seven known, G-4 PCGS: $402,500.

Sports history:

  • 1909 - Jack Williams of Ottawa Rough Riders kicks nine singles in a game.
  • 1942 - NHL abolishes regular season overtime until World War II is over.
  • 1966 - Dallas Cowboys sack Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterbacks an NFL record 12 times.
  • 1969 - Pele scores his 1,000th soccer goal.
  • 1977 - Walter Payton (Chicago Bears) rushes for NFL-record 275 yards.
  • 1980 - Billy Martin named American League Manager of the Year (Oakland Athletics).
  • 1982 - University of California, Berkeley executes "The Play" in a college football game against Stanford. Completing a wacky 57-yard kickoff return that includes five laterals, Kevin Moen runs through Stanford band members who had prematurely come onto the field. His touchdown stands and California wins 25-20.
  • 1983 - Cleveland Browns shutout New England Patriots 30-0.
  • 1983 - New York Giants' Butch Woolfolk ties NFL record of 43 attempts rushing.
  • 1985 - New York Yankees' Don Mattingly named American League Most Valuable Player.
  • 1995 - Sergei Grinkov, Soviet ice skater (Olympic Gold 1988, 1994) dies (heart attack) at age 28.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Washington Capitals beats San Jose Sharks by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Columbus Blue Jackets by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, USA, NHL regular season game: Arizona Coyotes beats Detroit Red Wings by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL regular season game: Dallas Stars beats Saint Louis Blues by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Boston Bruins beats Philadelphia Flyers by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats New York Islanders by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, NHL regular season game: Montreal Canadiens beats Nashville Predators by score 6-3.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: Pittsburgh Penguins beats Toronto Maple Leafs by score 2-0.
  • 2021 - At FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Florida Panthers beats Minnesota Wild by score 5-4.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Los Angeles Kings by score 5-4.
  • 2021 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: New Jersey Devils beats Tampa Bay Lightning by score 5-3.

Space exploration history:

  • 1933 - In Akron, Ohio, USA, the balloon Century of Progress is launched, with 7-foot diameter gondola, balloon capacity 600,000 cubic feet, rising to a record 61,238 feet.
  • 1984 - SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) is founded.
  • 1990 - US 68th manned space mission STS 38 (Atlantis 7) returns from space.
  • 1998 - The first module of the International Space Station, Zarya, is launched.
  • 1999 - The People's Republic of China launches the first Shenzhou spacecraft.
  • 2008 - An estimated 10-tonne object explodes in the atmosphere over Canadian provinces Alberta and Saskatchewan, landing south of Lone Rock, Saskatchewan. Within weeks, 130 stony meteorites (type H4), totalling 40 kg are recovered.
  • 2017 - Nature publishes an article recognising the high-velocity asteroid ?Oumuamua as originating from outside the Solar System, i.e. the first known interstellar object.

USA history:

  • 1789 - New Jersey becomes first state to ratify Bill of Rights.
  • 1866 - First US national convention of Grand Army of the Republic (veterans' organization).
  • 1866 - Howard University, Washington DC, is founded.
  • 1894 - US intervenes in Bluefields, Nicaragua.
  • 1914 - US State Department starts requiring photographs for passports.
  • 1919 - First municipally-owned airport in US opens in Tucson, Arizona.
  • 1923 - Garrett Morgan invents and patents the traffic signal.
  • 1938 - First documented anti-Semitic remarks over US radio (by Father Coughlin).
  • 1943 - US forces land on Tarawa and Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islanda.
  • 1953 - Scott Crossfield in Douglas Skyrocket, first to break Mach 2 (1300mph).
  • 1962 - US lifts blockade of Cuba.
  • 1967 - At 11 AM, Census Clock at US Department of Commerce ticks past 200 million.
  • 1969 - In Southern West Virginia, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurs. This is the largest known historical earthquake in West Virginia.
  • 1974 - The United States Department of Justice files its final anti-trust suit against AT&T, which leads to the break up of AT&T and its Bell System.
  • 1983 - In the U.S., an estimated 100 million people watch the controversial made-for-television movie The Day After, depicting a nuclear war and its effects on the United States.

  • 1977 - Egyptian President Sadat became first Arab leader to address Israeli Knesset.
  • 2008 - Oil prices drop to below US$50 a barrel, settling at US$49.62 a barrel, the lowest since May 23, 2005.
