Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - Apple Computer' Steve Jobs writes to the president of McIntosh Laboratory seeking worldwide release for name "Macintosh" for use in computer industry. Lawyers for the company deny the request.
  • 1992 - Fall COMDEX is held in Las Vegas, Nevada, with about 2,000 company booths, and 145,000 people attending.
  • 1992 - At Fall COMDEX, Advanced Micro Devices demos its 50 MHz 486 chips.
  • 1992 - At Fall COMDEX, Trident announces the Storm graphics accelerator chips for ISA, MCA, or VL-Bus graphics cards. The chips support up to 2 MB of video memory, allowing resolutions up to 1280x1024. Prices will be about US$23-30 each in volume.
  • 1992 - At COMDEX, IBM demonstrates its "Blue Lightning" 486 processor, running at 100 MHz internally. It is like a 486SLC2 with 16 kB cache, 386DX-compatible 32-bit bus interface, and clock tripler.
  • 1992 - Microsoft ships Microsoft Access 1.0 database program for Windows. Price is US$99.
  • 1998 - At the Comdex trade show, Iomega announces the Zip 250 drive. It uses an external SCSI or parallel port connection, and can read and write both 100 MB and 250 MB cartridges. Transfer rate is up to 1.7 MBps. Price is US$199. Price for 250 MB cartridges is about US$17 each.
  • 1998 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the AMD K6-2 processor at speeds of 366, 380, and 400 MHz. Bus speeds are 66, 95, and 100 MHz respectively, and volume prices are US$187, US$213, and US$283.
  • 2005 - Cuba issues a postage stamp depicting a personal computer.
  • 2005 - Morocco issues a 6-dirham postage stamp for the World Summit on the Information Society meeting in Tunis, depicting a laptop computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1954 - Disney acquires the movie rights to eleven of L. Frank Baum's Oz books, not including The Wizard of Oz.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the fourth "Davy Crockett" episode, Davy Crockett's Keelboat Race.
  • 1969 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Varda, The Peregrine Falcon.
  • 1986 - The TV movie The Leftovers airs.
  • 1987 - Grenada issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in tales by Hans Christian Andersen.
  • 1987 - Grenada Grenadines issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters in tales by Hans Christian Andersen.
  • 1988 - Peggy Lee, the voice of several characters in the film Lady and the Tramp, sues Disney for US$25 million, claiming her approval was not sought before the release of the film on videocassette.
  • 1990 - Disney releases the Mickey Mouse animated short film The Prince and the Pauper to theatres. Also appearing are Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and Pete.
  • 1990 - Disney generally releases the film The Rescuers Down Under to theaters. This is Disney's first official animated feature sequel. This is Disney's first animated film to not use physical cels in the production process.
  • 1991 - The NBC TV network begins airing the Walter and Emily show.
  • 1992 - Sierra Leone issues fifteen postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Christmas scenes.
  • 1997 - The live-action feature film Flubber premieres at La Guardia Performing Arts High School, in New York.
  • 1998 - The Westward Ho Conestoga Wagon Fries food stand opens in Frontierland at Disneyland.
  • 2004 - The Turtle Talk with Crush attraction opens in Epcot at Walt Disney World.
  • 2004 - The Stitch's Great Escape attraction opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. The location formerly housed The ExtraTerrorestrial Alien Encounter.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Due to supplier difficulties in supplying sheet magnesium for the XP-64 body, it is concluded that only one XP-64 could be made for the Sebring race.
  • 1970 - Bob Luebbe sells his 1967 Corvette L88 to David Laughlin.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Great Britain recognizes Italian empire over Ethiopia.
  • 1940 - (evening) 131 British Bomber Command aircraft make raids on four Hamburg targets.
  • 1940 - The borders of the Warsaw ghetto are shut off from the rest of the city by walls 10 feet high.
  • 1941 - Canada's Winnipeg Grenadiers and Royal Rifles of Canada arrive in Hong Kong to aid in the defence of the island. Royal Canadian Navy armed merchant cruiser Prince Robert escorted the troop ship Awatea.
  • 1944 - 4000 planes of the British RAF and US 8th Air Force drop 10,000 tons of bombs on the German Siegfried defences.
  • 1964 - Poland issues five postage stamps depicting the 1939-45 struggle.
  • 1995 - Guernsey/Alderney issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of liberation and return to the island.
  • 1998 - Marshall Islands issues seven postage stamps depicting World War II scenes.

Video game history:

  • 1998 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the film Enemy of the State to theaters in the USA. A NEC Turbo Express portable video game system appears.
  • 1999 - Electronic Arts releases the 007: Tomorrow Never Dies video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. When a character wins at roulette, he says "First thing tomorrow, we're getting a PlayStation 1".
  • 2004 - Atari releases the Atari Anthology video game collection for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. It includes 85 classic Atari arcade and 2600 games: Asteroids, Centipede, Tempest, Missile Command, Breakout, Yars' Revenge.
  • 2005 - Koei releases the Dynasty Warriors 5 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2008 - Nintendo releases the Animal Crossing: City Folk video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA.
  • 2010 - Ubisoft releases the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2010 - Activision releases the Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2010 - Sega releases the Sonic Colors video game for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1995 - Hungary issues a 100 forint postage stamp marking the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Nobel Prize fund.
  • 2003 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character proposing school reforms says "In the Swedish schools, the students grade the teachers on their performance."

Canadian coin history:

  • 1925 - Wayte Raymond conducts a three-day sale of the W.W.C. Wilson Collection, at the Anderson Galleries in New York City. The sale features many Canadian Specimen pieces and patterns.

USA coin history:

  • 2011 - The US Mint launches the 2011 Chickasaw National Recreation Area quarter dollar coin in Sulphur, Oklahoma.

Sports history:

  • 1924 - Cleveland Bulldogs lose to Frankford Yellowjackets, ends 31-game undefeated streak (NFL and major-league football record).
  • 1926 - New York Rangers' first game, beat Montreal Maroons 1-0.
  • 1962 - Wilt Chamberlain of NBA San Francisco Warriors scores 73 points versus New York Knicks.
  • 1974 - Milwaukee Bucks lose their 11th straight NBA game (team record).
  • 1976 - Rick Barry (San Francisco Warriors), ends then longest NBA free-throw streak of 60.
  • 1978 - Major Indoor Soccer League holds its first draft.
  • 1982 - Agreement reached ending 57-day football strike.
  • 1984 - Houston Rockets player blocks 20 Denver Nuggets shots tying NBA regulation game record.
  • 1988 - Robin Givens sues Mike Tyson for US$125 million for libel.
  • 1997 - The Toronto Argonauts win their second consecutive Canadian Football League title by defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 47-23 to win the 85th Grey Cup at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • 2003 - The Edmonton Eskimos win the Canadian Football League Championship for the first time in a decade, defeating the Montreal Alouettes 34-22 in the 91st Grey Cup at Taylor Field in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
  • 2021 - At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Anaheim Ducks beats Washington Capitals by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Vegas Golden Knights by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL regular season game: Dallas Stars beats Detroit Red Wings by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Edmonton Oilers by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, NHL regular season game: San Jose Sharks beats Minnesota Wild by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Enterprise Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, NHL regular season game: Arizona Coyotes beats Saint Louis Blues by score 3-2.

Space exploration history:

  • 1965 - The Soviet Union launches the Venera 3 space probe, which becomes the first spacecraft to reach the surface of another planet (Venus).

  • 1974 - First intentional interstellar radio message sent, Arecibo telescope towards M 41, a cluster of stars some 25,000 light years away.
  • 1982 - 5th Space Shuttle Mission-Columbia 5-lands at Edwards Air Force Base.
  • 1984 - 14th Shuttle Mission (51A) - Discovery 2 - lands at Kennedy Center.
  • 2004 - The European Space Agency probe, Smart 1, passes from Earth orbit into the orbit of the Moon.
  • 2006 - NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office observes two Leonid asteroids hit the Moon, making 11 confirmed impacts in one year.
  • 2020 - SpaceX Dragon caspsule delivers four astronauts to the International Space Station.
  • 2021 - Russia draws international condemnation following an anti-satellite weapon test that creates a cloud of space debris, threatening the International Space Station.
  • 2022 - NASA launches the unmanned Space Launch System, destined for the Moon.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2007 - 4,000 people are killed by flooding by Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh. Cost of damage totals US$2.3 billion.
  • 2020 - Hurricane Iota makes landfall in Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane, devastating the area.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Hessians capture Fort Washington, Manhattan.
  • 1798 - Kentucky becomes first state to nullify an act of US Congress.
  • 1841 - N.E. Guerin of New York patents cork-filled life preserver.
  • 1864 - USA General William T Sherman begins march to the sea.
  • 1896 - Electricity is first transmitted between a power plant (in Niagara Falls) and a city (Buffalo, New York).
  • 1903 - Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty creates Canal Zone, gives US exclusive canal rights in Panama.
  • 1907 - Oklahoma becomes 46th US state.
  • 1914 - Banks of the US Federal Reserve System open for business, in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, Saint Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco. The New York branch receives $100 million from member banks.

  • 1959 - The Sound of Music opens on Broadway.
  • 1973 - US President Richard Nixon authorizes construction of the Alaskan pipeline.
  • 1982 - 5th Space Shuttle Mission-Columbia 5-lands at Edwards Air Force Base.
  • 1983 - A jury in Gretna, Louisiana acquits Ginny Foat of the murder of Argentine businessman Moses Chaiyo.
  • 1983 - In Hawaii, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake occurs.
  • 1984 - 14th Shuttle Mission (51A) - Discovery 2 - lands at Kennedy Center.
  • 1988 - Robin Givens sues Mike Tyson for US$125 million for libel.
  • 1990 - Manuel Noriega claims US denied him a fair trial.
  • 1994 - A Federal judge issues a temporary restraining order, prohibiting the State of California from implementing Proposition 187, that would have denied most public services to illegal aliens.

  • 2000 - Bill Clinton becomes the first sitting U.S. President to visit Vietnam.
  • 2008 - Iraqi cabinet approves a withdrawal agreement for American troops to leave Iraqi cities and towns by the end of June 2009, and the country by the end of 2011.
