Personal computer history:

  • 1989 - COMDEX is held in Las Vegas, Nevada, over five days.
  • 1989 - At the fall COMDEX show, IBM strongly endorses Microsoft Windows for low end PCs, and Microsoft publicly endorses OS/2 as the future platform for higher-end PCs. IBM and Microsoft agree to jointly develop a consistent, full-range of systems software.
  • 1989 - IBM and Microsoft issue a joint statement that Microsoft would hold back features for Windows to help industry acceptance of OS/2.
  • 1994 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character writes "Beat up Martin." on a "Newton" handheld computer (with green apple and worm logo), which interprets the writing as "Eat up Martha.".
  • 1995 - In Las Vegas, Nevada, the Comdex Fall '95 conference is held, over five days. 1950 exhibitors and 207,000 visitors attend.
  • 1996 - Advanced Micro Devices begins limited shipments of its K6 processor with MMX instructions, at speeds of 166 to 200 MHz.
  • 1998 - Be announces BeOS Release 4 operating system, for Intel and PowerPC processor-based computers. The new release is better integrated with Windows files amd keyboard shortcuts. Release is set for December, with online purchase price US$69.95, or retail price US$99.95.
  • 2000 - Intel releases the 733 and 766 MHz Celeron processors. Prices are US$112 and US$170 each in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2001 - Palm buys Be's assets for $11 million in stock.
  • 2007 - Electronic Arts releases the Crysis game for personal computers in the USA.
  • 2008 - Blizzard releases the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King game for personal computers.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1940 - RKO Radio Pictures world premieres Disney's third animated feature film, Fantasia, at New York's Broadway Theater. The film introduces stereophonic sound to motion pictures via a special sound system called Fantasound. The film cost US$2.28 million to make. This is Mickey Mouse' feature film debut, in the segment The Sorcerer's Apprentice. This 10.5 minute segment alone cost US$125,000 to make.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled To the South Pole for Science.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the seventh "Elfego Baca" episode, Move Along, Mustangers.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled Donald's Silver Anniversary.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Ranger's Guide to Nature.
  • 1978 - A special Amtrak train carrying Mickey Mouse and Ward Kimball leaves Los Angeles for a five-day trip to New York.
  • 1984 - The CBS TV network airs the one-hour live-action show Donald Duck's 50th Birthday.
  • 1988 - The NBC TV network airs the special Mickey's 60th Birthday, featuring John Ritter and Carl Reiner.
  • 1991 - The animated feature film Beauty and the Beast premieres in theaters in New York City.
  • 1994 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A hockey team has the name "Mighty Pigs", with pig logo in style similar to Disney's The Mighty Ducks hockey team.
  • 1997 - The Lion King musical play opens at the New Amsterdam theater in New York.
  • 1998 - Azerbaijan issues ten postage stamps for the World Rapid Chess Championship, depicting Disney characters Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, and Pluto.
  • 1999 - The El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, California, hosts the premiere of the film Toy Story 2.
  • 2000 - Disney premieres the live-action feature film 102 Dalmatians in New York City.
  • 2007 - The ABC TV network airs the final Cavemen episode.
  • 2009 - Space Mountain at Walt Disney World re-opens after seven months renovations, for a few hours per day for fine tuning.
  • 2013 - The live musical play Aladdin opens at the Ed Mirvish Theater in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2021 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, USA, the Motul Petit Le Mans race is held, round 12 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 5th in GT Le Mans class and 32nd overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C8.R driven by Alexander Sims, Tommy Milner, and Nick Tandy.
    • Finishing 6th in GT Le Mans class and 36th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C8.R driven by Nicky Catsburg, Jordan Taylor, and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Finnish delegates return to Helsinki from Moscow after negotiations failed to satisfy Soviet demands for moving the border 30-40 miles and the lease of the Hanko Peninsula for a naval base to protect the Gulf of Finland.
  • 1939 - Britain resumes aerial leaflet drops over Germany.
  • 1940 - Soviet premier and foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov concludes a meeting with Adolf Hitler in Berlin. Hitler proposes Russia join the Tripartite Pact. Molotov says it could be possible, with careful definition of the Pact.
  • 1941 - A directive is given to Bomber Command to begin a period of conservative bombing raids, to build up strength for a more effective offensive in the following spring.
  • 1941 - (1538 hours) In the Mediterranean, German submarine U-81 fires three torpedoes at British aircraft carrier Ark Royal. One hits the ship below the superstructure, cutting off all communication from the bridge. One crewman dies in the blast.
  • 1941 - In Canada, the M-1000 Committee for researching biological warfare discusses anthrax, plague, typhoid, and cholera as possible directions for offensive weapons. They even discuss the feasibility of dropping infected rats with parachutes on enemy territory.
  • 1942 - In North Africa, the British 8th Army takes Tobruk.
  • 1942 - (about 1110 hours) US light cruiser USS Juneau is torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-26 off Guadalcanal with the loss of about 600. About 100 survivors are left behind by other US ships fearing further submarine attacks.
  • 1943 - A German guided aerial bomb hits HMS Dulverton off Kos, forcing the scuttling of the destroyer.
  • 1995 - Barbuda issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Scott Safran of Pennsylvania scores a world record 41,336,440 in Asteroids.
  • 1989 - US District Court Judge Fern Smith rules Nintendo owned rights to Tetris, not Tengen (Atari Games).
  • 2001 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Solid 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2003 - Sony drops the price of the PlayStation 2 in Japan to 19,800 yen (about US$180).
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character plays a handheld video game system.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Yoshi's Island DS video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2011 - Nintendo releases the Super Mario 3D Land video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the US.
  • 2012 - Activision releases the Call of Duty: Black Ops III video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Swedish history:

  • 1994 - A country-wide referendum is held to decide if Sweden should join the European Union. 52.2% vote yes, 46.9% vote no.

USA coin history:

  • 1861 - Baptist minister Mark R. Watkinson of Ridleyville, Pennsylvania, writes a letter to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase asking for the "recognition of the Almighty God in some form on our coins", proposing "God, Liberty, Law".
  • 1912 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1912-dated half dollars.
  • 1974 - US Mint Director Mary Brooks presents President Gerald Ford with a specimen set of Bicentennial coins.
  • 1997 - The House of Representatives passes a bill approving a 50-coin 50-State circulating quarter dollar program, a new circulating dollar coin, and non-circulating First Flight Centennial commemorative coins ($10 gold, $1 silver, half-dollar copper-nickel.
  • 2008 - The US Mint releases the 2008 Martin Van Buren Presidential dollar coin to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1875 - Harvard-Yale game is first college football contest with uniforms.
  • 1875 - National Bowling Association organizes in New York City.
  • 1900 - Baltimore Orioles enter baseball's American League.
  • 1909 - Ben Simpson of Hamilton Tigers kicks nine singles in a game.
  • 1954 - Great Britain defeats France to capture the first ever Rugby League World Cup in Paris in front of around 30,000 spectators.
  • 1964 - Bob Petit (Saint Louis Hawks) becomes first NBA player to score 20,000 points.
  • 1973 - Oakland Athletics' Reggie Jackson wins American League Most Valuable Player unanimously.
  • 1977 - 25th New York Islanders' shut-out Resch 6-0 Gilles scores on 5th penalty shot.
  • 1979 - For the first time in major league history two players are named co-winners of National League MVP award as Saint Louis Cardinals' first baseman Keith Hernandez shares the honor with outfielder Pittsburgh Pirates' Willie Stargell.
  • 1982 - Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim fatally injured when knocked out by Ray Mancini.
  • 1985 - Dwight Gooden, youngest 20-game winner in Major League Baseball, wins Cy Young award.
  • 1998 - The ball hit by Babe Ruth for his first home run hit in Yankee Stadium is sold at an auction for US126,500.
  • 2006 - Delmon Young is suspended for 50 games by the International League for throwing a bat which hit a replacement umpire in the chest.
  • 2006 - The New York Mets stage a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of the US$800 million 45,000-seat CitiField ballpark.
  • 2006 - The BBWAA votes Jason Verlander of the Detroit Tigers as American League Rookie of the Year Award.

  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Minnesota Wild beats Seattle Kraken by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Vancouver Canucks by score 7-4.
  • 2021 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats San Jose Sharks by score 6-2.
  • 2021 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL regular season game: Dallas Stars beats Philadelphia Flyers by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: Nashville Predators beats Arizona Coyotes by score 4-1.

  • 1775 - American Revolutionary forces capture Montreal.
  • 1789 - George Washington, inaugurated as the first president of the United States in April, returns to Washington at the end of his first presidential tour.
  • 1839 - First US anti-slavery party, Liberty Party, convenes in New York.
  • 1843 - Mount Rainier in Washington State erupts.
  • 1849 - Peter Burnett elected first governor of California.
  • 1854 - New Era ship sinks off New Jersey coast with loss of 300.
  • 1865 - PT Barnum's New American museum opens in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
  • 1865 - US issues first gold certificates.
  • 1868 - American Philological Association organizes in New York.
  • 1894 - US Treasury sells second issue of $50 million in bonds to restore gold reserve.

  • 1965 - Cruise ship Yarmouth Castle, on an overnight cruise from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas, burns and sinks off Bahamas, killing 87 of 545 passengers and crew. A fire broke out in an unoccupied cabin used for storage, quickly destroying the bridge, radio room, and some lifeboats.
  • 1969 - US Vice President Spiro T Agnew accuses network TV news depths of bias and distortion.
