Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - A New York Federal Court judge issues a temporary injunction against Commodore International, preventing the company from making and selling joysticks that are immitations of Atari joysticks.
  • 1991 - WordPerfect releases WordPerfect for Windows.
  • 1993 - Microsoft ships Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
  • 1998 - Intel begins airing a commercial on American television entitled "Homer's Smarter Brain", featuring Homer Simpson of The Simpsons, who has his brain replaced by a Pentium II processor, turning him into a professor.
  • 2000 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. Several personal computers appear.
  • 2004 - The Computer & Communications Industry Association settles a lawsuit with Microsoft, receiving about US$12 million.
  • 2004 - Microsoft agrees to pay US$536 million to Novell to settle legal claims related to Novell's NetWare operating system.
  • 2004 - Sony Online Entertainment releases the EverQuest II online game for personal computers.
  • 2005 - Tunisia issues a postage stamp depicting a computer monitor and keyboard.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1964 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring One Day at Teton Marsh. The film is based on the book by Sally Carrighar.
  • 1964 - The name of the Circarama theater in Disneyland is changed to Circle-Vision.
  • 1970 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Snow Bear, part two.
  • 1973 - Buena Vista releases the animated feature film Robin Hood to theaters.
  • 1974 - The National Broadcasting Company airs The Rockford Files TV show in the USA. A character refers to a police badge as "one of those things they hand out at Disneyland".
  • 1980 - The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride officially opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. It cost US$17 million to build.
  • 1993 - The Wall Street Journal newspaper reports that Disney is planning a theme park in Virginia.
  • 1993 - Antigua & Barbuda issues eleven postage stamps depicting Disney characters in Mickey's Nutcracker.
  • 1994 - Laurenfilm S.A. releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in Spain.
  • 1997 - At the Grand Floridian Resort in Walt Disney World, the Flagler's restaurant is replaced by Cítricos restaurant.
  • 1998 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • The title "When You Dish Upon A Star" is a reference to the Disney song "When You Wish Upon A Star" from the film Pinocchio.
    • A character says to Ron Howard "I loved Splash Mr. Howard!".
    • A sign at the headquarters of 20th Century Fox says "A DIVISION OF WALT DISNEY Co.".

  • 2005 - Austria issues a postage stamp depicting the opening of the Disney film The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1982 - The Columbia Broadcasting System airs the Cagney and Lacey TV show in the USA. An orange (1979 model?) Corvette appears.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - (2010 hours) The annual "Old Fighters" convention meets in Bürgerbräukeller in Munich, Germany. Adolf Hitler speaks for about an hour, accusing Great Britain of fighting for her own imperialist motives.
  • 1939 - (2120 hours) In Munich, Germany, a bomb explodes in Bürgerbräukeller, fifteen minutes after Adolf Hitler left the building. Eight are killed, sixty-three injured. George Elser set the bomb in a gap under a wood panel, possibly arranged by Heinrich Himmler.
  • 1942 - (0704 hours) North of Casablanca, US battleship Massachussetts battles with two French heavy cruisers, battleship Jean Bart, and coastal batteries.
  • 1942 - Operation Torch begins, as Allied forces land in Northern Africa. The Western Task Force with 24,500 Americans under Major General George Patton land at Fedala (15 miles north of Casablanca), Mehdia (55 miles south of Casablanca), and Safi (140 miles south of Casablanca). The Center Task Force with 18,500 Americans under Major General Lloyd Fredenall land near Oran. The Eastern Task Force with 9000 British and 9000 Americans and 2000 British Commandos under American Major General Charles Ryder land at Algiers.
  • 1943 - Adolf Hitler broadcasts a speech from a beer hall in Munich: "our hour of revenge is nigh!", refering to flying bomb and rocket weapons nearing a state of readiness.
  • 1943 - American submarine USS Nautilus departs Pearl Harbor with a US Marine detachment, to land at Abemama Island.
  • 1944 - Allied forces secure the entire island of Walcheren.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command launches a third raid on Homberg.
  • 1944 - In Canada, Prime Minister William King makes a national appeal on radio to soldiers to volunteer for overseas duty. Public reaction is negative.
  • 1982 - Greece issues eight postage stamps depicting the national resistance movement, 1941-44.
  • 1991 - Canada issues four postage stamps depicting Canada's contribution to World War II in 1941.
  • 1993 - Canada issues four postage stamps depicting Canada's contribution to World War II in 1943.

Video game history:

  • 1982 - Milton Bradley introduces the Vectrex, the first home gaming system with a built-in 9-inch monochrome vector monitor. It uses a Motorola 68A09 processor. Price: US$199. The system includes the built-in game Mine Storm.
  • 1992 - Sega of America releases the Sega CD Multimedia Entertainment System, with a CD player, for US$299. The unit is an add-on product for the Genesis system. It features MC68000 processor, two music CDs, and 2 game discs, including Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective, Columns, Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Super Monaco GP1.
  • 2002 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Mario Tennis video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2004 - EA releases The Urbz: Sims in the City video game for the GameCube, Game Boy Advance, PlayStation 2, and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Castlevania: Curse of Darkness video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Sony CE Europe releases the EyeToy: Kinetic video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Mutant Nightmare video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2005 - Capcom releases the Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Activision releases the Gun video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Red Octane releases the Guitar Hero video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Karaoke Revolution Party video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2006 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy V Advance video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1520 - Followers of Sten Sture are tried in an ecclesiastic court presided over by the Archbishop, in the presence of the King. All are found guilty of heresy. Bishop Mattias of Strängnäs is beheaded first, then Bishop Vincentius of Skara. A total of 82 men are put to death over three hours. This becomes known as the Stockholm Bloodbath. Orders are sent to Finland for execution of Hemming Gadh. Kristina Gyllerstierna and Anna Bielke are taken as prisoners to Denmark.
  • 1542 - An Linköping, a formal armistice is reached between the King and Nils Dacke. The King uses the truce as an opportunity to build up forces for a renewed offensive.
  • 1917 - Bolsheviks take power in Russia.
  • 1996 - In Zürich, Switzerland, a Swedish 1885 yellow 3 Skilling Banco stamp sells for a world record $2.3 million.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1911 - Designs of the $5 and $10 coins, created by W.H.J. Blakemore, are approved for use.
  • 1962 - The Government passes an Order-in-Council changing the shape of the nickel from 12-sided back to round.

USA coin history:

  • 1836 - The Philadelphia Mint begins striking coins for circulation using steam-powered presses; first coin is the 1836 Capped Bust, Reeded Edge half dollar. Results are considered unsatisfactory.
  • 2004 - Heritage Numismatic Auctions sells a US 50-cent coin, 1919-D MS-66 for US$270,250.
  • 2007 - Representative Ron Paul of Texas introduces H.R. 4127 "Make No Cents Until It Makes Sense Act" in the House of Representatives, seeking suspension of production of 1-cent coins until the Treasury Secretary and Federal Reserve Chairman certify there is no surplus.

Sports history:

  • 1954 - American League approves Philadelphia Athletics' move to Kansas City.
  • 1966 - US President Lyndon Johnson signs anti-trust immunity to AFL-NFL merger.
  • 1970 - Tom Dempsey of New Orleans Saints kicks NFL record 63-yard field goal.
  • 2009 - In Valencia, Spain, round 17 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Dani Pedrosa.
  • 2009 - The FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Valentino Rossi.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: Los Angeles Kings beats Toronto Maple Leafs by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: Washington Capitals beats Buffalo Sabres by score 5-3.
  • 2021 - At Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats Florida Panthers by score 4-3.

Space exploration history:

  • 1980 - Voyager 1 space probe discovers 15th moon of Saturn.
  • 1984 - STS 51-A mission launched. Anna Fisher becomes the first "mom" to go into orbit.
  • 2006 - A transit of Mercury occurs.
  • 2008 - India's Chandrayaan 1 spacecraft enters orbit of the Moon, the first Indian satellite to reach the Moon.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2013 - Typhoon Haiyan ("Yolanda") hits the Philippines and Vietnam, causing devastation with at least 6,241 dead.

USA history:

  • 1789 - Bourbon whiskey is first distilled from corn (by Elijah Craig, Bourbon, Kentucky).
  • 1805 - The Lewis and Clark expedition arrives at the Pacific Ocean, the first European explorers to do so by an overland route from the east.
  • 1837 - Mount Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts opens as the first US college founded for women.
  • 1861 - Captain Charles Wilkes of American steam-sloop San Jacinto fires shot across bow of British vessel Trent, stops it on high seas, takes four passengers off, two of them CSA envoys to France (Mason) and Great Britain (Slidell). They are taken to Fort Warren in Boston as prisoners.
  • 1864 - Abraham Lincoln elected to his second term as US President.
  • 1870 - Democratic governor elected in Tennessee.
  • 1889 - Montana is admitted as 41st state of the USA.
  • 1892 - Grover Cleveland (Democrat) is elected President of the USA.
  • 1904 - US President Theodore Roosevelt (Republican) defeats Alton B Parker (Democrat).
  • 1910 - First Washington State election in which women could vote.
  • 1931 - The Panama Canal is closed for a couple of weeks due to damage caused by a number of earthquakes.
  • 1932 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Democrat) elected President of US.
  • 1933 - US President Franklin Roosevelt creates the Civil Works Administration.
  • 1938 - In US elections, Republicans makes gains of 8 seats in Senate, 80 in the House of Representatives, and 11 State Governors.

  • 1980 - In Gorda Plate, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurs. Most of the damage occurred east of Fields Landing, where two sections of an overpass on U.S. Highway 101 collapsed onto the railroad tracks below.
  • 1982 - In Wethersfield, Connecticut, USA a falling meteorite pierces the roof of a house.
  • 1984 - STS 51-A mission launched. Anna Fisher becomes the first "mom" to go into orbit.
  • 1988 - George Bush (Republican) beats Mike Dukakis (Democrat) for American Presidency.
  • 1990 - 100,000 additional US troops are sent to the Persian Gulf.
  • 1994 - Georgia Representative Newt Gingrich leads the United States Republican Party in taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in midterm congressional elections. This is the first time in 40 years that the Republicans secure control of both houses of Congress. George W. Bush is elected Governor of Texas.
  • 2004 - Heritage Numismatic Auctions sells a US 50-cent coin, 1919-D MS-66 for US$270,250.
  • 2006 - U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld resigns; President Bush nominates Robert Gates, a former Central Intelligence Agency director, as his replacement.
  • 2018 - The Camp Fire ignites in Butte County, California.
  • 2022 - In the USA, the Powerball lottery is won, $2.04 billion.

Other history:

  • 1956 - UN demands USSR leave Hungary.
  • 1966 - Movie actor Ronald Reagan elected governor of California, USA.
  • 2008 - New Zealand's opposition National Party ends Prime Minister Helen Clark's nine-year Labour government, winning 45 percent to 34. The United Future and ACT parties will join the National Party to form the next government.
