Personal computer history:

  • 1980 - Microsoft and IBM sign a formal contract for Microsoft to develop certain software products for IBM's new microcomputer. Microsoft will receive US$200,000 to adapt the operating system to the IBM PC, and US$500,000 for DOS, BASIC, and compilers. Microsoft is to have an initial version of the operating system and BASIC working by mid-January.
  • 2006 - YTV airs the TV show Weird Years in Canada. The game "WarQuest" is played on a personal computer, a play on game titles Warcraft and EverQuest.
  • 2007 - Netherlands issues a 44-cent + 22-cent postage stamp depicting a child and a computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1942 - The Donald Duck film Sky Trooper is released to theaters.
  • 1956 - Disney releases the animated short film A Cowboy Needs a Horse to theaters.
  • 1956 - Disney releases the live-action short film Cow Dog to theaters.
  • 1956 - Buena Vista releases Disney's True-Life Adventure film Secrets of Life to theaters in the US.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Adventures in Fantasy.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled Perilous Assignment, including portions of the film Third Man on the Mountain.
  • 1960 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the Zorro episode Adios El Cuchillo.
  • 1987 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Hello Again to theaters in the US.
  • 1996 - The Disney Channel begins airing the show Waging Peace.
  • 1998 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Waterboy to theaters in the USA.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Snake Eyes to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 2001 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. While trying to catch a leprechaun, a pixie drawn like Tinkerbell is also caught.
  • 2002 - Disney asks a court to invalidate a 72-year-old agreement between A.A. Milne and Stephen Slesinger, which gives the US rights to the Winnie-the-Pooh characters to the heirs of Slesinger. Disney claims to have a new agreement with Milne's granddaughter for the rights.
  • 2007 - Disney releases the Disney-Pixar film Ratatouille on DVD in the USA.
  • 2009 - Disney generally releases the film Disney's A Christmas Carol in theaters in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - The body of Corvette show car #852 is burned in tests.

World War II history:

  • 1937 - Italy signs the Anti-Cominterm Pact, joining Germany and Japan.
  • 1939 - Australia agrees for its five destroyers at Singapore to be moved to the Mediterranean, to release British destroyers for anti-submarine work in the Atlantic. In return, two British cruisers would be sent to Australia as protection against armed raiders.
  • 1940 - Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Ottawa and Royal Navy destroyer Harvester sink Italian submarine Faa di Bruno off Ireland.
  • 1941 - Josef Stalin makes a public speech in Moscow, lamenting a second front in Europe, claiming to be fighting a war of liberation single-handedly.
  • 1942 - Soviet forces at Ordzhonikidze counterattack with infantry and T-34 tanks against the overextended 13th Panzer Division, 23rd Panzer Division, and Romanian 2nd Mountain Division.
  • 1942 - Heavy rains in North Africa put an end to the British 8th Army chase of Erwin Rommel's forces.
  • 1943 - Kiev is liberated by Soviet forces.
  • 1944 - Middelburg, capital of Walcheren island, is freed from German occupation.
  • 1944 - 731 British bombers attack the Nordstern oil plant near Gelsenkirchen, Germany, causing great damage. Five bombers are shot down.
  • 1964 - The USSR proclaims Richard Sorge posthumously a Hero of the Soviet Union. Sorge headed a Soviet spy ring in Tokyo until his capture in October 1941.

Video game history:

  • 2000 - Nintendo releases the Hey You, Pikachu! video game for the Nintendo 64 in the US.
  • 2001 - The first issue of Official Xbox Magazine is published in the US.
  • 2003 - EA Games releases The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King video game for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, and Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2006 - YTV airs the TV show Weird Years in Canada.
    • In a dream, a kid meets Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider video games.
    • To cross a river, he jumps across logs like in game Frogger.
    • In a zoo, a gorilla throws barrels like in Donkey Kong.
    • A turtle is jumped on (100 points) and kicked (200 points) like in Super Mario Bros..

  • 2007 - Square Enix releases the Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2008 - Ubisoft releases the End War video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2012 - Microsoft Game Studios releases the Halo 4 video game for the Xbox 360.

Swedish history:

  • 1520 - Festivities are held in Stockholm Castle for King Kristian.
  • 1632 - Armies of King Gustav Adolf and Imperial general Albrecht von Wallenstein meet in battle at Lützen. King Gustav is shot three times in a cavalry engagement early in the battle, and dies. Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar takes over command, and wins the battle. One-third (about 4500) of the Swedish-Finnish army is killed.
  • 1663 - The first Swedish flag law is enacted, authorizing Swedish trading ships to fly yellow and blue flags.
  • 1981 - Swedish Navy ships tow a Soviet submarine to outside Sweden's 12-mile limit. Soviet officials maintain that the sub strayed off course due to fog and navigational equipment failure. Radiation is detected outside the forward section, indicating the likely presense of nuclear torpedoes.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1986 - Ace Courier Services informs Royal Canadian Mint authorities that the delivery of the master die packages has been delayed due to a severe snow storm.

USA coin history:

  • 1885 - US mint at Carson City, Nevada directed to close.
  • 2006 - The US Mint releases the 2006 South Dakota State quarter dollar coin to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1869 - First intercollegiate American football game is played in New Brunswick, New Jersey (Rutgers College 6, Princeton University 4).
  • 1883 - NYAC organizes first American cross-country championship race.
  • 1956 - Holland and Spain withdraw from Olympics, protest Soviets in Hungary.
  • 1969 - First baseball Cy Young Award tie (Mike Cuellar of the Baltimore Orioles, and Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers).
  • 1979 - At Montevideo, Uruguay, the International Olympic Committee adopts a resolution, whereby Taiwan Olympic and sports teams will participate with the name Chinese Taipei in future Olympics Games and international sports tournaments and championships.
  • 1988 - Japan and Major League Baseball All-Stars play to a 6-6 draw (Game 2 of 7).
  • 1988 - Steve Jones wins New York men's marathon; Grete Waitz 9th women's title.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: New Jersey Devils beats San Jose Sharks by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, USA, NHL regular season game: Arizona Coyotes beats Seattle Kraken by score 5-4.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Saddledrome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats New York Rangers by score 6-0.
  • 2021 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: New York Islanders beats Winnipeg Jets by score 2-0.
  • 2021 - At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL regular season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats Colorado Avalanche by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: Philadelphia Flyers beats Washington Capitals by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Minnisota Wild beats Pittsburgh Penguins by score 5-4.
  • 2021 - At Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, NHL regular season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Montreal Canadiens by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Boston Bruins by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, USA, NHL regular season game: Detroit Red Wings beats Buffalo Sabres by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Florida Panthers beats Carolina Hurricanes by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Ottawa Senators by score 5-3.

Space exploration history:

  • 1967 - US launches Surveyor 6; makes soft landing on Moon November 9.
  • 1985 - 22nd Space Shuttle Mission (61A) -Challenger 9- lands at Edwards Air Force Base.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2005 - A tornado hits western Kentucky and southwestern Indiana, killing at least 22.

USA history:

  • 1850 - Yerba Buena and Angel Islands (San Francisco Bay) are reserved for military use.
  • 1862 - New York-San Francisco direct telegraphic link established.
  • 1885 - US mint at Carson City, Nevada is directed to close.
  • 1888 - Benjamin Harrison (Republican-Senator-Indiana) beats President Grover Cleveland (Democrat), 233 electoral votes to 168, Cleveland received slightly more votes.
  • 1900 - US President William McKinley (Republican) re-elected, beating William Jennings Bryan.
  • 1903 - The USA recognizes the independence of Panama.
  • 1906 - Charles Evans Hughes (Republican) is elected New York governor, beating William Randolph Hearst.
  • 1928 - Herbert Hoover (Republican) beats Alfred E Smith (Democrat) for US President.
  • 1935 - Before the New York section of the Institute of Radio Engineers, Edwin Armstrong presents his paper, "A Method of Reducing Disturbances in Radio Signaling by a System of Frequency Modulation" (i.e. FM radio).
  • 1939 - General Electric's WGY-TV (Schenectady, New York), first commercial TV station, begins service.
  • 1944 - Plutonium is first produced at the Hanford Atomic Facility in the USA, subsequently used in the Fat Man Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.
  • 1945 - The House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigation of seven radio commentators.
  • 1956 - US President Dwight Eisenhower (Republican) re-elected defeating Adlai E Stevenson (Democrat).
  • 1962 - Edward M Kennedy first elected (Senator-Democrat-Massachusetts).
  • 1962 - Edward W Brooke (Republican) is elected attorney general of Massachusetts.
  • 1966 - NBC is first network to televise its entire lineup in color.
  • 1967 - US launches Surveyor 6; makes soft landing on Moon November 9.
  • 1971 - The United States Atomic Energy Commission tests the largest U.S. underground hydrogen bomb, code-named Cannikin, on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians.
  • 1976 - Benjamin Hooks succeeds Roy Wilkins as executive director of NAACP.
  • 1977 - 39 killed in an earthen dam burst at Toccoa Falls Bible College, Georgia.
  • 1984 - U.S. presidential election: Ronald Reagan defeats Walter F. Mondale with 59 percent of the popular vote, the highest since Richard Nixon's 61 percent victory in 1972. Reagan carries 49 states in the electoral college; Mondale wins only his home state of Minnesota by a mere 3,761 vote margin, and the District of Columbia.
  • 1984 - In the USA, voters approve introduction of state lotteries in California, Oregon, Missouri, and West Virginia. Pari-mutuel racing betting is approved in Missouri. Colorado and Arkansas defeat proposed casino introductions. Oregon votes to amend constitution to prohibit casinos.
  • 1985 - Exploratory well at Ranger, Texas, explodes spilling 6.3 million gallons of oil.
  • 1986 - US President Ronald Reagan signs landmark immigration reform bill.
  • 2002 - The U.S. Federal Reserve System drops its primary discount rate by 50 basis points to 0.75 percent, putting the real interest rate solidly below the inflation rate.
  • 2005 - A tornado hits western Kentucky and southwestern Indiana, killing at least 22.
  • 2009 - A US Army major opens fire on fellow soldiers at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, killing 13 people and injuring 30.

  • 1572 - A supernova is observed in the constellation known as Cassiopeia.
  • 1813 - Chilpancingo congress declares Mexico independent of Spain.
  • 1844 - Spain grants Dominican Republic independence.
  • 1917 - Bolshevik revolution begins in Russia with the capture of the Winter Palace.
  • 1923 - USSR adopts experimental calendar, with 5-day "weeks".
  • 1952 - First hydrogen bomb exploded (by US at Eniwetok Atoll).
  • 1984 - US President Ronald Reagan landslide (won 49 states) re-election over Walter Mondale.
