- 1981 - Jack Tramiel resigns as president of Commodore International, but remains as chief executive officer. James Finke becomes new president and chief operating officer.
- 1981 - Microsoft and Seattle Computer Products sign a licensing agreement giving Microsoft a non-exclusive right to market 86-DOS. SCP receives US$10,000 for signing, US$10,000 per sublicense through Microsoft, and US$5,000 if source code is part of the sublicense.
- 1984 - In Tokyo, Japan, Hitachi announces it has developed the world's first memory chip with the capacity of 1 megabit.
- 1984 - The International Winter Consumer Electronics Show is held, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
- 1984 - At the Winter CES, Coleco Industries announces a disk drive for the Adam computer.
- 1993 - MacWorld Exposition '93 is held, in San Francisco, California.
- 1995 - In Las Vegas, Nevada, the Winter Consumer Electronics Show is held, over four days. Microsoft's Bill Gates unveils Microsoft Bob, an application for Windows consumer users, with a "social interface". The code name for the project was "Utopia".
- 1999 - At the Macworld Expo, Connectix releases the Virtual Game Station software for the Apple Macintosh computer, allowing users to play Sony PlayStation video games on their computers. Price is US$49.
- 2000 - At the Consumer Electronics Show, Advanced Micro Devices, KryoTech, and Compaq Computer demonstrate a specially-cooled 1 GHz Athlon processor running in a Compaq computer.
- 2000 - At the Consumer Electronics Show, Advanced Micro Devices releases the 800 MHz Athlon processor.
- 2003 - In San Francisco, California, the Macworld Conference and Expo is held, over five days.
- 1939 - Disney publishes the first issue of The Bulletin, a studio employee newsletter.
- 1950 - The Pluto film Pluto's Heart Throb is released. Butch and Dinah also appear.
- 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Three Tall Tales, with Ludwig von Drake. Films shown are Casey at the Bat, Paul Bunyan, and Windwagon Smith.
- 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring The Whiz Kid and the Mystery at Riverton, part one.
- 1985 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film Black Arrow.
- 1988 - The CBS TV network airs the last episode of The Oldest Rookie show.
- 1993 - Disney releases the film Honey, I Blew Up the Kid on laserdisc for US$40. Included is the short film Off His Rockers.
- 1994 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character spray paints "Carpe Diem" on a wall, similar to a scene in the film Dead Poets Society.
- 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Houseguest to theaters in the USA.
- 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
- A character refers to "the magic of Disney Animatronics".
- A robotic human in a chair stands and speaks, a reference to the Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln attraction.
- 1990 - At the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan, the North American International Automobile Show is held, over nine days. General Motors debuts the CERV III (No. 3). The car's mid-engine V-8 is a 5.7-litre 32-valve, dual-overhead cam LT5, with twin turbos, intercooler, aluminum block and cylinder heads, giving it 650-hp and a top speed of 225-MPH. The car also features active suspension, four-wheel steering, and a body made of carbon fiber, Kevlar, Nomex, and aluminum honeycomb.
- 1990 - In Los Angeles, California, the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show is held, over nine days. Larry Shinoda, Rick Mears, and Jim Williams introduce the Rick Mears Special Edition Series package of ground effects accessories for 1984-90 Corvettes.
- 1992 - In Detroit, Michigan, the 1992 North American International Auto Show is held. Chevrolet debuts the Sting Ray III show car, a styling preview being considered for the next generation Corvette.
- 1997 - In Detroit, Michigan, the North American International Auto Show is held, over ten days. Chevrolet unveils the 1997 Corvette, dubbed "C5". A new small-block V-8 engine is introduced, the LS1, with 345-hp, and 10:1 compression ratio.
- 1940 - Finnish pilot Jorma Sarvanto shoots down six of seven attacking Russian DB-3F bombers.
- 1940 - Russian commander General Vinogradov of the 44th Division in Finland authorizes his troops to escape back to Soviet territory.
- 1941 - American President Franklin Roosevelt makes his annual address to Congress. He says the country should support those nations resisting aggression, to keep war from this Hemisphere, to increase manufacture of war supplies and loan to nations in need of them. Roosevelt says the world should be founded on four freedoms: speech and expression, to worship God in his own way, economic health, and reductions in arms, so that no nation can threaten any neighbor.
- 1992 - Uganda issues ten postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, and the Battle of Midway.
- 1999 - At the Macworld Expo, Connectix releases the Virtual Game Station software in the US for the Apple Macintosh computer, allowing users to play Sony PlayStation games on their computers. Price is US$49.
- 2001 - At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft unveils the Xbox video game system. It features 733 MHz processor, large hard drive, and 250 MHz graphics processor. Target release date is October.
- 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the US. A "what if" scenario is shown: "what if life were more like a video game".
- The space ship in Asteroids shoots some asteroids, then lands in the main building.
- The president of the Earth signs peace with Ambassador Kong (Donkey Kong) of planet Nintendo 64.
- The Donkey Kong character throws barrels, climbs ladders, and the sounds of the Donkey Kong game can be heard.
- The Mario character also appears, as the representative of Italy.
- A green wireframe tank from Battle Zone roams the street.
- Doors in a military building are labelled Missile Command, Secretary of Defender, and Moon Patrol.
- To enter the War Room, a message is displayed "You need the blue key", like in games like Doom.
- Monitors in the War Room show Centipede playing.
- The main general is Pac-Man.
- One sequence takes place on a full-screen Pac-Man board, complete with ghosts pellets and power pills.
- The group of people escape out of a Warp Pipe from Super Mario Bros..
- Above the city, a real game of Space Invaders takes place, with the familiar alien ships advancing left, right, and down.
- One of the main characters plays Space Invaders on an arcade machine, shooting the ships above the city.
- When General Pac-Man is killed, Ms. Pac-man mourns his loss. W
- hen the last space ship lands on Earth, out step Donkey Kong, an egg from Burger Time, Q*Bert, the main Robotron character and one of the brain people.
- A character says "All your base are belong to us", a reference to an English translation of the 1989 Japanese video game Zero Wing by Toaplan.
- 2004 - Sega releases the Sonic Heroes video game for the GameCube in the US.
- 1626 - Swedes defeat a Polish force at Wallhof.
- 2002 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. A character attempts to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry.
- 1998 - The A & W Concentrate Company is granted a registered trademark of an image of a barrel and text "Barrel Aged, Bold Taste!".
- 2000 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the designs for twelve year 2000 25c coins, depicting Canada's strengths for the future. A 12-coin silver set in Proof sells for $149.95. A set in nickel sells for $24.95.
- 2000 - The Royal Canadian Mint launches the January 25c nickel coin, entitled Pride, by Donald Warkentin. A silver version is available for $14.95.
- 1681 - First recorded boxing match (Duke of Albemarle's butler vs his butcher).
- 1864 - Birth of Ban Johnson Norwalk Connecticut, baseball founder (American League).
- 1883 - Ontario Rugby Football Union forms.
- 1891 - Birth of Ted McDonald cricketer (great Australian quick of 20's).
- 1896 - First US women's six-day bicycle race starts, Madison Square Garden.
- 1907 - Walter Read cricketer (English batsman, 117 at no 10 vs Australia 1884), dies.
- 1915 - Reginald Wood cricketer (one Test England vs Australia 1886), dies.
- 1920 - Birth of Early Wynn Hartford Alabama, baseball Hall of famer (pitcher).
