Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - Bill Gates decides to proceed with an initial public offering of Microsoft stock.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer unveils the MessagePad 2000 computer. It features 1 MB DRAM, 5 MB Flash RAM, 2 Type II PC Card slots, backlit 480x320 100 dpi display, size 4.7 x 8.3 inches, Newton OS 2.1, 1.4 pound weight, and 161.9 MHz StrongARM 110 RISC processor. It runs on four AA batteries.
  • 1996 - Microsoft and Intel announce plans to develop the NetPC specification.
  • 2002 - Palm introduces the Palm Tungsten T handheld computer. It features voice recorder, Bluetooth wireless support, 16 MB RAM, 3-inch diagonal 320x320 pixel 65,536-color TFT display, Secure Digital slot, USB docking cradle/charger, 175 MHz Texas Instruments OMAP1510 chip (ARM 925 processor), Palm OS 5.0, rechargeable lithium ion battery. Price is US$499; weight is 5.6 ounces; size is 4 x 3 x 0.6 inches.
  • 2002 - Palm unveils the Tungsten W handheld computer. It features built-in keyboard, General Packet Radio Service network, 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor, Palm OS 4.1.1, 320x320 screen. Price is US$549.
  • 2003 - Palm shareholders vote to merge with Handspring, with the new company to be called palmOne Worldwide, and to spin off PalmSource as a separate company.
  • 2008 - Electronic Arts releases the Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 computer game for Windows computers.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1923 - Virginia Davis' mother wires acceptance of Walt Disney's contract offer.
  • 1931 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Beach Party. Pluto and Clarabelle Cow also appear.
  • 1933 - The Mickey Mouse film The Pet Store is released to theaters. Minnie Mouse also appears.
  • 1949 - Kay Kamen, Disney's licensing representative for 17 years, dies in an Air France plane crash over the Azores.
  • 1962 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Sammy the Way-Out Seal, part one.
  • 1980 - Thirty former Mouseketeers take part in filming a TV special for the 25th anniversary of The Mickey Mouse Club show, including appearing on a parade float down Disneyland's Main Street.
  • 1992 - The ABC TV network airs the last Laurie Hill show.
  • 1993 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. One character appears as the devil, looking like the devil in the film Fantasia, with brief music similar to "Night on Bald Mountain".
  • 1994 - Disney releases The Making of Snow White on laserdisc.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Squanto: A Warrior's Tale to theaters.
  • 1997 - Disney launches its redesigned Disney.com Internet Web site, with new sections for parenting resources, and a kids area with games and stories with Disney characters.
  • 1998 - The animated film The Lion King II: Simba's Pride premieres in Westwood, California.
  • 2001 - Disney premieres the animated feature film Monsters, Inc. in Hollywood, California.
  • 2014 - USA Network premieres the ABC Signature TV series Benched.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1984 - At the Green Valley Raceway in Smith Field, Texas, the SCCA Budweiser Trans-Am Championship - Round 15 race is held.
    • Finishing 4th is the Brandt Racing #60 Corvette, driven by John Brandt.
    • Finishing 12th is the Maidrite Sandwich Shops #73 Corvette, driven by Ron Boelts.
    • Finishing 14th is the Sawatzky Construction/Performance Auto #33 Corvette, driven by Ken Sawatzky.
    • In 20th place, but not finishing the race, is the DeAtley Budweiser #3 Corvette, driven by Darin Brassfield.
    • In 21st place, but not finishing the race, is the DeAtley Budweiser #1 Corvette, driven by David Hobbs.

  • 1989 - The final 1989 SCCA Corvette Challenge race is run, in St. Petersburg, Florida at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix circuit. Finishing 1st is the Texas American Racing Team Corvette driven by Scott Lagasse. Bill Cooper of the Valley Chevrolet team wins the series.
  • 1989 - At the last Corvette Challenge race in St. Petersburg, Florida, Chip Miller buys the last one built, a black backup car, from John Powell. The car has 100 miles on the odometer.
  • 1994 - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer releases the film Stargate to theaters in the USA. A model of a red Corvette, possibly 1956 model, appears.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Adolf Hitler intervenes in war plans to change a limited operation into a strong focused drive to cut Belgium in two.
  • 1940 - Italian President Benito Mussolini sends Greek government: allow Italian forces to occupy Greece or face war.
  • 1940 - (0600 hours) Italy launches an attack on Greece from Albania.
  • 1940 - German submarine U32 torpedoes and sinks Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Britain in the Atlantic, en route from the Middle East to England.
  • 1944 - 277 British bombers attack German gun and troop positions on Walcheren island.
  • 1944 - 733 British bombers attack Cologne, Germany. 2239 blocks of housing and 15 industrial works are totally destroyed.
  • 1945 - Greece issues two postage stamps marking the 5th anniversary of the "No" vote to Italy's ultimatum of October 28, 1940.
  • 2007 - Official inauguration of Bergen-Belsen Documentation and Information Cenre in Germany, documenting the history and uses of facilities by Nazis and post-war.

Video game history:

  • 1981 - At the Exposition Center in Chicago, the Atari Coin-Op $50,000 World Championship is held, over five days. Participation is only 250 players, on expectations of 10-15,000. Eric Ginner wins $12,000 in Open Singles tournament playing Centipede. The check bounces, but Atari pays it to avoid bad publicity.
  • 1998 - SNK releases the NeoGeo Pocket handheld video game system in Japan. Price is about US$68.
  • 2003 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy XI video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2007 - Activision releases the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock video game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 2 in the USA.
  • 2008 - Bethesda Softworks releases the Fallout 3 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1320 - Magnus, son of former king Birger, is executed in Stockholm.
  • 1412 - Queen Margaret dies on a ship in Flensburg.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2010 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases the 2010 colorized Red Poppy plated-steel 25-cent coin to circulation, for the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. The design of two red poppies flanking a soldier was created by the mint's Master Engraver Cosme Saffioti. Weight 4.4 grams, diameter 23.88mm, mintage 11 million.

USA coin history:

  • 1795 - Elias Boudinot becomes director of the US Mint.
  • 1867 - (to November 2) Mssrs. Leavitt, Strebeigh & Co. conduct an auction of Eliot Woodward, his Tenth Semi-Annual Sale of American and Foreign Coins and Medals: The [Joseph J.] Mickley Collection. Sales of the 3382 lots total $13,285.70, including 28 complete proof sets 1827-1866, thirteen 1793 cents of which eight are uncirculated, a Birch cent, and a silver center pattern cent. An 1804 (Class I) silver dollar sells for $750 to William A. Lilliendahl, a record for a US coin at auction.
  • 1905 - The Denver Mint begins coining pieces, first with a commemorative token to mark the mint's official opening.

Sports history:

  • 1890 - Last National League-AA World Series game; Brooklyn ties Louisville three games and one tie.
  • 1900 - After over five months, the Paris Olympic Games close.
  • 1911 - Bill Dobbie of Calgary Tigers kicks ten singles in a game.
  • 1922 - First US coast-to-coast radio broadcast of a football game.
  • 1924 - Chicago White Sox beat New York Giants 8-4 in Dublin, less than 20 fans attend.
  • 1934 - Brooklyn Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates play a penalty free NFL game.
  • 1953 - Bud Grant of Winnipeg Blue Bombers intercepts five passes (record).
  • 1959 - Buffalo Bills enter the AFL.
  • 1961 - Ground broken for Municipal (Shea) Stadium for New York Mets.
  • 1962 - New York Giants' Y.A. Tittle passes for seven touchdowns versus Washington Redskins (49-34).
  • 1966 - Belgium's Gaston Roelants runs 12.8 miles in one hour.
  • 1970 - NBA Cleveland Cavaliers first home game, lose to San Diego Rockets 110-99.
  • 1973 - Elmore Smith of the Los Angeles Lakers blocks 17 shots in a game (NBA record).
  • 1974 - First time two New York Islanders hat tricks in same game-MacMillian and Westfall.
  • 1976 - Billy Martin named American League Manager of the Year (New York Yankees).
  • 1978 - Donald Ritchie runs the fastest 100km ever, doing it in 7.2722 seconds.
  • 1979 - Billy Martin is fired as New York Yankees' manager (second time), replaced by Dick Howser.
  • 1981 - The Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees 9-2, to capture the World Championship in six games.
  • 1989 - The Oakland Athletics sweep of the San Francisco Giants winning baseball's World Series.
  • 1995 - The Atlanta Braves defeat the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series.
  • 2007 - The Boston Red Sox win the 2007 World Series in a four-game sweep against the Colorado Rockies.
  • 2021 - At SAP Center in San Jose, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Montreal Canadiens beats San Jose Sharks by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Los Angeles Kings by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Seattle Kraken beats Minnesota Wild by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Buffalo Sabres beats Anaheim Ducks by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL regular season game: Philadelphia Flyers beats Vancouver Canucks by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At Enterprise Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats Saint Louis Blues by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Boston Bruins by score 3-0.
  • 2021 - At PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Pittsburgh Penguins by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Tampa Bay Lightning beats Arizona Coyotes by score 5-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1970 - US/USSR sign an agreement to discuss joint space efforts.
  • 1971 - England becomes sixth nation to have a satellite (Prospero) in orbit.
  • 1982 - NASA launches RCA-E.
  • 2009 - NASA launches a prototype Ares I-X rocket from Florida to test technology for the development of a future manned launch vehicle. The US$450 million launcher is the first NASA has built in more than 30 years.

USA history:

  • 1776 - Battle of White Plains; George Washington retreats to New Jersey.
  • 1790 - New York gives up claims to Vermont for $30,000.
  • 1795 - Elias Boudinot becomes director of the US Mint.
  • 1884 - Hugh McCulloch takes office as Treasury Secretary for the second time.
  • 1886 - The statue of Liberty Enlightening the World is dedicated by President Grover Cleveland in New York Harbor. It is celebrated by the first confetti (ticker tape) parade in New York City.
  • 1904 - Saint Louis, Missouri, USA police try a new investigation method: fingerprints.
  • 1914 - Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is founded at Howard University.
  • 1919 - Volstead Act passed by US Congress, starts prohibition over President Woodrow Wilson's veto.
  • 1929 - First child born in aircraft, in Miami, Florida, USA.
  • 1929 - New York Stock Enchange drops 12.9 percent.
  • 1936 - President Franklin Roosevelt rededicates Statue of Liberty on its 50th anniversary.
  • 1942 - Train crashes into bus, killing 16 and injuring 20 (Detroit, Michigan).
  • 1965 - In St. Louis, Missouri, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch, a 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel. The arch was erected to commemorate President Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
  • 1969 - US President Richard Nixon signs Executive Order 11490, which consolidates 23 previous oxecutive orders, for Emergency Preparedness.
  • 1970 - US/USSR sign an agreement to discuss joint space efforts.
  • 1980 - U.S. President Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan debate in Cleveland, Ohio. Reagan's genial, witty performance causes him to overtake Carter in the polls.
  • 1988 - Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen gives US$10 million to University of Washington library.
  • 1997 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average gains a record 337.17 to 7,498.32. One billion shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time ever.
  • 2005 - Vice presidential adviser Lewis "Scooter" Libby resigns after being charged with obstruction of justice, perjury and making a false statement in the US Central Intelligence Agency leak investigation.
  • 2007 - The Boston Red Sox win the 2007 World Series in a four-game sweep against the Colorado Rockies.
  • 2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average rises 889.35 points, or 10.88 percent, to 9,065.12, its second-biggest point gain. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gains 91.59 points, or 10.79 percent, to 940.51, also its second-biggest point gain. The Nasdaq Composite Index rises 143.57 points, or 9.53 percent, to 1,649.47.

  • 2007 - Elections in Argentina for the President and members of the National Congress. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner wins presidential elections and becomes the first female elected president in Argentina.
  • 2008 - The International Monetary Fund reaches an agreement with Hungary for a US$25.1-billion loan package to help the country.
  • 2008 - Volkswagen briefly becomes the world's biggest company by market value, with short sellers paying up to 1,005 euros a share. At that price Volkswagen's voting stock was worth 296 billion euros (US$370 billion).
