Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - John Sculley agrees to allow some Macintosh technology in Microsoft's Windows in return for Bill Gates delaying release of Excel for Windows.
  • 1994 - Uruguay issues a 2-peso postage stamp for the 50th anniversary of the Uruguayan Press Association, showing a personal computer.
  • 1999 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A personal computer is used to write a letter.
  • 2003 - Apple Computer releases Mac OS X 10.3 operating system. Code-name during development was Panther.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1923 - Walt Disney writes to Margaret Winkler, informing her that the first Alice Comedy will be titled Alice's Day at Sea.
  • 1929 - The Silly Symphony film Springtime is released to theaters.
  • 1941 - The Donald Duck film Donald's Camera is released to theaters.
  • 1947 - Walt Disney testifies at the House Un-American Activities Committee about suspected Communists previously employed at the studios. Disney names Herbert Sorrell, David Hilberman, and the League of Women Voters, erroneously meaning the Hollywood League of Women Shoppers.
  • 1956 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring Behind the Cameras in Lapland, and the film The Alaskan Eskimo.
  • 1958 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, entitled Rusty and the Falcon.
  • 1965 - The Orlando Sentinel newspaper runs a story with headline "We say: 'Mystery' Industry is Disney".
  • 1965 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Flight of the White Stallions, part two.
  • 1971 - During the three-day gala Grand Opening ceremony at Walt Disney World, a three-hour torchlit luau and show are held on the beach of the Polynesian Village for 1000 invited guests, with the debut of the Electrical Water Pageant.
  • 1981 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled A Disney Halloween.
  • 1994 - The animated TV series Gargoyles first airs.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the film Alice in Wonderland on laserdisc in the US, for US$100.
  • 1999 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US.
    • Herbie the Love Bug appears, suspended from the ceiling of a restaurant.
    • Posters for the film It's Pat and Ernest Goes Straight to Video also appear.

  • 2001 - Disney's acquisition of the Fox Family Channel closes, with final total price at US$5.2 billion.
  • 2003 - Disney makes a limited release of the animated feature film Brother Bear to theaters in Los Angeles and New York City.
  • 2008 - Disney releases the live-action feature film High School Musical 3: Senior Year to theaters in Canada.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1985 - A special air flight leaves Newark, New Jersey, bound for Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Malcolm Konner Chevrolet dealership pays to fly a group of purchasers of RPO 4001ZA, the 1986 Malcolm Konner Special Edition Corvette, to the Corvette plant. There, they will tour the plant, attend a special ceremony to pick up their keys, then embark on a three-day 1000-mile rally back to the New Jersey dealership. Chevrolet made 50 coupes available, 20 manual transmission, 30 automatic, as a $500 option, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the first group of Malcolm Konner-sponsored purchasers of Corvettes to pick up their cars at the plant.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Allied forces agree that in the event of a German attack, to advance into Belgium to the Scheldt River.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler meets with Marshal Pétain at Montoire, France. Pétain agrees to collaborate against Britain, in return for compensation in Africa and a high place in the New Europe.
  • 1941 - German forces capture Kharkov.
  • 1942 - 88 British Lancaster bombers make a daylight raid on Milan, Italy. The Caproni aircraft factory and other targets are hit. Three planes are lost.
  • 1942 - (dusk) 71 British bombers repeat an attack on Milan, Italy, but bad weather makes for poor results.
  • 1944 - (morning) Canadian forces launch Operation Vitality I, an attack on the Beveland Canal.
  • 1944 - Allied forces seal off the South Beveland isthmus near the port of Antwerp, Belgium.
  • 1945 - In Akershus, Norway, Vidkun Quisling is executed.
  • 1994 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
  • 1995 - The Republic of China issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1984 - In New York City, the Electronic Games Design Awards (Arkies) are presented to top 27 computer, video, educational, standalone, and arcade games of 1984, as selected by readers of Electronic Games magazine.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases the Metroid Prime Pinball video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2006 - Sega releases the Phantasy Star Universe video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2006 - Capcom releases the Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded video game for the PlayStation Portable in the USA. Price is US$29.99. Includes 15 games: Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II: Championship Edition, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fightiung, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Commando, Knights of The Round, 1942, 1943.
  • 2006 - Namco Bandai releases the .hack//G.U. Vol. 1//Rebirth video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2007 - In London, England, the British Academy Video Games Awards are announced:
    • Best sports game: Wii Sports;
    • Best gameplay: Wii Sports;
    • Best innovation: Wii Sports;
    • Best strategy: Wii Sports;
    • Best game: BioShock;
    • Best action and adventure: Crackdown;
    • Best use of audio: Crackdown;
    • Best story and character: God of War 2;
    • Best technical achievement: God of War 2.

  • 2011 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Rumble Blast video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the US.
  • 2014 - Nintendo releases the Bayonetta 2 video game for the Wii U in the USA.
  • 2017 - Sony Interactive Entertainment releases the Hidden Agenda video game for the PlayStation 4 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 2006 - Poland issues a postage stamp depicting the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm, Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1850 - The British Treasury sends a memorandum to the Colonial Office severely criticizing Canadian Inspector-General Francis Hincks' proposed Currency Act of 1850, and demanding its disallowance.
  • 2007 - The Royal Canadian Mint launches the 2007 25-cent Alpine Skiing circulating coin, the fifth coin of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games program. The design was created by Glenn Green.

USA coin history:

  • 2007 - Representative Zack Space introduces H.R. 3956 in the House of Representatives, seeking the overturning of the ban on melting 1-cent and 5-cent coins, and transferring authority to deterine the metal content of coins from Congress to the Treasury.

Sports history:

  • 1857 - World's first soccer club, Sheffield F.C., is founded in England.
  • 1889 - Softball rules adopted by Mid Winter Indoor Baseball League.
  • 1903 - First trotter to run a mile under two minutes (Lou Dillon 1:58.1).
  • 1940 - Japan eliminates US terms (strike, play ball) from baseball.
  • 1971 - Chuck Hughes, Detroit Lions' player, collapses during game and later dies.
  • 1971 - Texas Stadium opens - Dallas Cowboys beat New England Patriots 44-21.
  • 1974 - Billy Martin named American League Manager of the Year (Texas Rangers).
  • 1978 - NHL Toronto Maple Leafs set own team record of 28 points versus New York Islanders.
  • 1984 - German tennis star Steffi Graf plays her first professional tennis match.
  • 1988 - New York Islanders' and NHL high scorer, Mike Bossy retires.
  • 1989 - After a week's delay due to earthquake, World Series game three is played (World Series #86).
  • 1992 - The Toronto Blue Jays win the World Series of baseball in six games, making them the first Canadian team to win.
  • 2004 - Michael Schumacher wins his 7th Formula One World Drivers Championship, his 5th consecutive win, making him the most successful driver in the history of Formula One.
  • 2006 - Major League Baseball officials and the Players' Association announce a five-year collective bargaining agreement has been reached.
  • 2021 - At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Islanders beats Vegas Golden Knights by score 2-0.
  • 2021 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL regular season game: Detroit Red Wings beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 6-3.
  • 2021 - At Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, NHL regular season game: Nashville Predators beats Minnesota Wild by score 5-2.
  • 2021 - At TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, NHL regular season game: Boston Bruins beats San Jose Sharks by score 4-3.

Space exploration history:

  • 1851 - William Lassell discovers Ariel and Umbriel, satellites of Uranus.
  • 1960 - Disaster on USSR launch pad, kills missile expert Nedelin and team (unconfirmed); USSR claims he was killed in plane crash.
  • 1984 - Intelsat 5 re-enters Earth's atmosphere five months after it failed.
  • 1995 - A total solar eclipse is visible from Iran, India, Thailand, and Southeast Asia.
  • 2007 - In the space of a few hours, Comet Holmes develops a coma and flares up to half a million times its former brightness, becoming visible to the naked eye. Its coma later becomes larger in volume than the Sun, making it the second comet to do so in 2007 after Comet McNaught.
  • 2007 - The Chinese National Space Administration launches its first space probe to the Moon, Chang'e-1, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1988 - Typhoon Ruby sinks Philippine ferry; hundreds drown.
  • 2005 - Hurricane Wilma makes landfall in southwestern Florida as a category 3 hurricane.
  • 2012 - (to October 30) Hurricane Sandy kills at least 209 people in the Caribbean, Bahamas, United States and Canada. Considerable storm surge damage causes major disruption to the eastern seaboard of the United States.
  • 2022 - In Bangladesh, cyclone Sitrang makes landfall, killing 28 people, destroying thousands of homes, and leaving millions of people without electricity.

USA history:

  • 1871 - Mob in Los Angeles, California, hangs 18 Chinese.
  • 1926 - Magician Harry Houdini performs in Detroit, Michigan, but collapses during intermissions from stomach pain.
  • 1929 - First day of New York stock market crash, Black Thursday.
  • 1929 - Song "Happy Days are Here Again" is published in the USA.
  • 1931 - The George Washington Bridge connecting New York to New Jersey is dedicated.
  • 1939 - Nylon stockings go on sale for first time (Wilmington, Delaware, USA).
  • 1940 - 40 hour work week goes into effect in US (Fair Labor Standards of 1938).
  • 1947 - Series of forest fires burn US$30 million of timber (New England States).
  • 1962 - During the American blockade of Cuba, Soviet tanker Bucharest approaches the quarantine zone. U.S. military forces go to DEFCON 2, preparing for full-scale war with the Soviet Union.
  • 1973 - Heavy fog causes 65-car collision killing nine on New Jersey Turnpike.
  • 1984 - Intelsat 5 re-enters Earth's atmosphere five months after it failed.
  • 1987 - NBC technicians accept pact, end 118 day strike.
  • 1989 - Disgraced TV evangelist Jim Bakker is sentenced to 45 years in prison and fined $500,000 on 24 counts of fraud.
  • 2005 - Hurricane Wilma makes landfall in southwestern Florida as a category 3 hurricane.
  • 2007 - The inaugural Caesars Palace Classic poker tournament is held at Caesars Palace casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. David Singer wins, collecting US$1 million.
  • 2007 - Merrill Lynch publishes its third quarter financial results, including a US$8.4 billion write-down resulting from bad mortgage loans. This is the company's first quarterly loss in six years.
  • 2009 - The number of US bank failures this year has topped more than 100 after US federal regulators shut down three small Florida banks. More US banks have now failed this year than in any year since 1992.
  • 2012 - (to October 30) Hurricane Sandy kills at least 209 people in the Caribbean, Bahamas, United States and Canada. Considerable storm surge damage causes major disruption to the eastern seaboard of the United States.

  • 1836 - The match is patented.

  • 1935 - Italy invades Ethiopia.
  • 1964 - Zambia (Northern Rhodesia) gains independence from Britain (National Day).
  • 1973 - Yom Kippur War ends, Israel 65 miles from Cairo, Egypt, 26 miles from Damascus, Syria.
  • 2003 - The Concorde makes its last commercial flight, bringing the era of airliner supersonic travel to a close, at least for the time being.
  • 2008 - The International Monetary Fund reaches an agreement with Iceland for a US$2.1-billion loan package to help the country.
