Personal computer history:

  • 1983 - Apple Computer holds its annual sales conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The theme of the event is "Leading the Way". The 1984 commercial is shown, then the Macintosh is unveiled.
  • 1996 - At the Microprocessor Forum, Digital Equipment demonstrates the Digital 21264 Alpha processor operating at 500 MHz.
  • 1997 - In Japan, NEC Computer releases 26 models of the PC98-NX series, its first industry-standard (Windows-Intel) personal computers. NEC also releases 15 new models in its proprietary PC98 series.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - The Iris Theater in Los Angeles previews the Alice Comedy film Alice in the Jungle.
  • 1930 - The Mickey Mouse film The Picnic is released to theaters.
  • 1931 - The Silly Symphony film The Spider and the Fly is released to theaters.
  • 1940 - Igor Stravinsky sells the film rights to Disney for "Renard", "Fireworks", and "The Firebird".
  • 1941 - RKO Radio Pictures releases Disney's animated feature film Dumbo to theaters. It cost US$812,000 to make.
  • 1942 - The Goofy film How to Swim is released to theaters.
  • 1953 - The Donald Duck film Rugged Bear is released. Humphrey Bear makes his first appearance.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Duck for Hire, with Donald Duck.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring the first "The Swamp Fox" episode, Birth of the Swamp Fox.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Gallegher Goes West: Showdown with the Sundown Kid.
  • 1971 - A three-day gala Grand Opening ceremony begins at Walt Disney World. Arthur Fiedler conducts the World Symphony Orchestra, formed by musicians from 60 countries, playing to 2500 invited guests. 40,000 visitors to the park on the first day.
  • 1973 - The ABC TV network airs Wide World of Entertainment, including Walt Disney - A Golden Anniversary Salute.
  • 1982 - The Le Carnival de Lumière nighttime show debuts on World Showcase Lagoon.
  • 1982 - The Sunrise Terrace Restaurant opens in Communicore West at EPCOT Center.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled EPCOT Center: The Opening Ceremonies.
  • 1985 - The Nine Dragons Restaurant opens in the China pavilion in World Showcase in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World.
  • 1990 - Disney announces the formation of the limited partnership Touchwood Pacific Partners I, a group of Japanese banks and investment firms. The group will provide financing for Disney live-action films in the coming years, sharing in risks and profits.
  • 1992 - The Superior Court of California rules that Disney can use the MGM name and the lion logo at its theme parks.
  • 1994 - The Fox TV network airs the last episode of the Disney TV show Hardball.
  • 1998 - Warner releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Air Bud to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista releases the Miramax live-action feature film Halloween:H20 to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 2001 - Disney releases the film Dumbo on DVD and videocassette. This edition has been digitally restored and remastered. Included with the film is the animated short Silly Symphony film The Flying Mouse.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1960 - At the Laguna Seca raceway in California, an SCCA professional series race is held. The Sting Ray racer has a collision and does not finish.
  • 2007 - The American Le Mans Series hold its end of season awards banquet, in Monterey, California.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Hungary makes territorial demands of Czechoslovakia.
  • 1940 - (1500 hours) Adolf Hitler and Spain's Francisco Franco meet for nine hours in Hendaye, Spain, on the French/Spanish border. Adolf Hitler tries to get Spain committed to the war, or allow German troops to assault Gibraltar. Franco reluctantly agrees to eventually enter the war, in return for military, agricultural, and territorial demands, and only at a time of Spain's choosing.
  • 1942 - (evening) Lieutenant General Bernard Montgomery begins an assault of the British 8th Army against German positions outside of El Alamein. The first phase is Operation Lightfoot, in which British Royal Engineers begin clearing paths through German minefields. Initial strengths of the two sides are British: 230,000 men, 1440 tanks, 1200 combat aircraft; German and Italian: 80,000 men, 490 tanks, 350 aircraft.
  • 1942 - German General George Stumme dies of a heart attack.
  • 1942 - (evening) British bombers set out to attack Genoa, Italy, but due to bad weather, they instead hit Savona, 30 miles away.
  • 1944 - Great Britain, the US, and the USSR recognize the "Algiers Committee" with leader Charles de Gaulle as Provisional Government of the French Republic.
  • 1944 - Units of the Canadian 1st Army begin an assault to capture the railway dike to Beveland peninsula of Belgium.
  • 1944 - (evening) 1055 British bombers attack Essen, Germany. 1163 buildings are destroyed, 820 are killed.
  • 1952 - German former Army Commander-in-Chief Albert Kesslering is pardoned and freed from British captivity.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein.

Video game history:

  • 1996 - The National Broadcasting Company airs the NewsRadio TV show in the USA. An arcade video game replaces a sandwich vending machine in an office. It is called Stargate Defender, but no actual game play is shown.
  • 1997 - Four game developers release the first arcade games based on Intel's Pentium II platform and the Open Arcade Architecture. This system allows game changes by software only, without requiring a physical machine change.
  • 2000 - Sega releases the Quake III Arena video game for the Dreamcast in the US.
  • 2001 - Sony CEA announces it will release a Linux-enabled version of its PlayStation 2 video game system outside of Japan.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Magical Starsign video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2008 - Ubisoft releases the Far Cry 2 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA and Canada.
  • 2012 - Microsoft Game Studios releases the Forza Horizon video game for the Xbox 360.
  • 2012 - Electronic Arts releases the Medal of Honor: Warfighter video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1632 - Bernard joins King Gustav Adolf, making the army total 12,000 on foot, and 7500 on horse.
  • 1642 - At Breitenfeld, Swedish general Lennart Torstensson is victorious over the Imperial army, which loses 5000 men dead, 5000 men prisoner, and 46 field guns.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1997 - The first auction of the John Jay Pittman collection is completed. Some prices realized:
    • 1 cent 1936 dot, Gem Specimen: US$110,000 (CDN$170,000);
    • 10 cent 1936 dot: US$121,000 (CDN$185,000).

USA coin history:

  • 1876 - The New Orleans Mint reopens as an Assay Office.
  • 1973 - Treasury Department announces design competition for US Bicentennial coins.
  • 2008 - (to October 25) Heritage Auction Galleries conducts their October Dallas Signature Auction. Some highlights:
    • $20 1854-O Coronet, AU-55 PCGS: $603,750;
    • $20 1856-O Coronet, AU-58 NGC: $576,150.

Sports history:

  • 1871 - Columbia and Sappho (US) beat Livonia (United Kingdom) in third America's Cup yacht race.
  • 1884 - First World Series OKed by AA, Providence (National League) beats New York Mets (AA) 6-0.
  • 1910 - Philadelphia Athletics beat Chicago Cubs four games to one in 7th World Series.
  • 1915 - First national horseshoe throwing championship (Kellerton, Iowa, USA).
  • 1921 - Green Bay Packers play first APFA game, win 7-6 over Minneapolis Marines.
  • 1930 - The first miniature golf tournament is completed in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
  • 1964 - Japanese beat Russians for first Olympic Gold in woman's volleyball.
  • 1967 - New Jersey Americans (later New York / New Jersey Nets) play first ABA game.
  • 1968 - Kip Keino (Kenya) wins gold medal for 1,500m (3 minutes 34.9 seconds).
  • 1973 - New York Yankees' general manager and president Lee MacPhail named American League president.
  • 1975 - New York Islanders' Glenn Resch's 5th shut-out opponent-Philadelphia Flyers 3-0.
  • 1988 - Boston Celtics play Spain in Madrid.
  • 1993 - Joe Carter hits only the second baseball World Series winning home run as the Toronto Blue Jays win Game Six of the World Series to beat the Philadelphia Phillies four games to two.
  • 2021 - At Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington, USA, NHL regular season game: Vancouver Canucks beats Seattle Kraken by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Islanders beats Arizona Coyotes by score 3-0.
  • 2021 - At Enterprise Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, NHL regular season game: Saint Louis Blues beats Los Angeles Kings by score 7-3.
  • 2021 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Nashville Predators by score 6-4.
  • 2021 - At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Columbus Blue Jackets by score 5-1.

  • 2021 - At Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats Ottawa Senators by score 3-2.

Space exploration history:

  • 1957 - First test firing of Vanguard satellite launch vehicle, TV-3.
  • 1989 - US 62nd manned space mission STS 34 (Atlantis 5) returns from space.
  • 2004 - Brazil's "Operation Cajuana" launches its first rocket into space, the VSB-30, just 14 months after its space program experienced a deadly launch pad accident.
  • 2007 - The Space Shuttle Discovery is successfully launched on mission STS-120.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2015 - Hurricane Patricia becomes the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere and the second strongest worldwide, with winds of 215 mph and a pressure of 872 mbar.

USA history:

  • 1775 - Continental Congress approves resolution barring blacks from army.
  • 1850 - The first National Women's Rights Convention begins in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA.
  • 1864 - Battle of Westport, Missouri.
  • 1864 - USA General Samuel R Curtis defeats Confederate General Stirling Price.
  • 1876 - The New Orleans Mint reopens as an Assay Office.
  • 1886 - The Statue of Liberty is presented to the US, a gift from the government of France.
  • 1915 - 25,000 women march in New York City, demanding right to vote.
  • 1929 - The first North American transcontinental air service begins between New York City and Los Angeles, California.
  • 1935 - At the Palace Chop House in Newark, New Jersey, Arthur Flegenheimer AKA Dutch Schultz, Otto "Abbadabba" Biederman, and two others are killed by the crime syndicate.
  • 1946 - United Nations General Assembly second session convenes in Flushing Meadows, New York, USA.
  • 1947 - NAACP petition on racism, "An Appeal to the World" presented to United Nations.
  • 1954 - USA, Great Britain, France, and USSR agree to end occupation of Germany.
  • 1957 - First test firing of Vanguard satellite launch vehicle, TV-3.
  • 1962 - US navy ships begin a blockade of Cuba, to prevent Soviet ships from bringing in supplies to complete building missile bases.
  • 1964 - Smithsonian Institution's Hall of Monetary History and Medallic Art opens.
  • 1973 - US President Richard Nixon agrees to turn over White House tape recordings to Judge Sirica.
  • 1983 - Near-simultaneous suicide truck-bombings destroy both the French and the United States Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 US servicemen, 58 French paratroopers and six Lebanese civilians.
  • 1987 - On a vote of 58-42, the United States Senate rejects President Ronald Reagan's nomination of Robert Bork to the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 1989 - Phillips Disaster in Pasadena, Texas kills 23 and injures 314 others.
  • 1995 - In Houston, Texas, Yolanda Saldivar is convicted of first degree murder in the shooting death of Selena Quintanilla Perez and three days later is sentenced to life in prison. Saldivar will be eligible for parole in 2025.
  • 2000 - American Secretary of State Madeleine Albright holds talks with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il.
  • 2001 - Apple Computer introduces the iPod portable music player. It features 5 GB hard drive, and FireWire port. Price is US$399.
  • 2006 - Jeffrey Skilling is sentenced to 24 years and four months in US federal prison on charges of fraud and insider trading relating to the financial collapse of Enron.
  • 2007 - The Space Shuttle Discovery is successfully launched on mission STS-120.
  • 2019 - Pacific Gas & Electric Company cuts power to over 180,000 homes and businesses in northern California, to prevent fires.

Other history:

  • 1954 - Britain, England, France and USSR agree to end occupation of Germany.
  • 1956 - First video recording on magnetic tape televised coast-to-coast in USA.
  • 1970 - Gary Gabelich sets auto speed record 622.4 mph (1,002 kph).
  • 1983 - Suicide terrorist truck bomb kills 243 US personnel in Beirut, Lebanon.
