Personal computer history:

  • 1996 - In San Hose, California, the 1996 Microprocessor Forum is held, over four days.
  • 1996 - At the Microprocessor Forum, Motorola and IBM announce the 240 MHz PowerPC 603e microprocessor.
  • 1996 - At the Microprocessor Forum, Exponential Technology debuts the 533 MHz X704 PowerPC compatible processor for the Macintosh OS and Windows NT microcomputers.
  • 1998 - At the Networld+Interop trade show, Microsoft releases Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.
  • 2005 - Universal Pictures releases the film Doom to theaters in the USA, based on the computer game. The film cost US$100 million to make and market.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 25th Alice Comedy film, Alice in the Jungle.
  • 1934 - The first issue of Le Journal de Mickey is published, in France.
  • 1951 - Disney releases the Goofy film Fathers are People to theaters. Goofy Junior and Mrs. Goofy appear for the first time.
  • 1962 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Man Is His Own Worst Enemy with Professor Ludwig Von Drake.
  • 1965 - Reporter Emily Bavar writes in the Orlando Sentinel predicting the mystery land buyer is Walt Disney.
  • 1973 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Mustang! part two.
  • 1982 - Disney releases the film Tron to theaters in the UK.
  • 1982 - Disney releases the film The Watcher in the Woods to theaters in the UK.
  • 1983 - Buena Vista releases the live-action feature film Never Cry Wolf to theaters in the US. The film is based on the book by Farley Mowat.
  • 1990 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere film Back to Hannibal: The Return of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
  • 1992 - The film Beauty and the Beast is released to theaters in France.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Robert A. Heinlein's The Puppet Masters to theaters.
  • 1996 - The keel of the Disney Magic cruise ship is laid.
  • 1997 - Palau issues 17 postage stamps depicting Disney characters (Mickey Mouse and Daisy Duck) promoting reading.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1983 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic - The Runoffs final races of the SCCA Club Racing series are held, over three days. Finishing 3rd in GT-1 class is Alan Sevadjian in a Corvette.
  • 1983 - Warner Bros. Pictures releases the film The Right Stuff to theaters in the USA. An astronaut says "Got me a Corvette" as one of the perks of being an astronaut.
  • 2006 - At the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, the Monterey Sports Car Championships race is held, round ten (final) of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class and 9th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT1 class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.

  • 2006 - At the end of the American Le Mans Series, Corvette drivers Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta are tied for first place in the GT1 Drivers Championship. Corvette Racing is first in GT1 Team Championship.
  • 2007 - At the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Californiia, the Monterey Sports Car Championship race is held, round ten (final) of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 13th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette, driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • Finishing 14th is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 17th is the Blackdog Racing #12 Corvette driven by Brian Kubinski.
    • Finishing 21st is the #87 Corvette driven by Tomy Drisso.
    • Finishing 23rd is the Foster Motorsports #17 Corvette driven by Rob Foster.
    • In 28th place, but not finishing the race, is the Whelen Engineering #30 Corvette driven by Eric Curran.

World War II history:

  • 1933 - German Chancellor Adolf Hitler withdraws Germany from the League of Nations.
  • 1938 - Adolf Hitler instructs the German armed forces to prepare "the liquidation of Czechoslovakia".
  • 1941 - Quote by Adolf Hitler: "when Russia collapses and England makes peace it would be only a nuisance to have Japan involved", regarding Japanese reluctance to join the war versus Russia.
  • 1944 - (0230 hours) Four German Panther tanks and two self-propelled guns strike at Canadian Seaforths, but are ambushed by Canadian tank-hunting team.
  • 1999 - Poland issues a postage stamp depicting a memorial to heroes of World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1998 - Square releases the Xenogears video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1998 - Konami releases the Metal Gear Solid video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1998 - In Japan, Nintendo releases the Game Boy Color portable video game system. It features 2.1 MHz processor, and 32 kB RAM. It can display 10, 32, or 56 colors simultaneously from a palette of 32,000. Size is 3 x 5.25 x 1 inches; weight is 6.7 ounces.
  • 2000 - First Look Pictures shows the film Dead Babies at the Bergen International Film Festival in Norway. The game Perfect Dark is shown on the Nintendo 64, but with a PlayStation 2 controller.
  • 2002 - In Japan, Square unveils the Final Fantasy X-2 video game for the PlayStation 2, showing a video trailer for the game.
  • 2002 - Nintendo releases the Mario Party 4 video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2003 - Sega releases the ESPN NBA Basketball video game for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2003 - Namco releases the Time Crisis 3 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Universal Pictures releases the film Doom to theaters in the USA, based on the computer/video game. The film cost US$100 million to make and market.
  • 2008 - 2K Games releases the Bioshock video game for the PlayStation 3 in the USA.
  • 2008 - Microsoft Game Studios releases the Fable II video game for the Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2011 - In Los Angeles, California, a touring symphony makes its first performance of The Legend of Zelda music.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - Margrave Christian, prince of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, allies with King Gustav Adolf against the Emperor.
  • 1632 - King Gustav Adolf arrives in Saxony.
  • 1648 - News of the end of the war in Europe reaches Stockholm.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1954 - 22 numismatic hobbyists in the Montreal area meet to form a coin club. Fred Bowman is elected president.
  • 2004 - At the Minto Armory in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Royal Canadian Mint launches a colorized circulating 25-cent coin, with a red and black poppy in the center. The design was created by Cosme Saffioti. Tim Hortons restaurants are the exclusive first day distributor. This is the world's first colorized business-strike coin in circulation.

USA coin history:

  • 1997 - Senator Rod Grams of Minnesota introduces S. 1300 in the US Senate, to provide for the minting and circulation of a new dollar coin.
  • 1997 - (to October 23) In Baltimore, Maryland, David Akers Numismatics conducts an auction of the John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One, Selected Numismatic Rarities. A 10-coin 1843 Proof set of US coins sells for US$412,500.

Sports history:

  • 1871 - First US amateur outdoor athletic games (New York).
  • 1905 - England Pilgrim Association beats All New York 11, 7-1 in soccer at Polo Grounds.
  • 1935 - Hank Greenberg is unanimously selected as American League Most Valuable Player.
  • 1973 - The Oakland Athletics' win the 70th World Series defeating the New York Mets, 5-2 in Game 7.
  • 1974 - First New York Islanders' shut-out opponent-Billy Smith 5-0 vs Washington Capitals.
  • 1975 - Boston Red Sox Carlton Fisk's 12th inning home run beats Cincinnati Reds 7-6 in game six of World Series.
  • 1976 - Cincinnati Reds sweep New York Yankees in 73rd World Series.
  • 1976 - New York Knicks retire first number, 19, Willis Reed.
  • 1979 - Greta Waitz wins woman participation in New York City marathon (2:27:33).
  • 1980 - In Game six in front of 65,838 fans at Veterans Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies win their first World Series ever in the 98-year history of the franchise by defeating the Kansas City Royals, 4-1.
  • 1984 - Steve Jones runs Chicago Marathon in world record 2:08:05.
  • 1988 - Boston Celtics beat Yugoslavia 113-85 in Madrid, Spain.
  • 1989 - Betram Lee and Peter Bynoe purchase Denver Nuggets for US$65 million.
  • 1989 - Houston becomes first major college football team to gain 1000 yards in a game.
  • 1998 - The New York Yankees defeat the San Diego Padres to sweep them in the baseball World Series. The Yankees had a magical season with 114 regular-season wins and 11 postseason victories (125 total - the most by any team in 123 years of Major League Baseball).
  • 2004 - The Saint Louis Cardinals defeat the Houston Astros in game seven to win the National League Championship Series, advancing to the World Series for the first time in 17 years.
  • 2007 - Kimi Räikkönen is crowned world champion as the 2007 Formula One season ends at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
  • 2021 - At Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, USA, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Arizona Coyotes by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL regular season game: Vancouver Canucks beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Anaheim Ducks by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, NHL regular season game: New York Rangers beats Nashville Predators by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Detroit Red Wings by score 3-0.
  • 2021 - At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL regular season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats New York Islanders by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA, NHL regular season game: Washington Capitals beats New Jersey Devils by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida, USA, NHL regular season game: Florida Panthers beats Colorado Avalanche by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: San Jose Sharks beats Ottawa Senators by score 2-1.
  • 2021 - At Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, NHL regular season game: Carolina Hurricanes beats Montreal Canadiens by score 4-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1897 - Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago is dedicated.
  • 1975 - Venera 9, first craft to orbit the planet Venus.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2020 - Heavy rains brought by tropical storm Linfa cause landslides at the Rao Trang 3 hydroelectric plant in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam, killing 17 construction workers and 13 soldiers who were on a rescue mission.

USA history:

  • 1797 - The US Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched in Boston harbor.
  • 1861 - Battle of Balls Bluff, Virginia.
  • 1868 - Severe earthquake at 7:53 AM, centered in Hayward, California.
  • 1872 - The Treaty of Washington is signed by Canada and the USA, settling the "Pig War" of 1859, establishing the final boundary between the USA and Canada, granting the USA sole and permanent possession of San Juan Island, south of Vancouver Island.
  • 1879 - In Menlo Park, New Jersey, Thomas Alva Edison succeeds in creating an electric lamp, with carbonized cotton filament, burning for 14.5 hours.
  • 1892 - The World's Columbian Exposition is dedicated.
  • 1897 - Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago is dedicated.
  • 1915 - The first transatlantic radiotelephone message is transmitted from Arlington, Virginia to Paris, France.
  • 1917 - First Americans see action on the front lines of European war.
  • 1944 - US troops capture Aachen, first large German city to fall.
  • 1948 - The first facsimile (FAX) is demonstrated through high-speed radio transmission, in Washington D.C.
  • 1959 - U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the executive order transferring Wernher von Braun and other German scientists to NASA.
  • 1959 - In New York City, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of contemporary art, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, opens to the public.
  • 1967 - Thousands opposing Vietnam War try to storm the Pentagon.
  • 1971 - US President Richard Nixon nominates Lewis F Powell and William H Rehnquist to US Supreme Court, following resignations of Justices Hugo Black and John Harlan.
  • 1976 - American Saul Bellow wins Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • 1977 - US recalls William Bowdler, ambassador to South Africa.
  • 1986 - The Compact of Free Association between the USA and the Marshall Islands becomes effective.
  • 1987 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average rises 10.15 percent.
  • 1989 - Buck Helm found alive after being buried four days, in San Francisco earthquake.
  • 1991 - The Oakland Hills firestorm in California kills 25 and destroys 3,469 homes and apartments.
  • 2001 - What More Can I Give benefit concert held in Washington D.C., featuring performances by Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Mariah Carey, James Brown, Al Green, Carole King, the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, P!nk, and others.

  • 1805 - Battle of Trafalgar, Admiral Horatio Nelson defeats French and Spanish fleet and dies.
