Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1975 - Bill Gates and Paul Allen write to MITS, saying they have a BASIC language for the Intel 8080 processor. They propose licensing it for use on the Altair in exchange for royalty payments.
  • 1979 - Software Arts is incorporated.
  • 1985 - Coleco Industries announces it will sell off its Adam computer inventory and abandon the home computer business.
  • 2008 - China's Lenovo Group introduces three new IdeaPad notebook computers in the United States. One is for sale now for $799. The others will be released in coming weeks and months.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1931 - Disney completes the Mickey Mouse film The Birthday Party. Minnie Mouse, Horace Horsecollar, and Clarabelle Cow also appear.
  • 1937 - The Mickey Mouse film The Worm Turns is released to theaters.
  • 1938 - Leopold Stokowski arrives in Los Angeles to approve the story for The Sorcerer's Apprentice and record the score.
  • 1977 - The Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland attraction in Disneyland closes.
  • 1977 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, entitled The Golden Dog.
  • 1982 - The CBS TV network airs the Walt Disney show, entitled Man's Hunting Instinct.
  • 1984 - The Astuter Computer Revue show in EPCOT Computer Central at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1995 - The animated TV series The Shnookums & Meat Funny Cartoon Show first airs in syndication. It includes three segments: Shnookums and Meat, Pith Possum: Super Dynamic Possum of Tomorrow, and Tex Tinstar: The Best in the West.
  • 1996 - The World of Motion attraction in Future World in Epcot closes.
  • 1996 - Disney releases the film A Goofy Movie on laserdisc in the US, for US$30.
  • 1997 - Guyana issues fourteen postage stamps depicting various Disney characters celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year.
  • 2001 - Disney's Grand Californian Hotel opens.
  • 2002 - IMAX Corporation releases the film Beauty and the Beast to theaters in Belgium.
  • 2007 - The FX Network premieres the Dirt TV series.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1969 - Option A82 - Headrests is made part of the base Corvette, no longer an option.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - For the second (and final) time, German bombs fall on Ireland.
  • 1941 - (evening) British Bomber Command aircraft make attacks on Bremen, Germany.
  • 1942 - Invading Japanese forces occupy the Treasury Building in Manila, capturing about US$20 million of currency.
  • 1942 - (to January 6) Japanese aircraft make daily bombing attacks on Corregidor, Philippines. At least 25 bombers are shot down.
  • 1944 - (evening) 383 British bombers attack Berlin, Germany.
  • 1945 - (evening) Over 500 British Lancaster bombers attack Nuremberg, destroying most of the centre of the old city, and inflicting great damage to the industrial areas.
  • 1945 - (evening) 381 British Lancaster bombers attack the industrial area of Ludwigshafen, Germany.
  • 1946 - India issues four postage stamps in celebration of the victory of the Allied Nations.
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Japanese entering Manila, Philippines.
  • 2001 - Maldives issues 18 postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Swedish history:

  • 1512 - Svante Nilsson dies suddenly at a meeting in Västerås.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1908 - Governor General Earl Grey formally opens the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint. He strikes the first coin minted in Canada, a 50-cent piece. Countess of Grey strikes the first bronze cent. 1000 specimen sets are struck to mark the occasion. First chief engraver of the Mint is H.S. Low.
  • 1943 - A Proclamation changes the description of the reverse of the 5c coin.
  • 1944 - A Proclamation sets the design and dimensions for the 5c in steel.
  • 1946 - A Proclamation sets the design and dimensions for the 5c in nickel.
  • 1953 - A Proclamation sets the design and dimensions of Canada's coins, showing Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • 1958 - The first 1958 silver dollars are released.
  • 1963 - A Proclamation sets the dimensions of the 5c coin, changing it from 12-sided to round.
  • 1965 - A Proclamation changes the obverse of all coins to depict a more up-to-date image of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • 1965 - The Royal Canadian Mint begins accepting orders for 1965 mint sets. The Besserer Street post office in Ottawa sends two truck loads of 156 bags of mail to the Royal Canadian Mint. The mint receives an estimated 350,000 pieces of mail containing orders for 1965 mint sets. By 4:30 PM, the quota of 2 million mint sets is reached. 2.4 million orders are received in this one day.
  • 1967 - A Proclamation sets the designs for the reverses of the 1c through $1 coins, for commemorating the 100th anniversary of Confederation.
  • 1969 - The Royal Canadian Mint begins accepting orders for 1969 uncirculated coin sets and individual dollar coins.

USA coin history:

  • 1861 - The Philadelphia begins striking 1861-dated $20 gold coins with Paquet reverse dies.
  • 1892 - The Philadelphia Mint strikes first Barber-designed dimes.
  • 1908 - George Kunz purchases from the US Mint two 1907 Saint-Gaudens, With Periods, Rolled Edge gold eagles for the American Numismatic Society.
  • 1912 - The Denver Mint begins striking 1912-dated cents.
  • 1959 - The US Mint begins striking 1959 Lincoln Memorial cents for circulation.
  • 2002 - The US Mint releases the 2002 Tennessee state quarter dollar to circulation.
  • 2003 - The US Mint launches the 2003 Illinois State quarter dollar coin.

Sports history:

  • 1832 - First Curling club in US (Orchard Lake Curling Club) opens.
  • 1879 - First Test match hat-trick, Fred Spofforth at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
  • 1879 - Northwestern League (minor baseball league) is organized, in Rockford, Illinois.
  • 1909 - First official Dutch 11-city skate (Minne Hoekstra winner in 13:50).
  • 1911 - Brooklyn Dodgers' president Charles Ebbets announces purchase of grounds to build a new concrete-and-steel stadium to seat 30,000.
  • 1918 - NHL Montréal Wanderers disband after Westmount arena burns down.
  • 1933 - Donald Bradman scores 103 against the Bodyline attack in the second Test.
  • 1933 - NHL Boston Bruins beat New York Rangers in New York 13-3.
  • 1934 - Donald Bradman scores 253 New South Wales versus Queensland, 204 minutes, 29 fours 4 sixes.
  • 1936 - Donald Bradman scores 357 for South Africa versus Victoria, 424 minutes, 40 fours.
  • 1939 - Donald Bradman scores 107 South Africa versus Victoria, his fourth consecutive century.
  • 1961 - First AFL Championship Game, Houston Oilers beat Los Angeles Chargers 24-16.
  • 1965 - New York Jets sign quarterback Joe Namath.
  • 1966 - Green Bay Packers beat Cleveland Browns 23-12 in NFL championship game.
  • 1971 - A barrier collapses at Ibrox Park football ground at end of a soccer match in Glasgow, Scotland, killing 66.
  • 1972 - Dallas Cowboys beat San Francisco 49ers 14-3 in NFC championship game.
  • 1972 - Miami Dolphins beat Baltimore Colts 21-0 in AFC championship game.
  • 1977 - Bowie Kuhn suspends Atlanta Braves' owner Ted Turner for one year due to tampering charges in Gary Matthews free-agency signing.
  • 1979 - 30th New York Islanders' shut-out opponent-Glenn Resch 9-0 versus Vancouver Canucks.
  • 1979 - Gavaskar gets twin tons for India for the third time (versus West Indies).
  • 1980 - 68th Australian Men Tennis: Guillermo Vilas beat John Sadri (7-6, 6-3, 6-2).
  • 1981 - Mary Terstegge Meagher swims female record 200 metre butterfly (2:05.65).
  • 1981 - Sylvester Clarke knocks out spectator with brick, West Indies versus Pakistan.
  • 1982 - 70th Australian Mens Tennis: Johan Kriek beats S Denton (6-2, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4).
  • 1982 - San Diego Chargers beat Miami Dolphins, 41-38 in 13:52 of overtime.
  • 1983 - Ken Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio completes record 20 consecutive passes.
  • 1984 - Darryl Cullinan, 16, scores his first first-class cricket century.
  • 1984 - Miami beats Nebraska in Orange Bowl for college football championship.
  • 1985 - 90th hat trick in New York Islanders' history-Brent Sutter.
  • 1985 - Australia beats West Indies by innings at Sydney Cricket Ground, Bob Holland 10 match wickets.
  • 1985 - Nevada-Las Vegas beats Utah 142-140, highest college basketball score.
  • 1985 - Undefeated Brigham Young University becomes college football champion.
  • 1986 - New York Islanders' Mike Bossy scores his 500th goal.
  • 1987 - Pennsylvania State upsets Miami in Fiesta Bowl for college football championships.
  • 1989 - Notre Dame beats West Virginia for college football championship.
  • 1989 - UCLA wins a record 7th consecutive bowl game.
  • 1991 - Colorado wins its first AP national title poll.
  • 1992 - Test debut of Shane Warne, versus India at Sydney.
  • 1995 - Carquest Bowl 5: South Carolina beats West Virginia, 24-21.
  • 2022 - At United Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA, NHL regular season game: Calgary Flames beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, NHL regular season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Vegas Golden Knights by score 5-4.
  • 2022 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats Anaheim Ducks by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: New Jersey Devils beats Washington Capitals by score 4-3.

  • 1999 - A brutal snowstorm smashes into the Midwestern United States, causing 14 inches (359 mm) of snow at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and 19 inches (487 mm) at Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago, temperatures plunge to -13 degrees F (-25 degrees C), and 68 deaths are reported.

USA history:

  • 1779 - Continental Congress recalls previous loan certificates because of British counterfeiting.
  • 1788 - Georgia is fourth state to ratify US constitution.
  • 1800 - Free black community of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, petitions US Congress to abolish slavery.
  • 1811 - US Senator Thomas Pickering is first senator censured (revealed confidential documents communicated by the President of the US).
  • 1842 - First US wire suspension bridge for general traffic opens in Pennsylvania.
  • 1861 - Colonel Charles Stone is put in charge of organizing District of Columbia militia.
  • 1861 - South Carolina seizes inactive Fort Johnson in Charleston Harbor.
  • 1863 - Battle of Murfreesboro (Stone's River) ends.
  • 1879 - The US government resumes specie payments for paper currency.
  • 1882 - Because of anti-monopoly laws, Standard Oil is organized as a trust.
  • 1890 - Record 19 foot 2 inch alligator shot in Louisiana by E A McIlhenny.

  • 1903 - US President Theodore Roosevelt shuts down post office in Indianola, Michigan, for refusing to accept its appointed postmistress because she is black.

  • 1920 - 10,000 Union and socialist organizers arrested (Palmer Raids).
