Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1994 - Microsoft announces plans to buy Intuit (maker of Quicken) for US$1.5 billion stock swap.
  • 1997 - DMA Design releases the Grand Theft Auto game for the PC in the UK.
  • 1998 - At the Microprocessor Forum, Advanced Micro Devices gives details of its K7 processor. Initial speed will be 500 MHz, with 200 MHz system bus, multiprocessing capability, and 512 kB to 8 MB secondary cache.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1931 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film The Spider and the Fly.
  • 1932 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Flowers and Trees for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1932 - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominates the film Mickey's Orphans for an Oscar Award in the category Short Subjects, Cartoons.
  • 1950 - The Donald Duck film Bee at the Beach is released.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the live-action short film The Emperor Penguins to theaters.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Fly with Von Drake with Ludwig von Drake. Scenes from the film Victory through Air Power are shown.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Return of the Big Cat, part two.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Feast of July to three theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and Montreal, Canada.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film The Scarlet Letter to theaters in the USA.
  • 1997 - Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella premieres at Mann's Chinese Theater, in Los Angeles.
  • 1998 - The Fox TV network airs the final Costello TV show.
  • 2000 - The NBC TV network airs the final Daddio TV show episode.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1962 - At the Riverside International Raceway in California, the SCCA Los Angeles Times Three-Hour Invitational Grand Prix race is held. 1963 model production Corvettes make their racing debut, as does the Ford-powered Cobra. Four Z06-equipped 327-ci 360-hp fuel-injected Corvettes with 36.5-gallon gas tanks are entered, but only one finishes.
    • Finishing 1st overall is the Mickey Thompson #119 black 1963 Corvette Z06, driven by Doug Hooper. He averages 84-mph over the 250-mile course.
    • The other Corvette drivers are Bob Bondurant (#614 silver), Dave MacDonald (#00 white), and Jerry Grant.
    • The 260-ci Cobra leads by about a mile after an hour of racing when its left-rear hub carrier breaks.

  • 1967 - David Zeigler buys a 1967 Corvette with L88 engine from Curtis Chevrolet in Washington, D.C.
  • 1989 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, the Valvoline Runoffs final races of the SCCA Club Racing series are held, over three days. Finishing 1st in GT-1 class is Morris Clement Jr. driving a Corvette.
  • 2018 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, USA, the Motul Petit Le Mans race is held, round 11 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 13th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner, Marcel Fassler, and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 8th in GT Le Mans class and 19th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen, Marcel Fassler, and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1937 - The German Government pledges to respect the neutrality and territorial integrity of Belgium.
  • 1942 - German Colonel General Alfred Jodl distributes classified copies of the Commando Order to 22 senior army officers, instructing that any captured Allied soldiers participating in Commando raids in Europe or Africa are to be execited.
  • 1943 - Italy declares war on Germany.
  • 1945 - France issues a postage stamp depicting the destruction of Oradour, June 1944.
  • 1989 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the HMS Royal Oak.
  • 1992 - Cocos Islands issues three postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of World War II.
  • 2004 - Niue issues five postage stamps marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Nintendo and Sony reach an agreement on a standard for CD-ROM players for a new video game system that can play Super NES cartridges and CD-ROMs. Nintendo will license all game software, and Sony will license, through Nintendo, all other software types.
  • 1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat Trilogy video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2003 - Nintendo releases the Kirby's Air Ride video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2004 - Video game Halo 2 is illegally released to the Internet prior to official release, in PAL format with French text.
  • 2009 - Majesco releases the A Boy and His Blob video game for the Nintendo Wii in the USA.
  • 2009 - Electronic Arts releases the Brutal Legend video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.
  • 2009 - Sony Computer Entertainment releases the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves video game for the PlayStation 3 in the USA.
  • 2017 - Bethesda Softworks releases The Evil Within 2 video game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1644 - Swedes defeat Danes at sea, in the Femern Belt.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1993 - British-based Cadbury Schweppes PLC completes a buy out of A & W Brands, for US$334 million.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2006 - The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the Medal of Bravery circulating 25c coin in Ottawa. Up to 20 million coins will be minted. The design was created by Cosme Saffioti.
  • 2012 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases to circulation the 2012 War of 1812 General Isaac Brock 25-cent coin, 12.5 million coins, half with red colored maple leaf, the other half without red color. The design was created by Bonnie Ross.

USA coin history:

  • 1884 - Adolph Weyl in Berlin, Germany, auctions an 1804 Draped Bust dollar to the Chapman brothers for $1000.
  • 2011 - (to October 16) At the ANA convention in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Heritage conducts the U.S. Coins Signature Auction. Some highlights:
    • 1854-O $20, AU-55 PCGS: $431,250;
    • 1864 $20, PR-65 Ultra Cameo NGC: $345,000.

Sports history:

  • 1903 - Pittsburgh Pirates beats Boston Americans 5 games to 3 in first World Series.
  • 1914 - Boston Braves sweep Philadelphia Athletics, first sweep in World Series history (World Series #11).
  • 1915 - Boston Red Sox beat Philadelphia Phillies, four games to one in 12th World Series.
  • 1921 - New York Giants beat New York Yankees, five games to three in 18th World Series.
  • 1947 - NHL All Star Game - All Stars beat Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • 1960 - Pittsburgh Pirates' Mazeroski's bottom of 9th lead off home run beats New York Yankees 10-9 in game 7 of 57th World Series.
  • 1971 - First baseball World Series night game (Pittsburgh Pirates 4 - Baltimore Orioles 3) (World Series #68).
  • 1982 - International Olympic Committee restores two gold medals from 1912 Olympics to Jim Thorpe.
  • 1982 - New Jersey Devils first short handed goal-Don Lever.
  • 1984 - Chicago Blackhawks' Bill Gardner scores on 10th penalty shot against New York Islanders.
  • 1984 - John Henry becomes first thoroughbred to win US$6 million.
  • 1986 - 25th New York, National League appearance in World Series (New York Mets versus Oakland Athletics) (World Series #83).
  • 1991 - Toronto Blue Jays' Cito Gaston is first manager ejected in a playoff game.
  • 1993 - The Philadelphia Phillies win the National League pennant by beating the Atlanta Braves in Game six of the NLCS, 6-3.
  • 2018 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, USA, the Motul Petit Le Mans race is held, round 11 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 #10 Cadillac DPi driven by Jordan Taylor, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Renger VanDer Zande.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 12th overall is the Porsche GT Team #911 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Fred Makowiecki, Patrick Pilet, and Nick Tandy.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 21st overall is the Scuderia Corsa #63 Ferrari 488 GT3 driven by Daniel Serra, Gunnar Jeannette, and Cooper MacNeil.

  • 2021 - At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL regular season game: Anaheim Ducks beats Winnipeg Jets by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, NHL regular season game: Edmonton Oilers beats Vancouver Canucks by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL regular season game: Colorado Avalanche beats Chicago Blackhawks by score 4-2.
  • 2021 - At Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., USA, NHL regular season game: Washington Capitals beats New York Rangers by score 5-1.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NHL regular season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Montreal Canadiens by score 2-1.

Space exploration history:

  • 1964 - Voskhod 1 crew returns.
  • 1969 - Soyuz 8 is launched.
  • 1978 - Tiros N, America's first third-generation weather satellite, is launched.
  • 1984 - STS 41-G mission lands at Kennedy Space Center.
  • 2021 - Blue Origin New Shepard capsule blasts off with William Shatner aboard. Oldest person into space, age 90.

USA history:

  • 1775 - The Continental Congress orders construction of a naval fleet (establishment of the Continental Navy).
  • 1792 - President George Washington lays cornerstone of the Executive Mansion (White House).
  • 1812 - Battle of Queenston Heights, Canada.
  • 1843 - B'nai B'rith founded in New York, USA.
  • 1845 - Texas ratifies a state constitution.
  • 1860 - First aerial photo taken in US (from a balloon), Boston, Massachusetts.
  • 1919 - Race riot at Elaine, Arkansas.
  • 1944 - US 1st Army begins battle of Aachen.
  • 1959 - In Hamlet, Indiana, USA a building is hit by a falling meteorite.
  • 1960 - Third US presidential debate with Richard Nixon in Hollywood and John Kennedy in New York.
  • 1962 - At the Riverside International Raceway in California, the Los Angeles Times Three-Hour Invitational Grand Prix race is held. 1963 model production Corvettes make their racing debut, as does the Ford-powered Cobra. Finishing 1st overall is the Mickey Thompson #119 black Corvette Z06, driven by Doug Hooper. He averages 84-mph over the 250-mile course. The 260-ci Cobra leads by about one mile after one hour of racing when its rear suspension fails.
  • 1969 - US President Richard Nixon puts America's nuclear forces on high alert.
  • 1978 - Tiros N, America's first third-generation weather satellite, is launched.
  • 1982 - The Ford Sierra automobile is launched in Europe. It replaces the Ford Cortina.
  • 1987 - First military use of trained dolphins (US Navy in Persian Gulf).
  • 1989 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunges 190.58 points, or 6.91 percent, to close at 2,569.26 most likely after the junk bond market collapses. This mini-crash becomes known as the Friday the 13th mini-crash.
  • 1999 - The United States Senate rejects ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
  • 2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounds 936.42 points, nearly doubling the largest daily point gain in history, bringing the index back above 9,000 points. Stocks worldwide add more than US$1.7 trillion in value, based on a record 9.3 percent gain in the MSCI world equity index.
  • 2021 - Blue Origin New Shepard capsule blasts off with William Shatner aboard. Oldest person into space, age 90.

  • 2008 - Britain, Germany, France and other European countries pledge more than 1 trillion euros (US$1.36 trillion) for bank guarantees and equity stakes.
  • 2008 - Iceland shut downs its stock market and abandons attempts to defend its currency, and requests financing from the International Monetary Fund.
  • 2008 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounds 936.42 points, nearly doubling the largest daily point gain in history, bringing the index back above 9,000 points. Stocks worldwide add more than US$1.7 trillion in value, based on a record 9.3 percent gain in the MSCI world equity index.
