Personal computer history:

  • 1987 - Microsoft announces Microsoft Windows 2.0, and Microsoft Windows/386, priced at US$195.
  • 1987 - Microsoft unveils the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software for Microsoft Windows 2.0, the first major application for Windows. Included is Microsoft Windows v2.01.
  • 1998 - Microsoft releases Visual J++ 6.0 Java delopment software. Price is US$549 for Professional Edition, US$109 for Standard Edition.
  • 2000 - Portugal issues a postage stamp of Snoopy on his dog house typing at a personal computer.
  • 2000 - Sony releases the Vaio PictureBook laptop computer in Japan, the first with a Transmeta Crusoe processor.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases Windows XP Service Pack 2 for retail sale.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases Virtual PC 7 software for the Apple Macintosh. The product emulates a Pentium processor, allowing the Microsoft Windows operating system and applications to run on the Macintosh. Price is US$249, including Windows XP Professional.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 24th Alice Comedy film, Alice Rattled by Rats.
  • 1927 - Warner Brothers releases The Jazz Singer, the first motion picture with sound.
  • 1963 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring The Horse Without a Head, part two.
  • 1968 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled Pacifically Peeking, with Moby Duck.
  • 1970 - In the case of the Sierra Club against the U.S. Forest Service over Disney's proposed Mineral King ski resort, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals agrees with the Sierra Club to let the injunction against commencing the project stand until the Supreme Court could make its ruling on the case.
  • 1974 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Return of the Big Cat, part one.
  • 1983 - Disney premieres the live-action feature film Never Cry Wolf in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 1984 - Disneyland striking workers are told they will be fired if they don't go back to work by the 10th.
  • 1989 - A new "Disneyland" marquee is installed at Disneyland.
  • 1989 - Buena Vista releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film An Innocent Man to theaters.
  • 1992 - Disney announces plans to build three resorts with over 4500 rooms, and a water theme park at Walt Disney World. The resorts will have sports, music, and wilderness themes.
  • 1993 - Premier Cruise Lines announces it is dropping the appearance of Disney characters from its cruise ships as of April 1, 1994.
  • 1995 - Buena Vista Pictures generally releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Dead Presidents to theaters in the USA.
  • 1995 - Disney releases the film One Hundred and One Dalmatians on laserdisc in Japan, for 4841 Yen.
  • 2002 - The A Bug's Land area opens at Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2002 - The Flik's Fun Fair attraction opens in the A Bug's Land area in Disney's California Adventure.
  • 2009 - Disney releases the animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on DVD and Blu-Ray. Price for "Diamond Edition" is US$39.99; price for "Limited Edition Collector's Set" is US$249.
  • 2014 - The Anna & Elsa's Boutique shop opens in the Downtown Disney District at Disneyland.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1977 - Chevrolet introduces the 1978 model Corvette.
  • 1999 - United Paramount Network airs the Seven Days TV show in the USA. At an exotic car rental shop, a poster of 15 Corvette models appears.
  • 2001 - Matt Alldredge opens the Precision Valley Corvette Museum in Springfield, Vermont, on weekends as a sneak preview prior to the grand opening.
  • 2001 - At the Road Atlanta Motor Sports Center in Braselton, Georgia, the Petit le Mans race is held, Round 8 (final) of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 6th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Andy Pilgrim, Kelly Collins, and Franck Fréon.
    • The Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell, is disqualified when a mechanic helps push the stopped car off the track, a violation of race rules.

  • 2001 - Standings at the end of the 2001 American Le Mans Series: GTS drivers championship: 3rd is Ron Fellows, 4th is Johnny O'Connell, 5th is (tie) Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins, 9th is Oliver Gavin, 11th is Franck Freon. GTS automobile manufacturer championship: 1st is Chevrolet. GTS team championship: 1st is Corvette Racing.
  • 2001 - In Houston, Texas, the Texaco/Havoline Houston Grand Prix race is held, Round 11 of the Trans-Am Series For the BFGoodrich Tires Cup.
    • Finishing 1st is the Justin Bell Motorsports Experience #40 Corvette, driven by Justin Bell.
    • Finishing 4th is the LG Motorsports / G2 Performance Parts #28 Corvette, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 7th is the Preformed Line Products #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 8th is the Banner Engineering #66 Corvette, driven by Leighton Reese.
    • Finishing 11th is the TDM Motorsports #15 Corvette, driven by Tomy Drissi.
    • Finishing 12th is the Cenweld Corp / McNichols #23 Corvette, driven by Bob Ruman.
    • In 23rd place, but not finishing the race, is the Stonier Transportation #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.

  • 2002 - At the Miami Street Circuit in Miami, Florida, the Grand Prix Americas race is held, round 10 of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Derhaag Motorsports #40 Corvette, driven by Justin Bell.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Preformed Line Products #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 4th is the Trenton Forging #02 Corvette, driven by Stuart Hayner. Hayner set a new race lap record.
    • Finishing 6th is the Tommy Bahama #88 Corvette, driven by Butch Leitzinger.

    • In 16th place, but not finishing the race, is the Stoptech #9 Corvette, driven by Mike Cronin, Jr.

  • 2007 - At the Road Atlanta racetrack in Braselton, Georgia, the Petit Le Mans race is held, round eleven of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in LMGT1 class and 9th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin, Max Papis, and Olivier Beretta.
    • The Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6.R driven by Johnny O'Connell, Ron Fellows, and Jan Magnussen is knocked out early in an accident.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Australia agrees to dispatch one cruiser and five destroyers for British use in Singapore.
  • 1939 - Last Polish troops cease fighting. German losses in Poland: about 8100 dead, 28,000 wounded, 5100 missing, 217 tanks destroyed, 564 planes destroyed or damaged beyond repair; Polish lost 433 aircraft.
  • 1939 - Adolf Hitler announces a peace plan in the Reichstag.
  • 1941 - A large pocket of about 100,000 Soviet forces surrender near Kharkov and the Donets river.
  • 1942 - German Colonel-General Friedrich Paulus, commander of the 6th Army at Stalingrad, calls a cease to the attack on the city due to losses in men and supplies.
  • 1942 - (evening) Over 200 British bombers attack Osnabrück, Germany.
  • 1943 - Canadian tanks force Germans to withdraw from Termoli, Italy.
  • 1944 - (0525 hours) The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division begins Operation Switchback, an attack on the Scheldt's southern shore, crossing the Leopold Canal in Belgium. The crossing is a diversion to the main amphibious crossing to take place at the Breskens Pocket.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes a daytime air raid on oil targets at Sterkrade and Scholven/Buer, Germany, causing heavy damage.
  • 1944 - Soviet and Czechoslovakian forces make their way through Dukla pass into Slovakia.
  • 1944 - (evening) 523 British and Canadian bombers attack Dortmund, Germany, inflicting great devastation. 293 Canadian planes take part in this mission, the greatest number of any night of the war.

Video game history:

  • 1990 - Sega launches the Game Gear handheld video game system in Japan. Price is 19800 yean. Launch titles include Columns, Pengo, Super Monaco GP.
  • 1998 - At the Sega New Challenge Conference in Tokyo, Sega debuts the Dreamcast video game system.
  • 1999 - United Paramount Network airs the Seven Days TV show in the USA. The episode involves a video game player remotely controlling a live missile aimed at the US Pentagon building. A few arcade video game machines appear at a nightclub. A brief scene takes place in a videogame arcade, showing a wrestling game.
  • 2004 - (to October 10) At the Bill Graham Auditorium in San Francisco, California, the World Cyber Games 2004 Grand Final championship games are held, over five days. 30,000 spectators watch about 700 gamers in teams from 59 countries compete for $400,000 in prize money. Two console games are Halo and Project Gotham Racing 2 for the Xbox. The Netherlands team wins the most points. The Korean team wins the most medals.
  • 2005 - In Australia, the High Court of Australia rules that it is legal to install modification chips in a PlayStation 2 that allow the console to play imported or copied games. Sony Computer Entertainment originally filed a lawsuit against Sydney retailer Eddy Stevens in 2001 for selling unauthorized copies of games, and selling and installing modification chips for the PlayStation 2.
  • 2006 - Sierra releases the Scarface: The World is Yours video game for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1630 - King Gustav Adolf withdraws from near Rostock to Ribnitz.
  • 1980 - Swedish armed forces abandon further searching for the foreign submarine in its coastal waters, resuming routine patrols.

USA coin history:

  • 1917 - The US Trading with the Enemy Act becomes law, giving the US President authority to ban holding of gold and silver coins and other objects.
  • 2003 - Coin Values magazine debuts.

Sports history:

  • 1908 - New York Yankees lose 100th game of the year (will go 51-103 for season).
  • 1910 - Boston Braves beat Philadelphia Phillies 20-7.
  • 1923 - First National League unassisted baseball triple play (Ernie Padgett, Boston Braves against Philadelphia Phillies).
  • 1926 - Babe Ruth hits three home runs in a World Series game, New York Yankees beat Saint Louis Cardinals 10-5 (World Series #23).
  • 1936 - New York Yankees beat New York Giants four games to two in 33rd World Series.
  • 1941 - New York Yankees beat Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 1, in 38th World Series.
  • 1947 - New York Yankees beat Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 3, in 44th World Series.
  • 1959 - Single game World Series (World Series #56) attendance record set (92,706 in Los Angeles).
  • 1963 - Los Angeles Dodgers sweep New York Yankees in 60th World Series.
  • 1966 - Baltimore Orioles' player Jim Palmer, 20, is youngest to pitch a World Series shutout (World Series #63).
  • 1977 - New York Yankees win American League pennant by rallying for three runs in 9th to beat Kansas City Royals 5-3 in 5th and deciding playoff game.
  • 1978 - Kansas City Royals' George Brett hits three home runs, New York Yankees win championship game 3, 6-5.
  • 1979 - Harry Drake sets long distance footbow shot record of 2,006 yards 1 foot 9 inches.
  • 1982 - Auburn's Al Del Greco kicks six field goals.
  • 1983 - Buffalo Bills' quarterback Joe Ferguson passes 419 yards with five touchdowns.
  • 1983 - New York Islander's Mike Bossy's earns 25th career hat trick.
  • 1983 - New York Jets announce they are leaving Shea Stadium for the Meadowlands Coliseum.
  • 1985 - Marita Koch of Germany sets 400m women's record (47.6) in Australia.
  • 1985 - New York Yankees' Phil Niekro becomes the 18th pitcher to win 300 games and also at 46 becomes the oldest to pitch a shut-out beating Toronto Blue Jays 8-0.
  • 1988 - Oakland Athletics sweep Boston Red Sox in four games for American League pennant.
  • 1991 - New York Mets' David Cone ties National League record by striking out 19 Philadelphia Phillies players.
  • 1993 - After nine years of playing in the NBA, Michael Jordan retires from basketball.
  • 2001 - The Seattle Mariners tie the 1906 Chicago Cubs with 116 wins in a single season for winningest team in major league history.
  • 2021 - (to October 10) The 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals is held in Italy, and is won by France. The games were originally scheduled for 2-6 June 2021, but were moved following the rescheduling of UEFA Euro 2020 to June and July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2021 - At Honda Center in Anaheim, California, USA, NHL pre-season game: Los Angeles Kings beats Anaheim Ducks by score 6-3.
  • 2021 - At Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Winnipeg Jets beats Calgary Flames by score 3-2.
  • 2021 - At Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, USA, NHL pre-season game: New York Rangers beats New Jersey Devils by score 6-2.
  • 2021 - At TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, NHL pre-season game: Washington Capitals beats Boston Bruins by score 4-3.
  • 2021 - At Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, USA, NHL pre-season game: Columbus Blue Jackets beats Detroit Red Wings by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, USA, National Football League regular season game: Indianapolis Colts beats Denver Broncos by score 12-9.

Space exploration history:

  • 1990 - US 67th manned space mission STS 41 (Discovery 11) launches into orbit.
  • 1995 - Michael Mayor and Didier Queloz announce the discovery of 51 Pegasi b, the first confirmed Extrasolar planet.
  • 2008 - NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft makes its second of three flybys of Mercury, decreasing the velocity for orbital insertion on March 18, 2011.

USA history:
