Personal computer history:

  • 1992 - IBM Personal Computer introduces the IBM ThinkPad line of laptop computers. The ThinkPad 300 (made by Zenith Data Systems) features a 25 MHz 386SL processor. The ThinkPad 700 features monochrome 9.5-inch display, 25 MHz 486SLC, 6.5 pounds weight, nickel-metal-hydride battery good for about 3.75 hours, 80/120 hard drive, 4 MB RAM. The ThinkPad 700C features 25 MHz 486SLC, 7.5 pounds weight, Microchannel bus, 10.3-in TFT active-matrix VGA color, nickel-metal-hydride battery good for about 2-3 hours use, DOS 5.0, price about US$4000, TrackPoint II integrated pointing device, 4 MB RAM, removable 120 MB hard drive, size is 11.5 x 8.25 x 2.25 inches. The ThinkPad 700T was previously called ThinkPad.
  • 1999 - The Microprocessor Forum is held in San Jose, California.
  • 1999 - At the Microprocessor Forum, Advanced Micro Devices gives first details of its own 64-bit processor, code-named Sledgehammer, backward-compatible with Intel 32-bit x86 architecture processors.
  • 2002 - In the ten years since introducing the first ThinkPad computer, IBM has sold 15 million units.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1935 - The Silly Symphony film Music Land is released to theaters. Also known as Musicland.
  • 1949 - RKO Radio Pictures releases Disney's animated feature film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad to theaters. The film is also known as simply Ichabod and Mr. Toad. The film was originally titled Two Fabulous Characters, as it comprises two half hour sequences: Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willow, and Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Tiburon, Sardinia, Morocco, and Icebreakers.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the animated feature film Music Land, comprised of four shorts from Make Mine Music and five from Melody Time.
  • 1955 - The Disneyland Hotel opens, on a 60-acre site next to Disneyland.
  • 1966 - Buena Vista releases Disney's live-action feature film The Fighting Prince of Donegal to theaters. The film is based on the book Red Hugh, Prince of Donegal by Robert T. Reilly.
  • 1975 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring The Secret of the Pond, part one.
  • 1977 - Kikkoman begins sponsering the Adventureland Veranda restaurant in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1986 - The ABC TV network airs The Disney Sunday Movie, entitled Little Spies.
  • 1990 - Disney re-releases the film Fantasia to theaters, based on a two-year restoration from original film negatives, with the original soundtrack.
  • 1992 - The Walt Disney Story attraction in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1997 - The ABC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring the two-hour movie Toothless.
  • 1997 - Disney releases the film Washington Square in New York City.
  • 2001 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Max Keeble's Big Move to theaters in the USA.
  • 2004 - Walt Disney Home Entertainment releases the film Aladdin on DVD in the US. Price is US$29.99.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1953 - Maurice Olley outlines his goals for the Corvette in a paper presented to the Society of Automotive Engineers.
  • 1958 - In Virginia, the SCCA holds a National car race.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 1st overall is the #69 Corvette driven by Frank Dominianni.
    • Finishing 2nd in B-Production class and 16th overall is the #181 Corvette driven by Alvin Forsyth.

  • 1965 - The second Mako Shark II show car, a running version, is shown to the automotive press at the GM Tech Center in Michigan. This version is fully drivable, with a 427-ci engine.
  • 2001 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, the Speedvision World Challenge GT - Round 9 race is held.
    • Finishing 4th is the KAC Technologies #15 Corvette C5, driven by Eric Curran.
    • Finishing 10th is the Grand Sport Racing / Xtreme Wheelz #04 Corvette C5, driven by Andy Lally.
    • Finishing 14th is the Aggregate Industries / McClure Concrete #73 Corvette C5, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 16th is the Les Stanford Chevrolet / Pirate Racing #75 Corvette ZR1, driven by Bill Cooper.
    • In 24th place, but not finishing the race, is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette C5, driven by David Farmer.
    • In 26th place, but not finishing the race, is the Valvoline / Les Stanford / Pirate Racing #01 Corvette C5, driven by Bobby Sak.

  • 2002 - At the Grand Prix Americas raceway in Miami, Florida, the Cadillac American Le Mans Challenge race is held, round nine of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 9th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins.

  • 2003 - At the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, the 3 Hours of VIR race is held, round nine of the Grand-Am Cup series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GSI class and 2nd overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette Z06, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 8th in GSI class and 41st overall is the Gilbert Racing #5 Corvette, driven by James McAndrew and Henry Gilbert.
    • Finishing 11th in GSII class and 56th overall is the Powell Motorsport #02 Corvette Z06, driven by Mike Weinberg and Don Knowles.

  • 2003 - At the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, the VIR 400 race is held, round eleven of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS and 10th overall is the SL Motorsports #06 Corvette, driven by Paul Alderman, Steve Lisa, and David Rosenblum.
    • Finishing 3rd in GTS and 18th overall is the Derhaag Motorsports #40 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg and Kenny Wilden.

  • 2007 - At the Road Atlanta racetrack in Braselton, Georgia, the Petit Le Mans race is held, round nine of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 12th is the Foster Motorsports #17 Corvette driven by Rob Foster.
    • In 15th place, but not finishing the race, is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette driven by Tony Gaples.
    • In 16th place, but not finishing the race, is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette, driven by Sonny Whelen.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Czechoslovakian President Benes resigns.
  • 1939 - German pocket-battleship Admiral Graf Spee sinks Newton Beach east of Ascension Island.
  • 1939 - In Moscow, Latvia signs a Pact of Mutual Assistance with the Soviet Union, granting Soviet bases at Libau and Windau.
  • 1941 - Soviet Premier Josef Stalin receives a radio message from spy Richard Sorge in Tokyo, Japan, that Japan would go to war with the United States soon. Stalin orders twelve divisions (1700 tanks, 1500 planes, 2,500,000 men) from eastern Siberia and Outer Mongolia to come to the defense of Moscow.
  • 1942 - (evening) 257 British bombers attack Aachen, Germany. Due to bad weather, many bombs are dropped on nearby Lutterade, Holland.
  • 1943 - US carriers Lexington, Essex, Yorktown, Cowpens, Independence, and Belleau Wood commence two days of air strikes on Wake Island.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes a daytime air raid on Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Results are poor due to heavy cloud cover.
  • 1944 - (evening) 555 British bombers attack the town and railways at Saarbrüken, Germany.
  • 1945 - Dr. Leonardo Conti, former chief of health in Germany, hangs himself in Nuremberg jail. He had authorized a variety of experiments involving killing humans to study the effects of bacteria and poisons.
  • 1980 - Japanese businessman Ryoichi Sasakawa offers to trade salvage rights to the sunken Russian cruiser Admiral Nakhimov to the Soviet Union in exchange for the return to Japan of the Kurile island chain the southern half of Sakhalin. The ship was sunk in 1905 by a Japanese torpedo. The Soviet chargé d'affaires demands the Japanese Government acknowledge Soviet ownership of the ship and contents.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Nintendo releases the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the Super NES in the US.
  • 2000 - Capcom releases the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike video game for the Dreamcast in the US.
  • 2003 - Microsoft releases a wireless network adapter for the Xbox. Price is US$140.
  • 2004 - Activision releases the Tony Hawk's Underground 2: World Destruction Tour video game for the PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, and Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - Vivendi Universal Games releases the Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in the US.
  • 2004 - EA Sports releases the NBA Live 2005 video game for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2010 - Konami releases the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2010 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2011 - Electronic Arts releases the Crysis video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1632 - Würzburg is captured by the Swedish army. The garrison of 1500 is killed. Great riches are taken; the cathedral library is sent to Uppsala.
  • 1981 - The United States awards an Honorary Citizenship to Raoul Wallenberg.
  • 1982 - Naval forces trap an unidentified submarine in Horsfjarden Bay, and drop depth charges in an effort to force it to surface.

USA coin history:

  • 1967 - Five masked men rob Willis H. du Pont at gunpoint at his house in Cocoanut Grove, Florida. They take $1.5 million in coins, including a 1787 Brasher doubloon, the Linderman specimen of the US 1804 Type III Proof silver dollar, the Davis specimen of the 1866 no motto dollar, an 1866 no motto quarter dollar, an 1866 no motto half dollar, an 1827 quarter dollar, and an 1875 $3.
  • 2010 - The Philadelphia Mint begins production of the 2010 Mount Hood National Forest quarter dollar for circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1906 - Henry Mathewson (New York Giants' pitcher) walks 14 men.
  • 1907 - Canadian Interprovincial Rugby Football Union plays first game (Montreal 17, Toronto 8).
  • 1907 - Philadelphia Athletics' pitcher Rube Vickers no-hits Washington Senators, 4-0 in five-inning game.
  • 1912 - Billy Mallett of Hamilton Tigers kicks 9 singles in a game.
  • 1912 - New York Yankees win final game at Hilltop stadium.
  • 1921 - First World Series radio broadcast, New York Yankees beat New York Giants 3-0 (World Series #18).
  • 1922 - New York Yankees and New York Giants play an infamous 3-3 tie World Series game (World Series #19).
  • 1941 - Mickey Owens drops a third strike, Tom Hendrick reaches first safely, would have been the last out, instead New York Yankees score 4 and win 7-4.
  • 1942 - Saint Louis Cardinals beat New York Yankees, 4 games to 1, in 39th World Series.
  • 1953 - New York Yankees break own record with 5th consecutive World Series win - Billy Martin's 12 hits set record (World Series #50).
  • 1956 - Yogi Berra becomes the fourth New York Yankees' player to hit a World Series Grand Slam (World Series #53).
  • 1969 - Tom Dempsey of New Orleans Saints kicks 55-yard field goal.
  • 1980 - Kansas City Royals' Willie Wilson establishes a major league record for the most at-bats in a season with 705.
  • 1980 - New York Yankees set American League attendance mark at 2,627,417.
  • 1982 - New Jersey Devils first game, ties Pittsburgh Penguins 3-3 at the Meadowlands Coliseum.
  • 1985 - Louisiana's Grambling Tigers, coached by Eddie Robinson, win record 324th football game.
  • 1990 - Death of Peter Taylor, English football player and manager (born 1928).
  • 2001 - The Atlanta Braves defeat the Florida Marlins 20-3 to clinch the National League East title and becomes the first team in professional sports to win 10 consecutive division titles.
  • 2001 - Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants breaks the single season home run record with his 71st and 72nd home runs of the year. Both are off pitcher Chan Ho Park of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • 2001 - The Seattle Mariners break the Major League Baseball record for wins in a season set by the 1998 New York Yankees, winning their 115th game, defeating the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field. The Mariners finish the season 116-46.
  • 2021 - At crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA, NHL pre-season game: Arizona Coyotes beats Los Angeles Kings by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Seattle Kraken beats Vancouver Canucks by score 4-0.
  • 2021 - At Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, USA, NHL pre-season game: Vegas Golden Knights beats Colorado Avalanche by score 7-4.
  • 2021 - At American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA, NHL pre-season game: Dallas Stars beats Saint Louis Blues by score 3-1.
  • 2021 - At Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NHL pre-season game: Toronto Maple Leafs beats Montreal Canadiens by score 6-2.

Space exploration history:

  • 1923 - Edwin Hubble identifies Cepheid variable star.
  • 1984 - 13th Space Shuttle Mission (41-G) - Challenger 6 - launched. Marc Garneau becomes the first Canadian in space.
  • 2021 - Roscosmos launches the Soyuz MS-19 mission, which carries an Expedition 66 crewmember and two Channel One Russia personnel to the International Space Station. The two Channel One crew will perform principal photography on the film Vyzov aboard the station.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1864 - Most of Calcutta destroyed by cyclone (approx 60,000 die).
  • 1954 - Hurricane Hazel hits Eastern US.

USA history:

  • 1813 - Battle of the Thames in Canada; Americans defeat British.
  • 1864 - Battle of Allatoona, one-third of US troops die repulsing the South.
  • 1892 - Dalton Gang ends in shoot-out in Coffeyville, Kansas bank holdup.
  • 1931 - First nonstop transpacific flight, Japan to Washington (Herndon and Pangborn).
  • 1941 - Soviet Premier Josef Stalin receives a radio message from spy Richard Sorge in Tokyo, Japan, that Japan would go to war with the United States soon.   • 2008 - Animated TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars debuts in the USA.
  • 2020 - US President Donald Trump returns to the White House from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, recovering from Covid-19.
