Personal computer history:

  • 1991 - Apple Computer, Motorola, and IBM officially sign an accord on technology sharing. Apple and IBM will jointly develop the PowerOpen Specification, based on IBM's AIX operating system. The Taligent company will be established to develop an operating system based on Apple Computer's project Pink.
  • 1991 - Electronic Arts, Time Warner, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers announce a joint venture for creating multimedia products. The new company is called San Mateo Software Group.
  • 1996 - Umax announces the SuperMac S900DP/180 Mac-compatible computer. It features dual 180 MHz PowerPC 604e processors, 512 kB Level 2 cache, 32 MB RAM, 4 MB video RAM, 128-bit IMS graphics accelerator, 8X CD-ROM drive, 2.1 GB hard drive, six PCI card slots, five drive bays, Ethernet connectors. Price is US$4695.
  • 1998 - Casio introduces the Cassiopeia E-11 handheld computer. It features backlit LCD display, 8 MB memory, 4 MB ROM, serial port, Windows CE 2.0, microphone, speaker, and docking cradle. Price is US$399.
  • 2000 - Corel announces a technology partnership with Microsoft. Microsoft will purchase about US$135 million shares of Corel stock, giving it about 25% ownership in the company. In return, Corel will integrate its software with the Internet, in line with Microsoft's .NET strategy.
  • 2001 - Intel introduces the 1.2 GHz Celeron processor. It features 16 kB Level 1 data cache, 16 kB Level 1 instruction cache, 256 kB Level 2 cache, 100 MHz system bus, MMX and SSE instructions, 64 GB address space. It incorporates 44 million transistors in a 0.13-micron process. Code-name during development was Tualatin. Price is US$103 in 1000-unit quantities.
  • 2002 - Sony Electronics introduces the Sony Clié PEG-NX70V handheld computer. It features 802.11b wireless LAN card slot, voice recorder, digital camera, Palm OS 5.0, 16 MB RAM, 16 MB ROM, Memory Stick expansion slot, 65,536-color TFT 320x480 pixel display, 200 MHz processor, QWERTY keyboard, Graffiti writing area, digital audio/video player. Price is US$599.99; size is 5.5x2.9x0.7 inches.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1953 - Disney releases the animated film Football Now and Then to theaters.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, featuring the first "Saga of Andy Burnett" episode, Andy's Initiation.
  • 1959 - The Rainbow Ridge Pack Mules attraction at Disneyland closes for re-modelling.
  • 1959 - The ABC TV network airs the Walt Disney Presents TV show, featuring Moochie of the Little League, part one.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Savage Sam, part one.
  • 1971 - The Admiral Joe Fowler Riverboat begins operation in Frontierland in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1981 - The live stage show Disney World is Your World begins performances on the Tomorrowland Stage in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1987 - The Walt Disney Company debuts Disney Dollars in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World. The same $1 and $5 bills are used as in Disneyland.
  • 1989 - The Disney channel begins airing Teen Angel Returns on the Mickey Mouse Club.
  • 1992 - The California Court of Appeals upholds a court decision of 1988 awarding Peggy Lee US$3.2 million for her role in the film Lady and the Tramp. The amount includes royalties from sales of videotapes, and damages for breach of contract.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film The Mighty Ducks to theaters.
  • 1994 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. This episode contains dozens of Disney theme park and film references:
    • the episode title "Itchy & Scratchy Land" (Disneyland),
    • the theme park tag line "The Violentest Place on Earth" (The Happiest Place on Earth),
    • "Parents Island" (Pleasure Island),

  • 1995 - Grenada issues eight postage stamps depicting scenes from Mickey's High Sea Adventure.
  • 1995 - Grenada Grenadines issues eight postage stamps depicting various Disney characters seeking pirate treasure.
  • 1996 - The Buy the Book shop opens on New York Street at Disney-MGM Studios at Walt Disney World. Formerly The Costume Shop.
  • 2001 - The ABC TV network premieres the Bob Patterson TV show.
  • 2005 - (to October 6) Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper host the Fifth Annual Film Festival At Sea aboard the Disney Wonder.
  • 2007 - The ABC TV network premieres the Cavemen series.
  • 2008 - Carolwood Records is created as part of the Disney Music Group, and located in Nashville, Tennessee.
  • 2008 - Disney releases the film Beverly Hills Chihuahua to theaters in Australia.
  • 2010 - Last live stage performance of High School Musical 3: Senior Year in Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - At Bridgehampton, a car race is held for B-Production and C-Production cars.
    • Finishing 1st in B-Production class and 1st overall is Fred Windridge in a Corvette.
    • Finishing 2nd in B-Production class and 2nd overall is Bark Henry in a Corvette.

  • 1973 - The National Broadcasting Company airs the first regular episode of The Magician on TV in the USA. Episode title is "The Manhunter". The lead character drives a white 1973 Corvette coupe in each episode of the show.
  • 1975 - Chevrolet introduces the 1976 model Corvette.
  • 1998 - Paramount Pictures releases the film A Night at the Roxbury to theaters in the USA and Canada. A 1956/57 Arctic Blue/silver Corvette model appears on a shelf.
  • 2000 - Gambia issues a postage stamp depicting Chevrolet's CERV III vehicle.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill orders the planning of a British invasion of Norway.
  • 1942 - (evening) British bombers attack Krefeld.
  • 1944 - British bombers drop leaflets on Walcheren island, warning of imminent flooding from breaching walls.
  • 1991 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the siege of Moscow.
  • 2000 - Tristan da Cunha issues a postage stamp depicting Winston Churchill giving a VE Day broadcast, 1945.

Video game history:

  • 2012 - 2K Games releases the NBA 2K13 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 2001 - The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland issues six postage stamps marking the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prizes.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1939 - Thomas Shingles begins work at the Royal Canadian Mint.

USA coin history:

  • 1908 - William Woodin purchases 1907 Saint-Gaudens, Rolled Edge, With Periods $10 gold coin from US Mint.

Sports history:

  • 1907 - Philadelphia Phillies' Eddie Grant goes 7 for 7 in a doubleheader.
  • 1908 - Addie Joss' perfect pitching game stops Ed Walsh 1-0 who had won 40 baseball games in a row.
  • 1913 - Philadelphia Phillies beat New York Giants two games out of three in a tripleheader.
  • 1916 - Grover Cleveland Alexander records his 16th shutout of the year.
  • 1920 - Cincinnati Reds beat Pittsburgh Pirates two games out of three in a tripleheader.
  • 1926 - Bert Gibb of Hamilton Tigers kicks 9 singles in a NFL football game.
  • 1932 - New York Yankees sweep Chicago Cubs in 29th World Series.
  • 1932 - Boston Braves play first NFL game, lose 14-0.
  • 1936 - Tony Lazzeri becomes the first New York Yankees' player to hit a World Series (World Series #33) grand slam.
  • 1938 - Cleveland Indians' Bob Feller strikes out 18 Detroit Tigers' players.
  • 1938 - Detroit Tigers' Chester Laabs strikes out five times in a game.
  • 1947 - Yogi Berra becomes first to pinch hit a World Series (World Series #44) homer.
  • 1949 - Saint Louis Browns use nine pitchers, lose to Boston White Sox 4-3.
  • 1949 - New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, tied for first place, play the final game of the season. New York Yankees win 5-3 and clinch pennant #16.
  • 1950 - Bob Shaw of the Chicago Cardinals sets NFL record with five touchdown catches.
  • 1950 - Chicago Cardinals' Jim Hardy passes for six touchdowns versus Baltimore Colts (55-13).
  • 1953 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Carl Erskine strikes out 14 New York Yankees in the 50th World Series.
  • 1954 - New York Giants sweep Cleveland Indians, in 51st World Series.
  • 1957 - New York Yankees appear in their 26th World Series (World Series #54).
  • 1962 - San Francisco and Los Angeles play a 4-hour, 18-minute nine-inning game.
  • 1964 - Philadelphia Phillies tie major league record with season's third triple play (Cincinnati Reds).
  • 1965 - Philadelphia Phillies' Chris Short strikes-out 18 New York Mets.
  • 1966 - Two perfect game pitchers face each other (Bunning versus Koufax).
  • 1968 - Bob Gibson sets a World Series record of 17 strikeouts (World Series #65).
  • 1969 - Seattle Pilots play last game in Seattle, Washington, defeated by the Oakland Athletics' 3-1 for their 98th loss of year. The American League's newest franchise attracts only 677, 944 fans for the season and will play in Milwaukee as the Brewers next season.
  • 1970 - Billy Martin named manager of the Detroit Tigers.
  • 1970 - Plane carrying Wichita State University football team crashes killing 30.
  • 1972 - Montreal Expos' Bill Stoneman pitches second no-hitter, beats New York Mets, 7-0.
  • 1972 - Ron Johnson becomes first New York Giants' player to score four touchdowns (vs Philadelphia Eagles).
  • 1978 - The New York Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 at Fenway Park to clinch the American League East after being 14 games out of first place only two months earlier.
  • 1980 - Larry Holmes retains WBC heavweight title defeating Muhammad Ali.
  • 2009 - The International Olympic Committee in Copenhagen votes 66-32 for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over Madrid, Spain. Chicago, Illinois was eliminated on the first ballot, and Tokyo, Japan was eliminated on the second ballot.
  • 2021 - At accesso ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington, USA, NHL pre-season game: Calgary Flames beats Seattle Kraken by score 4-1.
  • 2021 - At Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, Missouri, USA, NHL pre-season game: Chicago Blackhawks beats Saint Louis Blues by score 5-1.

  • 2005 - A shipwreck in Lake George, New York kills 20 people.
  • 2006 - Charles Carl Roberts IV, a 32-year-old milk-truck driver, kills five female students at an Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania before shooting himself.
  • 2008 - The U.S. Senate votes 74-to-25 to endorse a revised US$700 billion bank bailout plan. It involves the Treasury buying bad loans from institutions. The plan, rejected by the House earlier, was revised to include a tax cut and extended federal protection for bank deposits.
  • 2020 - US President Donald Trump announces he has tested positive for Covid-19.
