The colours were inspired from the Merkið (flag) and yellow/gold was added. The new Coat of Arms depicts a Ram on a blue shield ready to defend. It can be used by the Government Ministries and by Faroese embassies, but some still use older versions of the Coat of Arms.

  • 2008 - Death of Pedro Zaragoza Orts, mayor of Benidorm (1950-67), transformed the town to a tourist resort, at age 85.
  • 2009 - Israel's parliament swears in Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister and approves the new coalition cabinet by 69 votes to 45.
  • 2009 - Albania and Croatia join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  • 2010 - German carmaker Daimler pleads guilty to corruption in the US and will pay US$185 million. The company paid tens of millions of dollars in bribes to foreign government officials in at least 22 countries between 1998 and 2008.
  • 2010 - India launches a new census in which every person aged over 15 will be photographed and fingerprinted to create a biometric national database, which will then be used for national identity cards.
