  • Antony Wheeler dies of accidental hanging while playing Judas in a Greek production of Jesus Christ Superstar. [467]

  • Death of John Kendrew, British molecular biologist, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (born 1917). [18]

  • Death of Brandon Tartikoff at age 48 of Hodgkin's Disease; NBC TV executive (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Cheers, Miami Vice, The Golden Girls, St. Elsewhere, Night Court, Highway to Heaven, Matlock, Empty Nest). [457]

  • Diana, Princess of Wales, is taken to hospital after a car crash shortly after midnight in the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris. She is pronounced dead at 4:00 a.m. that morning.
