The half cent was authorized by Congress to be coined April 2, 1792. The first coin depicts Liberty facing left, with flowing hair.

1794-97


The next coins depict Liberty facing right, with a cap on a pole.

1800-08


The draped bust of Liberty now includes a hair ribbon.

1809-35


This bust of Liberty faces left, with curly hair and "LIBERTY" hair band, and 13 stars.

1840-57


The final half cent design has much less hair, and stars evenly spaced.
