Here are the men of Island Thyme (aka the Not-For-Joes) doing a hankey dance from Upton on Severn. It's often hard to distinguish the Not-For-Joes from the background. This is because the kit (costume), including the black face, is a disguise intended to protect the identity of the dancers. We wouldn't want our friends and neighbours to know who we are! Why? Well, some say because of the magic - the dance is tied to the turning of the season and successful procreation. Others say it's because of the conduct of the dancers (check with Norman Stanfield of the Vancouver Morris Men for thoughts about morris and misrule).
