West-Coaster Water Pail

Built like the wood pails used so commonly a century ago. This pail is held together only by the force of the bands around the sides. There is NO glue. Most usually the bands were made of thin steel, and sometimes of brass, copper, leather, thin wood, or cord. I have chosen to make these of a strong waxed cord wound to make bands slightly more than an inch wide. By doing this there is no staining of the wood by inevitable corrosion of the metal, and especially if used in sea water, the bands will last much longer. As well this makes the pail ideal for use in a Sauna. Metal bands would become very hot in the sauna and if one should brush against the metal would likely get burned, but not so with cord. This coopered pail is 10 1/2 inches tall to the rim and 11 inches wide.

If you wish I can make the pail using either a waxed sisal cord, as I used in the "Alias Grace" television miniseries at no extra charge, or a blackened riveted steel band for an extra charge of $20.00.  Please note on the order form if you desire this change.

I also make two larger sizes of pails which look almost the same. One holds 11 litres, (two and a half gallons), and the other holds 14 litres, (three gallons). The 11 litre pail is 12 inches tall to the rim and 12 inches across. The larger 14 litre pail is 12 inches tall and 13 and a half inches across the top. 

This is available in several different types of wood. Red Cedar is often used in a Sauna, for the aroma given off, most noticeably with warm water. Maple or Alder would usually be used for drinking water. For dry goods such as kindling by the fireplace or for towels in the bathroom a wood which matches the decor of the room is nice. I usually have Yellow Cedar and other woods as well, please ask.
