In the 21st Century . . .

By June

As internet services progress technologically, a big problem is occurring in the motion picture industry.  The main problem is computer downloading services that download files such as movies, songs, pictures etc…  Using a downloading service, people can download movies or songs freely, so people do not have to go to a theater or buy CDs.  However, there are 3 serious problems:  downloading movies creates economic stagnation for the motion picture industry, reduces movie-making budgets which prevents producers from making their movies, and finally, violates the rights of producers to protect their movies, thus, producers lose their desire to make films.

My first point is that if people download movies, fewer people will go to the movies, which will result in the motion picture industry having an economic slump.  When people go to a theater to watch a movie, the ticket sales are recorded. If audience attendance is low, future productions do not get enough money to cover what they spent and production companies will be bankrupted.

My second point is that if people download movies and producers lose film-making funding, the movies which people see will be less spectacular.  To make a film, productions need money for buying scenery and props, paying for actors or actresses, or for special effects.  Therefore, productions have to consider the production costs.  However, production companies cannot spend a lot of money to produce a film due to a lack of money caused by low audience attendance. As a result, people will not be able to see expensive movies such as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings.

My third point is that because people are downloading movies, producers lose their passion, so the quality of movies is getting worse. And producers do not know how popular their movies really are because people see the movie using a downloading service.  As well, even though producers have a right to protect their movie, they cannot do anything to protect their movie because of a lot of downloading sites and P2P services.  Anybody with a computer and a modem can access a downloading service.  As well, they can even watch newly released movies.  Therefore, theaters lose money and movie-makers lose profit as well.  As a result, producers lose their desire.  The main purpose of making films is to give pleasure to the audience, but by using a downloading service, people disrespect producers and also absorb their passion.

In conclusion, people should remember these 3 points before downloading a movie because  downloading movies creates economic problems for the motion picture industry causing fewer spectacular movies to be made, and film makers to lose their passion to make films, thus destroying the motion picture industry.
