Awakening
To Duality
Three
Courses In Self/Other Awareness
Traditional religions as well as the New Age movement have led people
to believe that the proof and measure of spirituality is found in
the way we manage the various kinds of relationships we have in our
lives. It does not matter if we are dealing with a God or gods, with
our neighbor of our enemy, with our lover or our environment, it is
our pattern to look for spirituality in the attitudes and behaviors
that make up our different relationships. In this sense, we can say
that spirituality is built upon duality. The spiritual life is found
in the space that separates and connects me and you, self and other.
The
realization that spirituality demands the existence of a dualistic
world becomes self-evident if we look at some of the characteristics
associated with people we label spiritual. We believe that such people
are able to look at the world and separate good from evil, right from
wrong. People are said to be spiritual if they achieve harmony and
balance between themselves and the world. Still others are given this
label if they adhere to a spiritual path, if they remain true to themselves
in spite of great costs and the temptations of the external world.
Our image of a spiritual person assumes that the evidence and degree
of spirituality is found in the relationship that exists between self
and other.
Awakening
to Duality is a program that offers an intellectual and experiential
examination of the assumption that duality and spirituality are linked.
The program consists of three courses, each course containing a number
of modules that push the awareness of duality further and further.
The overall program will lead the participant to discover our participation
in duality; the possibility of experiencing oneness or non-duality;
the moment of free choice.
Duality:
Living with Multiple Truths is the introductory course. This
two-week course offers the participant an opportunity to explore:
- our experience of duality: its birth in the family and its importance
in structuring human experience;
- the personalizing of dualism: the growing awareness of multiple
truths and the construction of our individual perceptions;
- our importance of dualism in self-defining moments: trauma, compulsion,
and our tendency to hang on to the one, great love of our lives.
Each
course in the program
- will push on our deepest connections – that place where
it is impossible to know where I end and you begin.
- will
explore our essential separateness – that place where loneliness
becomes a constant, aching friend.
We will examine how our modern understanding of faith, hope and love
assumes and sustains duality.
We will
suggest a new vision of faith hope and love, one that offers an eternity
greater than the duality which has become our life.
Not for
the spiritually timid or naive, this course is for those who are beginning
to suspect that the path they are now on may go on forever.
If
you are getting bored with the prospect of an eternity that is merely
endless, if you sense change in your life but have no idea how to
recognize what is truly new, Awakening to Duality may be the option
for you.
