Computers, VDTs, TVs -- Electromagnetic Radiation --

We should be concerned about the low frequency electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted from TVs, video games and computer monitors. EMR is generated by the coils on the CRT (Cathode-ray Tube). Television sets emit EMR in all directions that will penetrate walls and floors so do not place them near a wall that has a bed on the other side. Watch TV from 3 meters away and limit children's exposure time. Video games bring the face of the tube to very close proximity to the user. Given that young people seem to be more vulnerable to the negative effects of EMR their extended use of this equipment at close range should be of great concern. Do kids a big favour and limit their exposure. Video lottery terminals addictive qualities may be related to exposure to EMR.

Computer monitors also emanate EMR in all directions. They can present a even greater hazard than TV's and video games because the user must sit close to them for their whole lifetime of education, leisure and employment. There have been numerous clusters of miscarriages of computer operators. Most new monitors meet the Swedish standard called MPR 2. Biological effects have been found at lower exposure levels so this standard is probably not low enough. Because EMR is emitted in all directions including the back or sides of any monitor, other people should sit at least 2.5 meters away. Monitors can be shielded for EMR on the back and sides with special techniques and materials but there is no way that the front can be shielded for magnetic fields. The only safe thing to do is if you must use a computer is dump that old monitor and buy a low radiation one. Liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma display monitors emit little EMR: just don't use the laptop on your lap, keep it at least 25 cm away.
