SURVEYS

After a year of discussions and public meetings, The Broad Coalition decided to ask the person on the street what they thought of cooperation of Greens and NDP for the 2005 election.

We consulted with professionals in surveying and opinion polling during the design of our survey and the analysis of data.

First Survey

The Broad Coalition began surveying voters on the street in Victoria and area during July and August 2003. Our first survey asked four questions beginning with "Do you plan to vote in 2005?" The majority of respondents favoured cooperation.

Results of First Survey (pdf 6kb)

The results of that survey raised questions that needed to be explored in order to interpret results with greater confidence.

Second Survey

A second survey was designed to explore the reasons why people would or would not favour some form of cooperation of NDP and Green Party. We added a question on proportional representation as we thought that a person's attitude about proportionality might favour cooperation of parties.

We used the most frequent answers people gave in the first survey as prods in the second survey (pdf 7kb) so we could get more data from each respondent.

We surveyed in Victoria in November, 2003 and Victoria, Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast in 2004. Survey Results Summary (Word)

The Broad Coalition is a non-partisan group promoting grassroots dialogue and participatory democracy.
