This was my second car. A 1978 Peugeot GL V6. I bought it in February 1987. Why buy such an old car? It wasn't expensive, and it was a very nice car. In it's better days this was a luxury car. Four wheel independent suspension, air conditioned, power windows, nice seats, tons of room inside, V6 motor, and even though only 3 litres, it had lots of power. Once it got up to 2800 rpm it would take off.
The car did have it's quirks. The ignition key was located on the left hand side of the steering column as well as the windshield wiper and headlight control stock. Pull back on the stock and the park lights came on. Then push the stock down and the headlights will come on in low beam. Push the stock forwards and the high beams would come on. A reverse "C" pattern. There was a knob to adjust the height/angle the lights would shine at when the car was loaded but it didn't work any more by the time I bought the car. On the right hand side was the signal stock. If you pulled on that stock, the horn sounded. There was no horn button on the steering wheel.
The location of the control stocks made for some interesting driving experiences to begin with. Soon they became second nature. Driving a North American configured car after that was always an experience. I still put the windshield wipers on occasionally when I mean to turn on the signal lights.
The power window (or winder) switches for the front windows were located on the dash just at instrument panel height. The sun roof switch and emergency flasher switch were there as well. Below that in the centre console were the heater controls, below that were the rear window control switches and their lock out switch, power antenna switch. Below that the radio.
All in all, it was a great car. The car served us well over the years never leaving us stranded. We added about 100,000 km to it. To bad that it hadn't been taken better care of before I bought it. Oh well such is life. Had it not been ready to retire I wouldn't have bought my VW Passat.
These pictures were taken one afternoon on a deserted road several miles from my parent's farm.
One final little tid bit of information. We were playing with the ashtray (remember smoking is not good for you) to see what useful storage purpose it could serve, and found $20 stashed in it. Paid for lunch that day.
