Located at 1184 Mt Newton X Road, Butterfield Park includes a heritage house and gardens developed in the early 1900’s

Butterfield Gardens is getting a makeover!

***************************************************

Since November 2003 , a group of community volunteers have been working to restore the  gardens at Butterfield Park. The restoration is being done according to heritage principles laid out in a report prepared by landscape architect Elizabeth Whitelaw for the Municipality of Central Saanich. The first task has been to remove all the daphne and ivy that has invaded the park so that the bulbs and flowers nurtured by Mrs Butterfield can show themselves.

Great Progress has been made:

Volunteers including a group of students from Stelly’s High School and lots of neighbours have tackled the invasives and cleared a huge area below the house and also behind the house.

Fruit trees have been cleared out and the intitial pruning completed. There were even apples and pears this year.

A big vote of thanks to all the workers.

Successful Spring Tea:

On Sunday June 20, a tea was held at the Park, attended by some 75 people. The delicious refreshments were generously sponsored by Andree Williams.

Bulletin Board Installed:

Look for current information on the board located on the side of the shed as you enter from Thomson Place

Work in Progress:

  • Rebuilding of the rose arbor
  • Construction of a compost box
  • Light levels in the garden area will be increased
  • Plans are being made for the garden soil to be enhanced
