BEA ARTHO

Bea has been a sailmaker since 1983. She learned her trade in a sail loft, where she was also exposed to canvas making.

Before becoming interested in sailmaking, she acted as an accountant in Zurich, Switzerland. Later she enrolled in a full course of studies in biology, while continuing with her occupation.

During her student days Bea was to be taken seriously as a sailing competitor.

Her interests soon shifted towards marine biology, nautical/maritime and aerodynamic issues. She enrolled in numerous related college courses as well as undertaking directed Independent Study Projects.

In late 1985, she took over the sail loft, which she renamed BEA'S SAILS & CANVAS, specializing in traditional sailmaking. She soon became known for the high quality of her sails, the trademark of which were careful finish, as well as fine regular hand roping. The regularity of her stitching is still unsurpassed.

Since 1997, Bea makes her home on beautiful Vancouver Island, B.C. where she established a new shop, under the old name of BEA'S SAILS & CANVAS, at WESTPORT MARINA, in Sidney, B.C.

Bea is an avid sailor, painter and photographer, loves flower gardening, dogs, jazz music and is an excellent cook.

JACQUES FENIGSTEIN

After erring towards medicine and later law (sic!), Jacques in 1973 discovered the oceans!

During a stay in Corsica, France, he became interested in boat construction and sailmaking. He learned, and soon began with sail repairs. New sails followed soon; the first sail loft was established.

Back to school in 1977, Jacques elected the fields of marine biology, fisheries and oceanography. In the eighties he took up the study of boat design, construction and related engineering.

1985 Jacques became a working partner at a boat shop. 1987 he took over as owner-operator. The shop built several yachts of up to 42' under his management. (See pictures)

Jacques came to Sidney, B.C., in 1997 and has since worked with BEA'S SAILS & CANVAS.

He now focuses on DODGER design and construction, works in the field of marine consulting and provides international business translation services.

Jacques developed tartarooga, the highly popular line of HARD DODGERS.
