Black History Month Committee

The activities of this committee include planning and putting on events celebrating and highlighting British Columbia Black History during Black History month. Past events have included coffeehouses, art exhibits, speakers, dinner/dances, variety shows, and public service announcements. For Black History Month 1998 the committee is planning an art exhibit, storytelling and crafts for children, coffeehouses, and a black tie dinner.

Education Committee

The activities of this committee include educating, disseminating and supporting Black British Columbian historical achievements. The committee accomplishes these objectives by inviting guest speakers to monthly BCBHAS general meetings; providing school presentations regarding Black Pioneers; and promoting and circulating the Education Guide. Most importantly, this committee is responsible for conducting research on the history of Blacks in British Columbia.

A subcommittee of the Education Committee is Education Guide committee. Education Guide committee has produced a Resource Guide designed to assist educators in promoting cross cultural education and multiculturalism within and outside of the prescribed curriculum. The Guide also serves as a useful tool in combating racism in the K-12 school system. The Resource will be piloted in the 19998 school year in the Greater Victoria School District No. 61. Membership Committee

This committee's activities are directed to maintaining and building our membership. This goal is accomplished by contacting each member to inform them of upcoming BCBHAS activities and events; increasing our profile in the community by attending all local community and multicultural events; inviting interested parties to our general meetings and social events; and communicating to the board the needs concerns comments, etc of our membership.

Fundraising Committee

This committee's activities are simply the title of its name. The committee develops interesting and unique ways of raising money to enable the Society to fulfill its mandate. Past fundraising activities have included a craft show, SunFest, cafes and a variety of Black History Month activities. Youth Committee

This committee coordinates activities for youth while encouraging them to take an active interest in the achievements of Blacks in British Columbia and Canada as well as developing an interest in their community and the world.

Newsletter Committee

This committee produces the Society's quarterly newsletter AWARE. Our newsletter reports on upcoming and past community and cultural events and announcements relevant to our readership.
