In September 1996, the shuttle Atlantis (STS-79) is scheduled to return Shannon Lucid and our six InSb microgravity grown crystals from Mir. These crystals were grown in the Canadian Space Agency's QUELD furnace.
In December 1996, three additional GaSb crystal growth experiments will be delivered to the QUELD furnace in Mir by STS-81. The Canadian Space Agency's Microgravity Isolation Mount table (MIM) will be tested to determine the effects of g-jitter on crystal growth.
Amistar will be conducting protein crystallization experiments on Mir in 1997. We will attempt to obtain larger more perfect crystals of cytochrome-c, a protein of significance for metabolic mechanism understanding. The MIM apparatus effects will also be assessed.
