Tour of St Ewe village, September 1998

Walk with me through the village where my ancestors
lived since at least 1600 until they emigrated to Canada before 1850.
We start at the open area in front of the church
beside the stone cross, look to the right, then turn left
and follow the main road through the village.

Looking east from church entrance, the 16th century Crown Inn, the village Lockup, with the main road between them. Hydrangea bushes and geraniums bloomed along the roadside.
Looking west, the village cross on its pedestal (left foreground). Upper floor of building on right once housed the Dame's school. The cross is thought to predate the village - it aligns with the compass directions, not with the village.
Walking westward, passing cottages with roadside gardens - private gardens behind.

Looking through a gate -- Churchtown Farm is being renovated for an extended family. The central courtyard is surrounded by the old out-buildings that will become separate cottages. The Owl, displaced from his home in the barn, must be provided a new home in the roof -- the dormer window just showing above the central door.
The western edge of the village - my B&B is the last one.
