Shareware & Freeware
Precautions - Defining Shareware & Freeware
Shareware Compilation Sites - Searching for Shareware
Precautions
There are hundreds of hobbyist coders out there creating all kinds of software. Their experience ranges from the most rank amateur to folks with years of experience. It is probably better to use a referring site (such as those listed on this page) than download an unknown program from an unknown programmer.
You should also make it a routine practice to check new downloads with current anti-virus software. Weekly checks of the whole computer (or when you suspect trouble) is also strongly recommended.
Defining Shareware & Freeware
Shareware
Shareware is "try before you buy" software. After the specified trial period (usually 30 days) you are required to either pay for the software or to remove it from your computer.
Freeware
You can install and use freeware software without charge but the author retains ownership. Some request a postcard or e-mail to let the author know who is using their programs.

Searching for Shareware
If you don't find what you want try a search at Google (opens a new window) using the following for search criteria keywords: software vendors or categories for search criteria:
- If you know the name of the program or the programmer or the vendor, try that first.
- You might try the function of the software you are looking for (such as text editor, e-mail/email program).
- It might help to specify the platform you are intending to run it on (Windows 98, Windows XP, Mac, etc.).
Google offers special search engines for Linux, BSD, Apple Macintosh and for Microsoft which might help narrow the search.
