The Reading Room

Just for Moms

by Joyce LaVerne White  ©

A Sidney woman is helping to remove the fear of pregnancy and childbirth for first-time mothers with no emotional support. Excerpt from a 2,000-word nonfiction piece published in B.C. Woman, Nov. 1993.

Pat Wilson was sixteen years old, pregnant, and alone. She had no one to hold her hand or love her and tell her the feelings engulfing her were normal. The relationship she'd been sure would last forever had ended when she learned she was expecting a child, and her parents had taken the attitude of so many in the 1960s: "You've made your bed, now lie in it." She spent nine months wondering what was happening to her. When labour began, she had no idea what to expect.

More than anything, Pat wanted to raise her daughter. For several months, she tried but, without emotional or financial support, she found parenting impossible. Out of love, she finally gave the baby up for adoption.

Thirty-three years later, that daughter has started an organization to help other women like Pat.

"I had the idea late one evening in 1991," says Laurie Muloin, now the mother of four. She and Pat had reunited shortly before. "I had always known I was adopted and I can remember thinking, over and over, what it must have been like for my mother--especially after my children were born. But it was just all these ideas going around in my head. I had no real direction, but I knew I had to do something. I'd been fostering newborns, and learned that one was the child of a teenaged mom. She was without her own mother, and her father had washed his hands of the whole thing. Pictures of my birth mother came back." . . .
