Lifetime Promises
The story of how one couple rediscovered the true meaning of marriage. Excerpts from a 1,260-word photojournalism feature published in Our Family, Aug. 1992.
"Rituals are milestones--they mark a journey. They are not the journey," Barbara Desforges said when asked about the reaffirmation of wedding vows.
"They are the lighthouses of light and it is comforting to reflect upon the experience. Marriage is hard work but it's important to celebrate one's accomplishments and keep right on working. That's why we chose our twenty-fifth anniversary for our vows."
Bob was stationed in Colorado when he asked Barbara to marry him. "I didn't want to leave my teaching job so I told him I would marry him only during Christmas vacation. I guess that's why this 'second marriage' was so important to me. The other was hurried." . . .
. . . The aim is personal growth. It lets you stop asking questions like: When is it my turn? Honest exploration strengthens your commitment to each other. One of the biggest changes was the revising of expectations. We had to take the fantasy out of our marriage and look at where we really were. Now we try to take time to listen as well as talk. And we try to review our marriage--that takes courage . . .
