When I was younger, I wanted to be an archaeologist, to resurrect entire civilizations out of fragments of bone, shards of pottery and the leavings of long-ago dinners. But then I learned about life at the dig: sand in your food, scorpions in your sleeping bag . . . No, I wasn't cut out for that kind of fieldwork.
      Abandoning the Bronze Age for the Information Age, I discovered that the writing process is not unlike archaeology: the meticulous collection of evidence, the sifting of fact from speculation and, finally, the creative synthesis. Excavating for ideas satisfies both the analyst and the romantic in me.
