Questions?

Q:   How long does copyright last?
Copyright, or ownership of the work, lasts for the writer's entire lifetime plus 50 years. This applies to Canada and all countries that have signed the Universal Copyright Convention.

Q:   Can I upload any of your documents to my listserv or newsgroup?
No, that would be a copyright violation. You may, however, freely pass on the URL to our site , or to any documents therein. Of particular interest may be:

Q:   If I find an article useful, can I make copies for my students or hand out copies to my business colleagues?
No, not unless you pay a fee. Access Copyright, is the agent for reprographic rights for members of PWAC and other professional writers' organizations:

Q:   What if I want to include a writing sample from The Reading Room in an online database, on a CD ROM or in another web site?
Such use is strictly prohibited unless you make formal arrangements with the author of the writing sample. Each author has the authority to negotiate terms for publication of his or her work in other media. Please contact the author directly if you are interested in publishing or distributing a particular piece of writing; for your convenience, each writing sample has a direct link to an Author Profile with contact details.

Q:   If a freelance writer sells an article to a magazine, who then owns the article?
The author does. When a freelance writer sells an article, he/she is licensing a specific limited-time use (usually first Canadian or North American serial rights). As long as the writer holds copyright, the writer continues to own the work and only the writer may license other uses of it.
Use in commercial databases, publication in other languages, film rights, publication on the World Wide Web are all separate rights for which a writer may negotiate separate fees.
