This new documentary, made for the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, explores the particular challenges faced by First Nations communities in recovering from losses from HIV/AIDS. "This video was produced in the hope that our people will learn from these stories. It is also a hope that other Bands and First Nations Organizations will be encouraged to do similar productions. Our people are dying from this disease. We need to break the silence." - John Aitken, Executive Producer December 1st is World AIDS Day. Guests included Jacob Beaton and others involved in this production. Singing Our Stories (1998, 49 min, director Annie Frazier Henry)Singing Our Stories, by Annie Frazier Henry, is a tribute to the power of song in aboriginal cultures, and to the women keeping these important musical traditions alive. This is a journey through the landscape of music indigenous to North America celebrating exceptional women, their music, their heritage, their homelands, and the future of the precious musical knowledge they preserve, carry and celebrate. Singing has received international recognition; awards include both an Antoinette Kryski and Golden Sheaf at Yorkton. Screenings have included the Margaret Mead and the Sundance Film Festival in 1999, where she was also a juror for the Documentary Film competition. Singing is currently viewed on many Canadian networks and in the US on PBS. |
