Barb Cranmer is an award-winning director who is a member of the 'NAMGIS First Nation of Alert Bay, B.C. of the Kwakwaka'wakw Nation. "I have been involved in film and video for the last fifteen years. The inspiration for my work has come from our own peoplešs rich history and stories that are very important. They are stories that most often go unheard. I am a messenger of these stories. Our First Nations communities have entrusted me with these stories to bring to the wider public.""This is a way of education and bringing greater awareness about our people. "I feel fortunate to be able to live the history of our people through the films I make. I get my source of strength from my community, and most importantly from my family. They have given me a strong sense of identity, knowing who I am and where I come from."Her credits include writing & directing her first documentary, Laxwesa Wa: Strength of The River about the West Cost fishery for the Discovery Channel, which has won numerous awards. She wrote, produced and directed, Qatuwas: People Gathering Together about the rebirth of the canoe culture on the Pacific Northwest Coast. This film won the first Telefilm Canada/TV Northern Canada Award, Best Documentary at the American Indian Film Festival, and was invited to the 1997 Sundance Film Festival. The most recent film, Tšlina: The Rendering of Wealthabout the traditional eulachon fishery won Best Documentary at the American Indian Film Festival, 1999. It was also nominated for a Chalmers Award. |
