The REEL MADNESS FILM FESTIVAL
A consistent theme in the films selected for this year's festival is 'stories of families'. All of the films are by independent filmmakers, many who share with us their own experiences of living in a family where someone they love has a mental illness.
These filmmakers will also be at the festival to present their films and talk with audiences. By sharing these stories we can better challenge the stigma which surrounds mental illnesses and support those nearest to us.
We're particularly proud to be presenting a strong lineup of Canadian films - our own filmmakers telling intensely personal stories in ingenious, artistic ways. Here's your chance to meet them.
- Lulu Keating will bring her familyıs story THE MOODY BROOD on Opening Thursday night. She asks: "Is there any such thing as the 'functional family'?"
- On Friday its DAD, a son's attempt to find out why his father, who seemed to have it all, let it all slip away. Also on Friday, Clive Holden presents GORDON'S HEAD, about a family's struggle when an older brother becomes ill with schizophrenia.
- MY FATHER'S ANGEL on Saturday is dramatic story also told through a son's eyes. While his family fled the war in Sarajevo they find they're still caught by its memory, even across the world in Vancouver. We'll be joined by writer/director Davor Marjanovic who brought this story with him when he came from the former Yugoslavia where he witnessed war's tragedy first hand as a documentary filmmaker.
- Sunday brings two films about caring for parents with Alzheimer's disease, first the 22 min. short THE GOODBYE with Vancouver filmmaker Katherine Surridge and then the acclaimed documentary, COMPLAINTS OF A DUTIFUL DAUGHTER.
- On Monday it's ROLLERCOASTER, again a brilliant Canadian film that takes us to Vancouver's deserted PNE grounds with a group of five teenagers in pursuit of fantasy and escape. It's likely that Vancouver filmmaker Scott Smith will join us for a Q&E - a great ending to this year's festival.
Add to this an opening with an 11 piece band, Minds At Work, and the art of Michael Peech and Vancouver's Gallery Gachet. Come not just to watch but to participate!
