Each year the Reel Madness film festival poster features artwork created by a local artist who is affected by mental illness.
I believe that because I have a mood disorder, I experience a deep range and intensity of emotions. At first, I was unable to identify with what I was experiencing, and thought I was losing my mind. After finding medical help, I was able to work toward arresting and controlling my illness through medications and therapy.
Fortunately, I have been given a talent which allows me to express myself. Through painting, I surface all my emotions in a creative and productive forum. I know painting is not only an outlet for my creativity, but also plays an important role in my recovery. I attend two art therapy programs, both which nurture my creative side, provide a conducive environment for work, and expose me to new ideas. For me, art therapy plays as much a part in my recovery as medication and counselling.
"This piece, (untitled) is characteristic of my work. I use a full palette of colour, exaggerated shadows, pieces and shapes, which in combination, mimic reality. I paint this way as a result of my mental illness. At times, my disease leaves me in a kaleidoscope of fragmented moods and emotions. Art as therapy, helps me to reassemble myself and create mental wellness. To this end, my paintings are indeed art mimicking reality."
