Anything on VHS goes the Sony player we supplied, but any 8mm Handy Cam or DVD can be directly plugged into the system. The image is translated by our three colour gun Sony projector from a normal coaxial cable feed and flashed up to 8'x12' on the screen. Laser disc and DVD machines must be rented but give excellent sound and marginally better video signal. The big advantage is that often discs are formatted to show wide screen (letterbox) versions so you get to see the whole movie as it was shot - not with the sides lopped for TV format. Discs often include theatrical trailers and extra background materials which can add much to the show.
Do you need permission to show movies?
Yes, even though we're not charging, it's still necessary, for public performances, to honour the copyright holders for use of their material. The two location licenses (designed specially for non-charge public venues: bars, schools, etc.) that cover virtually all titles released theatrically are held by two brokers in Canada. Licenses from both of them cost about $1160 per year. If we show 60 movies per year, the cost per show is only $20 which we can cover by donations. We can still offer accessible entertainment which is one of our goals. Donations are always most appreciated!
