Visions

DESCRIPTION: The fifth of five pages on Visions (one of the Field Nodes comprising the subject tree of The Telson Spur), this page is the fourth of four comprising a list of links to on-line resources for the study of the extraterrestrial life debate, the idea of a "plurality of worlds" and the concomitant issue of uniqueness (including bioastronomy and SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence). This page contains links to resources in the study of extraterrestrial intelligence, including techniques and strategies for interstellar communication, and the problem of contact. The other pages cover: bioastronomy and the SETI debate in general; extrasolar planets and planetary systems, their occurrence and detection; and astrobiology or exobiology, the study of the nature of extraterrestrial life, its origin and evolution. The coordinate page, with a common header and List of Contents, contains links to resources in environmental and future studies. This page is the last in a series comprising a list of links to mainly academic resources organized on the theme of necessity vs. contingency in the study of time and evolution.

KEYWORDS: alien; astrobiology; bioastronomy; biocosmology; CETI; contact; exobiology; extraterrestrial intelligence; extraterrestrial life; Fermi Paradox; interstellar communication; plurality of worlds; SETI; supercivilization; uniqueness

It might well be the case that the universe has produced and will continue to produce countless millions of ... histories analogous to human history.... To attempt to draw ultimate conclusions about God and the universe from a few episodes of the history which has been enacted on this planet would seem to be a most hazardous if not impossible proceeding.

John Macquarrie

The point is that only a search can make empirical what is after all a very old speculation. Whether we are alone or not needs to rest on experimental search, not on a string of evolutionary inferences.

Philip Morrison

Ethical principles qua laws of nature would have to leave a sufficiently broad region undetermined for yet another level of integration to arise. This cannot be illustrated at this time because we cannot distinguish between the limits of our ignorance and the necessary outer boundaries of ethical principles. We do not have enough members in our set of mankinds for a fair sampling.

Other Travellers: Search and Contact

In things which sense cannot discover, analogy is the great rule of probability.
John Locke

We submit... that the foregoing line of argument demonstrates that the presence of interstellar signals is entirely consistent with all we know, and that if signals are present the means of detecting them is now at hand. ... The probability of success is difficult to estimate; but if we never search, the chance of success is zero.
Philip Morrison & Giuseppe Cocconi (Nature, 19 Sep 1959)

Jill Tarter has been plugging away at SETI for at least a decade, rebutting bad ideas, going around actually doing SETI on the world's telescopes instead of talking about it, basically calling everyone's bluff and keeping the subject from becoming too theoretical. The amount of energy she's put into this thing is incredible, and she deserves a major award for almost singlehandedly keeping SETI very much alive in bureaucratic circles of NASA and elsewhere.
Paul Horowitz (from an interview by David W. Swift, October 1988)

And it's fun!
Jill Cornell Tarter

For man had fallen out of the secure world of instinct into a place of wonder. That wonder is still expanding, changing as man's mind keeps pace with it. He stands and listens with a shell pressed to his ear. He is still a child before the infinite spaces but he is in no way frightened. It was thus that his journey began -- perhaps with a message drawn from an echoing shell.
Loren Eiseley
