Paths

The Way of the Soul

DESCRIPTION: The third of thirteen pages on Paths (one of the Field Nodes comprising the subject tree of The Telson Spur), this page is the first of five comprising a list of links to on-line resources for the study of extremism in political and religious belief. This page is concerned with political extremism and terrorism, the fifth page with religious extremism and fundamentalism. The second through fourth pages list resources on the attack of September 11 and its aftermath, the long war on global terrorism. The coordinate pages, with a common header and List of Contents, contain links to resources for the study of oncomemes in general, and of hate and violence in particular; links to resources for the study of pseudoscience; and links to resources for the study and practice of religion.

KEYWORDS: anger; anti-Semitism; anti-unionism; atrocity; authoritarianism; belief; brutality; cognitive dissonance; corporate capitalism; counterknowledge; crimes against humanity; cruelty; evil; extremism; fanaticism; fascism; genocide; hate; hatred; ideological pathology; intolerance; militants; militarism; nationalism; neocon; neoconservatism; national socialism; nazism; oncomeme; perversion; slavery; social disease; terror; terrorism; terrorist; violence; war crime

This is the point at which the theory of evolution finally bursts through the bounds of natural science and becomes entirely an affirmation of man's ultimate aims. For the emergent noosphere is wholly determined as that which we believe to be true and right; it is the external pole of our commitments, the service of which is our freedom. It defines a free society as a fellowship fostering truth and respecting the right. It comprises everything in which we may be totally mistaken.

Michael Polanyi

Response: The War on Terror

When we forget what is due to ourselves and to others, when the feeling for human quality and the power to exercise reserve cease to exist, chaos is at the door.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

There has emerged, in our century, a pattern of behavior which may be associated with the idea of the totalitarian mind: preference for social passivity, an underdeveloped sense of individual worth, the absence of responsibility, in general, a flight from the freedom and burden of selfhood.
J. T. Fraser

War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity

There are a lot of people who say that bombing can never win a war. Well, my answer to that is that it has never been tried yet, and we shall see.
Air Marshal Sir Arthur Harris (RAF Bomber Command, 1942-45)

It is my opinion that the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan.
The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender because of the effective sea blockade and the successful bombing with conventional weapons.
Admiral William D. Leahy (U.S. Navy)

In those days when one was told, "This is what you're going to do," you just saluted and said, "Yes, sir!"
Colonel Paul Tibbetts (Pilot, B-29 Enola Gay)

Soldiers are not the enemies of peace. They are there to do our bidding, and to pay the price of our ambitions and our mistakes.
Gwynne Dyer

The killings could have been prevented if there had been the international will to accept the costs of doing so...
General Romeo Dallaire (Commander General, UNAMIR)
