Logo 00 - Lettering only

The most commonly encountered mug of this style is the 3.5-ounce "baby" mug, with raised letters. This mug was first produced in 1921, and may have continued until 1960. Variations have surfaced with etched letters rather than raised. It is not known if these mugs are authentic or are fantasy pieces created in recent years using blank mugs.

A 10-ounce mug was also introduced in 1921, with raised letter. Kalen claims this mug was a stock #1504 with "A & W" in raised letters. The 3.5-ounce mug is also referred to as #1504, and there is an 8-ounce #1504 mug introduced in 1956. There are three problems here: 1) the #1504 mug has a "plain" rectangular handle, 2) 10-ounce mugs believed to be from this period have a half-heart shaped handle, and 3) the lettering is the full "A & W ROOT BEER". Kalen wrote his document in 1976, so may not have recalled events and mug styles from the 1920s correctly. Or, there may be mugs as he describes out there, unknown to this author.
