  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2006 silver $1 coin, honoring the 150th anniversary of the institution of the Victoria Cross. The coin is 0.9999 silver, depicting the Canadian version of the Victoria Cross. The Proof coin sells for $34.95, the brilliant uncirculated coin sells for $26.95.   • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2006 $100 14 karat gold coin, commemorating the Royal Military College versus West Point hockey series. The design was created by Tony Bianco. Mintage is limited to 9000. [872.36]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2006 $200 22 karat gold coin, commemorating the timber trade. The design was created by John Mardon. Mintage limit is 4500. [872.36]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2006 $300 14 karat gold coin, featuring Britannia as appeared on the 1900 Canadian 25c bank note. This is the second coin in a series of three. Mintage is limited to 1250. Price is $1295.95. [872.36]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the 2006 Chinese Zodiac Year of the Dog 18 karat gold hologram coin. The designer is Harvey Chan. Mintage is limited to 4888. Price is $448.88. [872.36]

  • In Paris, France, the World Mint Directors' Conference is held, over four days. As part of the MDC Coin Competition, Canada's 2004 25-cent poppy colored coin is voted as the most innovative of the year. [884.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint announces it will begin using a new mint mark on circulating Canadian coins this year. The new mark will be a circle around a stylized "M" and maple leaf. [885.11]

  • Ian Bennet is announced as the new Master of the Royal Canadian Mint, effective June 12. [885.1]

  • A cornerstone of a Canadian building from 1926 is opened, revealing uncirculated coins likely straight from the mint. Included are Specimen 1c (1926) and 5c (1925), and a 1921 50c graded ICCS AU-50. [885.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint announces the 2006 $300 gold coin, depicting the Imperial State Crown, with enamel colors for jewels and felt of crown, to commemorate the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. The 14 karat coin weighs 60 grams. Mintage limit is 1000 coins. Price is $1520.95. [889.1]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint announces the second $30 silver coin in the War Memorials series. The coin depicts a large bronze caribou, and commemorates the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial.   • The Royal Canadian Mint announces the fifth $20 silver coin in the National Parks series. The "Jasper" coin depicts a horse rider in front of Mount Edith Cavell.   • In Long Beach, California, Heritage Auction Galleries holds the Ancient and World Coins Signature Auction at the California Coin Expo, over four days. Of the top twelve prices in the auction, eleven are Canadian. Some highlights:

  • The Royal Canadian Mint introduces four 0.9995 palladium $50 coins, depicting Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (Big Bear and Little Bear) constellations from four different views. Mintage is 300 coins of each type. Each coin is 31.16 grams, 34 mm diameter. Price is US$849.95 each. [893.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils a 2006 five-ounce 0.9999 fine silver $50 coin. The coin's design "Four Seasons" was created by Tony Bianco. The coin weights 155.5 grams, with diameter of 65 mm. Mintage limit is 2000 coins. Price is $299.95. [894.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint announces the name selected for the polar bear on the $2 coin: Churchill. The name was selected by online poll. Churchill received the most votes, at 34%. [897.15]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the Medal of Bravery circulating 25c coin in Ottawa. Up to 20 million coins will be minted. The design was created by Cosme Saffioti.   • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils a $300 gold coin with embedded Swarovski crystals on the snowflake design used earlier. The design was created by Konrad Wachelko.
